1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At first, Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife were just having a dinner in their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they heard someone screaming: “The house is on fire!” He went to investigate. That’s when he saw two women and a girl crazily at a loss on their porch (走廊). It was his neighbour’s house.

“The baby’s inside there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively (本能地) ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, who always called him Uncle Surrell. She was the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell’s three youngest kids, 8, 10, and 12. The other two on the porch were Tiara’s aunt and cousin.

Entering the burning house was like running into “a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Surrell to walk blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible for him to breathe. He felt his throat and lungs burned, and every blink stung (蛰) his eyes. The conditions would have been very dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病) and was in hospital just half a year ago, they were life-risking.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house searching but in vain, he ran outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.

“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.

Surrell knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. So he uttered a little prayer: “Well, God, this is it. You got to help me, because I’m not coming out without that little girl.”

A five-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick, and that they had no money left. Only a very costly operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money.

When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation (绝望), “Only a miracle (奇迹) can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.

Holding the valuable piggy bank tightly, she came to the local drugstore. She took all the coins from her bank and placed them on the glass counter.

“And what do you want?” asked the pharmacist (药剂师). “It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered back. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”

“His name is Ming Ming and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?”

“We don’t sell miracles here, child. I’m sorry,” the pharmacist said, smiling sadly at the little girl.

“I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”

In the shop, a well-dressed customer asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” That well-dressed man was Dr Zhao, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery.

“I don’t know,” she replied with tears in her eyes. “He’s really sick and my daddy can’t pay for an operation, so I have brought my savings.”

“How much do you have?” asked the man. “One yuan, but I can try and get some more,” she answered bitterly.

“Well, what a coincidence (巧合),” smiled the man, “One yuan —— the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”

I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We’re driving along a road and saw a piece of card saying: “Bungee Jumping, 5km” and an arrow pointing to the left. I couldn’t even see a road going left and there was no sign of any bungee jumping, but you insisted.

“We don’t have to do the bungee jumping, we can just go there and see what’s happening. It’ll be interesting!” As usual, you got your way. I gave in and off we went along this dirt road. After driving for ages, suddenly some trees appeared like a small wood. “This must be the place,” you said. We pulled over. As soon as we’re out of car, we heard voices of people shouting and laughing. It sounded like they’re having a good time. In the middle of the wood there were some people. They’re polite and friendly, but I felt like we’re interrupting.

Once there had been a river, but now there was just a dry ditch. A metal bridge crossed the ditch. The bridge didn’t look too stable. I thought the kids had built it. The kids were in the middle of the bridge. They’re all leaning over and looking down into the ditch. They’re shouting and laughing. Another person was hanging from a long piece of elastic rope in the middle of the ditch. He was laughing madly. The other people slowly pulled him up to the bridge. As the guy came to the top he looked shocked but also very happy.

“I want to do that!” you said. And you knew what I wanted to say: What will happen if the rope breaks? I didn’t say it, but I was thinking it. I didn’t say anything, because I knew that you wouldn’t have answers for any of my questions. You’ve always been a lot more adventurous than me.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings and me only once. Instead, she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four.

In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner?” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald’s.”

No amount of pleading (恳求) or scolding, her mother tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气). Finally her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s.” Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate; I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.

That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone?”

She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was eight years old, my seven—year—old cousin, Juliana, got sick. My brother and I were in the family room watching television when my mom came in to tell us the bad news. I wasn’t really sure what a heart operation meant, but I could tell it wasn’t a good thing. Juliana’s family was on a tight budget (预算), so was mine. My parents’ faces were full of worry and tears, and that was enough to make me cry, too.

When we went to see Juliana in the hospital, she was lying in bed,and she had tubes (管子) and other things hooked to her. It was confusing and scary.

The treatments continued, but Juliana was weaker and weaker. Every time I visited her, it was hard for me to believe her change. She seemed to lose all her strength and her lovely face turned pale. She lost a lot of weight even though she had proper food. As a child, I really couldn’t understand what the doctors were doing to her—it seemed like they were making her feel worse not better.

Seeing my cousin in so much pain made me feel like my own heart was aching. Something needed to be done. I knew I wanted to help her get better faster, but at eight years old, I wasn’t sure how I could make a difference—I just knew I had to do something to help her.

One night after we visited Juliana, all the way home I couldn’t stop thinking about her. A hospital can be a very scary, cold place. I imagined how lonely Juliana must have felt lying there during the night.

When we got home, I sat down at our kitchen table. I always liked writing stories and drawing pictures, and I started working at it like I had done so many other nights. But this night was different—I was thinking about Juliana. I thought, “Juliana is going to receive rehabilitation training (康复训练) but money is tight. What if I can sell my drawings? Then I can raise money to help her get well faster.”
