文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要是介绍了维基百科——开放性的百科全书,介绍了它的创立、运作等。

4 . Wikipedia was founded as a branch of Nupedia, a now-abandoned project to produce a free encyclopedia (百科全书). Nupedia required highly qualified contributors, but the writing of articles was slow. During 2000, Jimmy Wales, founder of Nupedia, and Larry Sanger, whom Wales had employed to work on the project, discussed ways of supplementing (补充) Nupedia with a more open project. Multiple sources are suggested for the idea that a wiki might allow members of the public to contribute material, and Nupedia’s first wiki went online on January 10.

There was considerable resistance on the part of Nupedia’s editors and reviewers to the idea of associating Nupedia with a Web site in the wiki format (格式), so the new project was given the name “Wikipedia” and launched on its own domain (域名), wikipedia.com, on January 15. The domain was eventually changed to the present wikipedia.org when the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation was launched as its new parent organization. In March 2007, the word wiki became a newly-recognized English word.

In May 2001, a wave of non-English Wikipedias was launched — in Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. These were soon joined by Arabic and Hungarian. In September, Polish was added. At the end of the year, Afrikaans, Norwegian, and Serbocroatian versions were announced.

Anyone with Web access can edit Wikipedia, and this openness encourages inclusion of a great amount of content. About 75,000 editors — from expert scholars to casual readers — regularly edit Wikipedia, and these experienced editors often help to create a consistent style throughout the encyclopedia.

Editors are able to watch pages and techies (科技人员) can write editing programs to keep track of or correct bad edits. Where there’re disagreements on how to present facts, editors work together to arrive at an article that fairly represents current expert opinion on the subject. Although the Wikimedia Foundation owns the site, it’s largely uninvolved in writing and daily operations.

1. Jimmy Wales wanted a more open project because ______.
A.he wanted to found WikipediaB.Nupedia had its own disadvantages
C.he earned less money from NupediaD.Nupedia had been abandoned
2. The idea of connecting Nupedia with a Web site in the wiki format ______.
A.gained a wide support
B.came into being on January 15, 2000
C.made Nupedia better and better known to the public
D.weren’t welcomed by all Nupedia’s editors
3. Who are responsible to create the main style for the Wikipedia?
A.Any readers of the Wikipedia.B.The techies.
C.The Wikimedia Foundation.D.The experienced editors.
4. Which of the following facts about Wikipedia most probably surprises readers?

5 . “Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼) in the closet (衣橱)?” Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully. “Well. It’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be a skeleton in his family’s closet. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”

“Why do you pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?... Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked, I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse.

After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica’s mother sank into a faint (晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.

“What happened? Where am I?” She asked “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad,” Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly.

“They’re both crazy,” she thought.

1. According to Jessica’s mother, “a skeleton in the closet” means ______.
A.a family honorB.a family secret
C.a family storyD.a family treasure
2. What can we learn about some Australians’ ancestors from Paragraph 2?
A.They were brought to Australia as prisoners.
B.They were the earliest people living in Australia.
C.They were involved in some crimes in Australia.
D.They were not regarded as criminals in their days.
3. Jessica’s mother fell down into a faint because she was ______.
A.knockedB.frightened
C.injuredD.surprised

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。作者就去美国旅行过程中的住宿问题向大家做了介绍。

6 . When you go on a trip to America, you will see the word Motel on signs and notice boards. It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (however, you don’t a need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided but there will certainly be a cafeteria (自助餐馆). Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than the others. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in big national parks.

In these great national parks, you may meet guests you don’t expect to see. An American friend told me a short story. In the middle of a moonless night, she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow. As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn’t a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paws, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!

There are also, of course, places called “rooming houses”, where they provide lodges (客房). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!

1. Motels provide all the following EXCEPT ______.
A.BathB.swimming poolsC.TVD.meals
2. The underlined word “crept” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A.moved slowlyB.rushed outC.threw awayD.ran fast
3. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us ______.
A.an interesting storyB.bears usually look for food at night
C.the experience of the author’s friendD.we may meet animals in national parks
4. From the last paragraph, we can learn that in New York during the tourist season ______.
A.tourists can find gold thereB.it is difficult to find a room there
C.tourists can have a sweet dream thereD.there is a warning for tourists to New York

There was a lively discussion was held in my class last Friday. It was main about protecting the fine Chinese culture. Some suggest raising people’s awareness of preserving our culture and make people fall in love with it. For example, we could conduct creative activity like discovery tours and culture shows to help people have better understand of our culture. Others thought some courses should be offered in schools, whose goal was to help students learn more about their customs, ways of life and so on. And to my view, which mattered was that everyone should feel proud of our own culture. Beside, we should attempt to pass our fine culture down from generation to generation.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了三菱的LED天窗是如何逐步帮助我们实现了健康的工作与生活平衡的。

10 . Achieving a healthy work-life balance — an idea that has spread to countries around the world — has become one of the primary social goals today. This has resulted in an immediate need for companies to allow for a variety of workstyles such as working from home, while also providing a friendly work environment that can bring out the best in each employee.

It all sounds very promising, but in reality, most offices today feature (以……为特色) the same boring designs. To make matters worse, air conditioning is often kept to a minimum to cut electricity costs, while windows are covered with blinds to prevent dizziness from longer exposure to natural light. Employees who work indoors are forced to spend most of their days in these unpleasantly warm environments. Since the choice is to build costly new offices that are brighter and more open, there is a real need for solutions that can create a sense of brightness and openness.

This is where Mitsubishi Electric’s revolutionary new technology comes into play. It is a lighting solution to produce the exact deep blue color of a clear sky. Using this technology, offices can work in a way that was not possible with previous LED lights.

The blue skies that are seen on a clear day are produced by what is known as Rayleigh scattering (散射). Because blue light waves are shorter than red light waves, they are scattered towards us more strongly — this is why the sky looks blue during the day.

Mitsubishi Electric’s LED skylight uses the same phenomenon to artificially create the sky’s deep blue quality. It is made up of a slim sky blue panel (嵌板) and a four-sided frame. Of the four frames, only three are lit up at any given time, while the fourth remains dark as if the light were entering at an angle — an important detail that creates the false idea of actual sunlight pouring in through a skylight. Thanks to this technology, one can remain in a closed room and still enjoy the great excitement of looking up at a deep blue sky.

1. What is a healthy work-life balance like according to the writer?
A.It encourages employees to work indoors.
B.It improves employees’ health conditions.
C.It brings out the best of every employer.
D.It includes different kinds of workstyles.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The costly choices of most old offices.
B.The promising future of office workers.
C.The work conditions in the offices today.
D.The virtual solutions to improve productivity.
3. How does Mitsubishi Electric’s LED skylight work?
A.By letting actual sunlight pour in.
B.By lighting three sides of the frames.
C.By changing the previous LED light.
D.By showing pictures the deep blue sky.
4. Which of the following can best describe the effect of Mitsubishi Electric’s LED skylight?
A.Colorful.B.Boring.C.Dizzy.D.Enjoyable.
