He woke suddenly and completely. It was 4 a. m. at Christmas, the hour when his father had always called him to get up and help with milking the cow. Strange how the habit of his youth was with him still, even his father had been dead for 40 years. The magic of Christmas for him was a long childhood past, and he was wondering why he felt so awake when his mind went back to his teenage years.
He was 15 years old then and still on his father’s farm. A few days before Christmas, he heard what his father was saying to his mother.
“Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast, and he needs his sleep. I could manage alone.”
“Well, you can’t, Adam.” His mother replied. “Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time to take his turn.”
When he heard these words, something in him woke: his father loved him so much as had never been thought before. Now that he knew so, there would be no more lying in the mornings waiting to be called. He got up and pulled on his clothes.
On the night before Christmas, he lay thinking about the next day. They were poor, and most of the excitement was in the turkey raised themselves and the mince pies made by his mother. His sisters made presents, and he always saved and bought something for parents.
However, he wished, that Christmas he was fifteen, and that he had a better present for his father than before. He looked out of the window and saw Dad working in a stable. Then a thought struck him: why should he not give his father a special gift out there in the stable? He could get up earlier, quietly go into it and get all the milking done. Then when his father went in to start the milking, he’d see it all done.

2 . It’s pretty much the thrift store(旧货店) dream: to find a rare, long-lost treasure on a crowded shelf, on sale for a cheaper price.
That’s what happened at the Hotline Pink Thrift Shop, where Wendy Hawkins came across an otherwise ignored piece of art. The item turned out to be a 1950s woodcut print that was created and signed by Spanish painter Salvador Dalí. It is part of a series of 100 illustrations describing Dante’s The Divine Comedy, a 14th-century Italian poem. Dalí was best known for his melting-clock paintings and was easily recognized by his stiff upturned mustache.
Dalí was first appointed by the Italian government to make the series in honor of Dante’s birthday celebration, but anger over a Spanish painter taking on an Italian poet’s work led officials to drop it. However, the artist had become so taken by the project that he couldn’t let it go. In the end he created a series of 100 watercolor paintings — one for each chapter of Dante’s book — that were reproduced as woodcuts.
“And that is what Wendy found,” said Melanie Smith, who owns an art gallery just down the street from the thrift store. She was the first person Hawkins consulted to learn more about what she’d discovered.
In all, Smith worked on authenticating (甄别) the piece for over a week. “It is very difficult to authenticate Dalí’s works because there are so many nuances (微妙之处),” Smith explained He also authorized a ton of prints, which he sometimes signed.
Once Smith believed it was an actual Dalí’s original, she helped sell it. It went for $1,200 to a couple. She said part of what made it so valuable is that it has two signatures—one with a wood stamp and one in handwriting with a purple pencil.

One day while 8-year-old Amy was walking home from school with her mom, she saw a wonderful barbie doll on the shelf of a toy shop. The barbie was designed and packed perfectly. She insisted on her mom buying it, but the family couldn't make ends meet and 50 dollars for the doll was too much to afford. All the savings had to be used to live their life.
Each day after school when coming back with her mom, Amy cried for that toy and all her mom could say was next month. Time passed with Amy crying for the barbie. Then her mom got Amy a “better” one as an alternative, obviously at a lower cost. She tried to persuade Amy to forget about that barbie. But Amy was very stubborn. She wanted that barbie only.
Two months later. her mom found a part-time job which she had to do at home in her spare time at night after making her daughter sleep. Finally she could have extra money. Now she was a bit relaxed. It was Monday morning, when like every school off, she went to bring her daughter. But this time she didn't go alone, she brought the barbie toy for Amy. Amy was glad to see the barbie. She hugged her mom in extreme joy.
Each day Amy played with her doll, giving the barbie a bath, combing her hair, and dressing her in fancy skirts, Days passed. Now she got one year older. But the barbie did not mean so much to her. While playing, she snatched her hair and broke one of her hands. After all, she got bored with it.
Years went by. Amy grew up. Then she got married and in her thirties. One day, she came to visit her old mom. After lunch she went to her room where she grew up. She was looking back on old times with her mom.

8 . Scientists in Michigan have developed a forest fire alarm system, known as MC-TENG, This battery-free device hangs like a decoration from a tree and harvests all the energy it needs from the natural swinging of branches. It not only can detect when a blaze begins but also call for help. “Such a sensor could watch the woods for a decade without human attention,” said Changyong Cao, lead author and engineer at Michigan State University, who led the team behind the new device.
For Cao and his team. the disastrous forest fires in recent years across the American West, Brazil and Australia were driving forces behind this new technology. Cao believes that early and quick response to forest fires will make the task of putting them out easier, significantly reducing the damage and loss of property and life.
Traditional forest fire detection methods include satellite monitoring and watch towers, among others, which have high labor and financial costs in return for low efficiency. Current remote sensor technologies are becoming more common, but primarily rely on battery technology for power. “Although solar cells have been widely used for portable electronics or self-powered systems, it is challenging to equip these in a forest because of the shading or covering of thick leaves,” said Yaokun Pang, co-author at Cao's lab.
The simplest version of the TENG device consists of two cylindrical sleeves of unique material that fit within one another. The main sleeve is anchored from above while the bottom sleeve is free to slide up and down and move side to side. When a tree branch swings, the top and bottom cylinders move together and apart, producing a current. That current is small, yet easily enough to power temperature sensors to detect the temperature changes signaling a fire.
Cao says his team's new model has been tested over long time periods in the real world, and the device is ready. All he needs now, he says, “is just the money to build more of them.”

10 . Frequent goodbyes to her family come hand-in-hand with Wang Yaping's tough training. This time, however, her goodbye sparked joy in her 5-year-old daughter's eyes as she was “shooting for the stars” even if this was her longest separation from her mother. Wang took part in the Shenzhou-13 crewed task on Oct. 16. She became the first woman to enter China's space station.
Born in 1980 to a farmer family in Shandong Province, Wang loved jogging and was a high-scoring forward on the basketball court in school. In 1997, Wang was encouraged to register for the pilot recruitment program by her classmates because she was good at sports. In fact, she had been considering applying to teaching college.
Given her strong build and ability to stay calm under pressure, Wang passed all tests. After four years of systemic education and tough training, Wang eventually learned to fly four different types of aircraft before graduation.
Wang Yaping's dream of becoming an astronaut was inspired by Yang Liwei's 2003 space flight. She desired to become a female going into space. In May 2010, Wang was elected as one of China's female astronauts, The joy of being selected did not last long as the even tougher training quickly sank in.
She had to stand eight times the force of gravity in a spinning centrifuge. Blood can't flow to the brain properly, causing a temporary lack of oxygen and even blindness. Wang ever volunteered to be held to the same standards as her male trainees.
Her efforts were not in vain. Wang became a crew member of the Shenzhou-10 space task in 2013. She earned the title of China's first space teacher after giving a space lecture to students from n orbit above the Earth's surface.
A team of Chinese university students specializing in aerospace, art, architecture and music translated universe rays into music. They said the project was inspired by Wang's live space lecture, when they were teenagers.
