文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了父亲节的历史,以及人们设立这个节日的初衷和该节日的发展过程。

1 . Every year on the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day is celebrated by families all around the world. We celebrate and honor fathers and their influence in our lives. Apart from your biological father, you can also celebrate grandfathers, stepfathers, and others you consider father figures.     1

The history of Father’s Day goes back to 1908, when a church in West Virginia honored 362 men killed the previous year in a coal mining explosion. The following year, a woman named Dodd started her quest to establish Father’s Day as a national holiday.     2     So she thought fathers should be honored in the same way as mothers.

3     It was finally declared a national holiday in 1972. It took more than 60 years from the birth of the idea to Father’s Day actually being recognized as a holiday.     4     In the 1920s and 1930s, there was a national movement to get rid of both Mother’s and Father’s Day and replace them with one “Parent’s Day”. Meanwhile, many fathers didn’t want such a holiday. After all, as the only breadwinners at the time, they didn’t particularly want their hard-earned cash spent on flowers and chocolates.

5     Struggling businessmen pushed the gift-giving holiday during the Depression, and during the War, Father’s Day became a way to honor the many fathers serving overseas. By the time President Nixon signed the Father’s Day as a holiday, it was already a national institution.

A.Dodd was one of six children raised by their single father.
B.Therefore, the history of Father’s Day isn’t straightly accepted.
C.A lot happened to threaten the parent-celebrating holidays then.
D.We have the answers to your wonder about this dad-centered day.
E.Give them a nice dad gift to show how much you appreciate them!
F.Dodd’s home state of Washington celebrated Father’s Day in 1910.
G.The Great Depression and World War II helped boost the idea of Father’s Day.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章揭示的是主题公园并不是近代世界的产物,而是拥有着悠久的历史。

5 . Every year, millions of people around the world head to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and other theme parks to experience the rides. It’s easy to think that these theme parks are a product of recent times, but they actually have a long history!

For centuries, traveling fairs went from city to city to entertain people. In Europe, public “pleasure gardens” were created for people to enjoy various kinds of performances. In 1791, the first World’s Fair in Prague combined these two traditions in Europe. In 1851, the first official World Expo was held in London’s Hyde Park. These fun and educational exhibitions attracted crowds from all over the world to come and admire new inventions and artistic displays. The Ferris wheel was one of these inventions; it first appeared at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the United States economy grew rapidly thanks to the Industrial Revolution. Americans were earning more and more money and had more free time to spend it. This led to permanent amusement parks, which could provide entertainment throughout the whole year. By the 1920s, amusement parks had entered their “Golden Age”. They were open all year round, and anyone with money to spend could buy a ticket to enter, enjoy the rides, and watch the performances. Hundreds of them appeared around the US and featured rides like roller coasters.

While many amusement parks were focused on providing visitors with a fun atmosphere and exciting rides, other parks built their attractions around themes to make visitors feel like they had stepped into a different world. The most famous theme park of all time is Disneyland, which was first built in 1955 and continues to bring fun and joy to children and adults alike across the world.

9 . BEIJING—Wang Yaping, a taikonaut onboard China’s space station core module (舱), offered people on Earth a zero- gravity musical performance on Tuesday evening to celebrate the Lantern Festival. The space show was shared via a video released at an annual TV gala for the festival celebration. In the video, Wang was seen floating in the space module while playing a guzheng, or Chinese zither. She played a segment of the popular Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower”.

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. People usually hang colorful lanterns, play riddle games and express their wishes and hopes for the future.

The crew members, who traveled to the space station core module on the Shenzhou-13 mission, kept some festive traditions alive as they continued to rotate around the Earth. Commander Zhai Zhigang wrote riddles on red paper scrolls with a brush pen. He displayed the calligraphy together with taikonaut Ye Guangfu and extended festival greetings to the audience. They also sent blessings to athletes at the ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics: “We hope that you all achieve success, gain friendship and harvest your best Olympic experience.”

Wearing new clothes, the trio (三人小组) enjoyed the traditions of eating dumplings and posting spring couplets on walls.
