1 . “Have you checked the oil in the car, Ted?” my father used to say to me. Sometimes our phone calls would begin and end with an only inquiry(询问) about the oil, without asking anything else. Fathers have lots of love to give, but it’s often provided through useful advice. In my experience, it’s mostly about the car.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? Why can’t the sentences “I care about you” and “You made my life better from the moment you were born” be heard? Because fathers tend to express their true feelings indirectly. You just have to understand the language—Fatherlish(父亲式语言).
When I was 17 years old, I went on my first road trip in that old car. My father stood on the corner on a cold early morning to say goodbye. “Roads are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try driving faster than a horse. And remember to take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time I thought his speech was pretty funny and old.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that if I had owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I would have understood that the speech that I always laughed at was simply Dad’s way to express love and care.

When the night fell, James, a middle school student in London, dragged his tired body home. In order to save money to buy himself a new bike, he had been working at a restaurant for over a month during the summer vacation. He had already earned some money. With one more week, he would have his dream bike.
Entering the room, James found his younger brother Adam sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face. James stared at Adam confusedly.
“Sorry. I did something wrong.” Adam said, on the verge of tears.
“What’s the matter with you?” James asked.
“This afternoon I went to play football on the road outside the house and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. Black’s car. I was so scared and I hurried home in panic without telling him,” Adam said, full of guilt.
“Is the car seriously damaged?” James couldn’t wait to continue asking.
“The ball hit the car back and the tail light got broken,” Adam said in a low voice.
“It’s truly your fault. It’s really dangerous to play football on the road. What’s worse, you shouldn’t have come back without telling Mr. Black about it. You are such a naughty boy,” James raised his voice. Hearing this, Adam lowered his head and bit his lips hard. James added, “Anyway, it’s never too late to mend. I’ll take you to his house tomorrow to apologize. Now it’s time to sleep.”

8 . Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote “the only way to have a friend is to be one”, and I totally believe that this is true.
Almost everyone, especially elders, thinks that it’s dangerous to make friends on the Internet. I also thought so at first. However, deep in my heart, I still wanted to give it a try. So last term, I made a new friend who lives thousands of kilometers away.
She and I weren’t meant to become great friends; we just intended to have some simple conversations at first. However, as time passed by, we began to talk heart to heart and we slowly became closer. Our friendship grew stronger through lots of chatting, and I found out that we have a lot in common. It seemed like we were meant to be. For example, we’re both girls with a strong will. During the winter vacation, we encouraged each other to hunt our dreams. It was our mutual (相互的) trust that helped establish our great friendship. I’m sure that it will be one of the best memories of senior high school.
Now, we memorize the vocabulary of the CET-4 together through WeChat and encourage each other not to give up. We even send each other gifts to express our best wishes when festivals come.
How do you define the word “friend”? Views vary from person to person. But in my opinion, true friendship doesn’t mean getting together every day. It means that you know one another’s dreams, and will help each other to make them come true.
Kindness is found everywhere. Our heart doesn’t show a lack of a sense of kindness, but a lack of trust, especially for strangers. Smile at the world and it will smile back.

Venice International Film Festival, Venice, Italy
Held yearly from 1932, it’s the world’s oldest film festival. The awards are lion trophies (奖杯) including the Golden Lion and Silver Lion. Chinese director Zhang Yimou has won the Golden Lion twice.
Festival de Cannes, Cannes, France
It’s held yearly from 1946. Held in May in the beautiful French seaside town of Cannes, it celebrates and awards artistic achievement in film. The highest prize is the Golden Palm trophy (金棕榈奖). Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige won the prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.
Oscar Awards, Hollywood, USA
The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood to honor the outstanding film achievements of the 1927/1928 film season.
Winners had been announced three months earlier. However, that was changed in the second ceremony of the Academy Awards in 1930. Since then and during the first decade, the results were given to newspapers for publication at 11 p.m. on the night of the awards. This method was used until the Los Angeles Times announced the winners before the ceremony began. As a result, the Academy has used a sealed envelope to tell the name of the winners since 1941.
The Golden Globe Awards, Los Angeles, USA
It was first held in January, 1944 at the 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles, where the winners in five categories received scrolls. The actual Golden Globe award started in 1946, when the statuette of a “golden globe” was introduced. The list of award categories has grown and changed over the times.

I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious (奢华的), but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer (肥料), weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty.
