文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。介绍了两兄弟创建一套简短的课程,让孩子和成年人都能轻松地学习编程。
1 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Robotics is a complex field. But brothers Sanjay and Arvind Seshan found an early passion for it. In 2014, they started a mission to make     1     easier for others to learn robotics by creating a website,     2     they teach people to code.

The story started when they were looking for materials for learning how to program, and they     3     (realize) that there was not really anything good online. Then they came up     4     an idea of creating a brief set of lessons from which kids and adults can learn     5     (easy) to program.

The website started with basic lessons on robotics and coding. But now the lessons can support kids who     6     (involve) with robotics for years and who want to learn something new. The brothers thought that one of the reasons why kids liked it     7     (be) that they were being taught by other kids.

The brothers understand that robotics takes     8     (patient) and lots of time. They recall a project     9    (call) Pix3l Plott3r, a robot that would print people’s pictures. It took them two years to get a fully working model, and they made six or more versions. The Seshan brothers’ advice is never     10     (give) up if something does not work the first time and to try different ways of solving the problem.

2 . In January, 2021, the ice-making work on the ”Ice Ribbon“, a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.

In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by a small time gap, tiny imperfections in the ice can make all the differences. ”It’s not just a hunk of ice like you’d normally think of, like ice cubes sitting in your freezer,“ told Kenneth Golden, a U. S. mathematician who studies the structures of ice. ”It’s a much more fascinating and complex substance than people would normally think.“

The first step for building any ice rink is to purify the water to remove dissolved solids like salts and minerals. Such impurities don’t fit in the regular hexagonal(六边形的)structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water, the more consistent the ice surface.

In addition to the need for excellence in the raw materials of ice-making, technology is also very important, As one of the most advanced technologies for winter sports venues, a carbon dioxide cooling technology has been applied on a large scale for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. CO2 , is not new when it comes to ice-making. However, it has been gradually replaced by the man-made refrigerant, like Freon.

With increasing attention toward climate change, the old refrigerant has come into use again. As an element of the atmosphere, CO2, doesn’t damage the ozone layer. Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas, its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other synthetic refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in ice-making, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly.

”We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way.“ told Gao Bo from the Media Operations Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

1. What is the result of impurities in water for ice-making?
A.The water isn’t able to freeze completely.
B.The quality of the ice will be affected.
C.The ice surface will be more consistent.
D.It’s likely for athletes to fall on the ice.
2. Why has CO2 cooling technology been applied for the Winter Olympic Games?
A.It’s the most advanced technology for ice-making.
B.CO2 is more efficient than other refrigerants.
C.CO2 is more environmentally friendly than Freon.
D.CO2 has already existed in the atmosphere.
3. What is Gao Bo’s attitude to CO2 being applied to ice-making?
A.Unclear.B.Opposed.C.Doubtful.D.Favorable.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Beijing Winter Olympic Games Are Coming
B.Beneath Olympic Ice
C.The Use of Refrigerants in Olympic Games
D.The Structure of Ice

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要描述了一个方便的指南告诉读者5G是什么,它对你意味着什么。

3 . To help you understand what 5G is, and what it means to you, we’ve put together a handy guide here.

What is 5G?

1    At its most basic level, 5G will be used to make calls, send texts, and to simply get online. But it’s going to be significantly faster than previous generations, and could open the door up to a range of exciting new uses.

    2

5G will use new higher radio frequencies to send out data, which are less cluttered(挤了)and carry information much faster. While these higher bands(频段) are faster, they don’t carry information as far. That’s to say, smaller multiple input and output antennas (天线)will be used—promoting both signals and capacity(容量).    3

Why is it better than 4G?

5G is expected to be faster than 4G, with some firms claiming it could be as much as 100 times quicker. The fastest 4G networks can deliver 传输)peak(峰值)download speeds of around 300 Mbit/s.    4    In real life, this could allow you to download a full HD film in less than 10 seconds!    5     It means there will be very little—if any—delay when you carry out tasks on a device(设备). While this will help improve things like gaming experiences, it could also pave(为…铺平道路)the way for safer self-driving cars—in which even a short delay could be life-saving.

Finally, 5G will have a larger capacity, meaning networks will be able to deal with several apps at once. Generally, this should mean that devices have a faster, more stable connection.

A.How does 5G work?
B.How will 5G affect you?
C.5G is also expected to have a lower lag(延迟).
D.5G is short for “5th generation mobile network.”
E.In comparison, 5G could offer download speeds of over 1 Gb/s.
F.Therefore, the similarity between 5G and 4G technology is huge.
G.This means 5G will support up to 1,000 more devices per meter than 4G.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’ve spent my adult life as a college professor teaching people how to think more creatively and use more of their brainpower. Interestingly, this lifetime passion was awakened by a casual contest when I was a child.

At a family picnic for employees of the company where my father worked, they held contests for the children — who could blow the biggest bubble-gum (泡泡糖) bubble, who could hop the longest on one leg. I was 13, full of enthusiasm and the spirit of competition, so I threw myself into the contests. The grand finale, the handkerchief-throwing contest, I realize now, was not meant to demonstrate any real skill, but simply for laughs. But it stirred my love of thinking outside the box.

The judge gave each of the dozen children a cloth handkerchief and told us the winner would be the one who threw it the farthest. The first throwers, the little ones, took mighty wind-ups (挥臂动作), but when the cloth left their hands, it opened and fluttered (飘动) to the ground a few inches in front of them. The crowd roared with laughter, and being 13, I didn’t like adults laughing at us.

So it made me angry to see the kids throwing harder when the handkerchief always opened, caught the air and died. The secret was not to throw harder but to keep the cloth from opening. Suppose I hid a rock in the cloth without tying it. The rock would drive the cloth at least farther than the others, and when they separated, people might not notice a small rock landing in the grass. I had a good chance of getting away with it, but I didn’t want to win by cheating. What I really wanted to do was to show them that a kid could beat them at their own game. I had to make the handkerchief fly like a rock. Like a rock! That was it! But the question was how.

My mother’s gift

A dandelion (蒲公英) in my dictionary always reminds me of my lunchtimes with my mother.

When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly (费力地) practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles.

I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.

It was a lovely spring day and the rose leaves were turning green. We could see yellow dandelions popping through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with a little bit of gold.

I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the dandelions. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, suddenly pulling a flower up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”

“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”

Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened.

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. “The narrator’s part is as important as the part of a princess.”

Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over my lines and talking about what I would wear.

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, his smile was brighter than the sun in June; his heart was bigger than the mountain sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life was quite infectious.

When Kevin joined the boys’ school basketball team, basketball became the center of his life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d think he was preparing for the NBA. He liked to stand in a certain place near the free-throw line and shoot at the basket. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball. “Look at me, Coach!” he’d shout at Randy, jumping up and down with the excitement of shooting.

Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game didn’t help them win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night when it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.

It was a cold snowing afternoon when their last game came. As the last-place team, they played against the first-place team. The game went pretty much the same as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.

At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “This is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he’s never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. When they had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who was standing in his special place near the free-throw line.

It was the longest heat wave anyone could remember, and Sebastian couldn’t wait to cool off at the beach with his dad. Before heading out of town, they stopped at the library and dropped off a few books.

Sebastian noticed a crew working on the library roof. He asked Dad what they were doing. Dad explained that they were repairing the roof, a difficult job he had done himself for a few years.

It was then that an idea flashed into Sebastian’s head: I bet they could use some water. But the idea disappeared just as quickly as the scenery passing by his window, and his thoughts turned to swimming.

The waves were perfect for bodyboarding, and a sea breeze cooled the air. But all too soon they were headed home, back to the heat. Sebastian was half listening to the radio when the DJ gave the weather report, “The record-breaking heat will continue throughout the afternoon,” she said. “If you have to be outside, remember to hydrate (补水) and stay in the shade.”

When they drove by the library, the roofers were still working and the sun was beating down on them. Sebastian wondered whether they have enough water. Sebastian had just finished two weeks of soccer camp, and even with frequent water breaks, it had been miserably hot. It made him think again about taking some water to the roofers. So he shared the idea with his brother, Marcos. Marcos shrugged. “You don’t even know those guys. They’ve probably gone home already anyway.”

Maybe Marcos was right Sebastian walked to the end of his driveway, where he could get a view of the library. But the roofers were still there, and the sun was still broiling (酷热的). Sebastian didn’t see any coolers or jugs anywhere. Then he told Dad, “I really think they need some water.” A look of concern came over Dad’s face. He picked up his car keys, saying “I think you’re right. It’s only going to get hotter.”

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had all the usual child fears. I couldn’t go to sleep unless the light in my bedroom was on. I dreaded that someday when my mother was distracted, Crazy Betty (our local small-town oddball) would grab me in the grocery store. On the hottest summer nights, my feet had to be wrapped tightly in my bed sheets; if one of them hung bare over the side of the bed, who knew what might grab it in its cold, slimy claw.

But all other frights paled in comparison with the Great Fear, the Titanic of my childhood terrors. That fear — and I admit, I feel a tightening in stomach typing the words even today — was that something would happen to Monk-Monk, my beloved toy monkey. That was the deepest fear of my childhood and I learned from it the lesson of cherishing what’s important in my life.

Looking at Monk-Monk today, you wouldn’t see what I see. You’d see a torn, discolored sock monkey, very much past his prime, stuffing leaking from his stumpy tail, holes on his sock-body inexpertly stitched up with thread that doesn’t match. I see my dearest childhood friend, my companion of a thousand nights. When I was only two and very ill, an aunt made him for me and delivered him to the hospital. I bonded with him fiercely and rarely let him out of my sight. When no one else was around, Monk-Monk played endless games with me, soaked up my tears, and listened to my secrets.

And then Uncle Ken came to visit. He lived in Ohio and occasionally he would come and stay with us for a couple of days. I didn’t know Uncle Ken well, and I didn’t like him very much. I had the feeling that he didn’t really like me, either. He clearly thought it was pretty silly that a big first-grader was dragging a sock monkey around, and he teased me by saying he thought he’d take Monk-Monk home to Ohio with him. His words almost scared me to death. I clutched Monk-Monk more tightly.
