1 . If it had not been for Fan Jinshi and her team, the world cultural heritage of Dunhuang Mogao Caves in a remote Chinese desert might have long been destroyed by sand, weather or humans.

Born in Beijing and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall paintings at Dunhuang, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. The 1,653-year-old Dunhuang Mogao Caves are a huge collection of Buddhist art—more than 2,000 buddha figures and 45,000 square metres of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduating from Peking University in 1963. While in Dunhuang, a remote village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors.

In the late 1990s, with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with Dunhuang Mogao Caves, but found Fan firmly in_their_way.   “The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,” she said.

Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings. “Despite our efforts to minimise damage, we can’t completely stop them from being eroded. But the digital database will last.”

Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up seldom with her accompany. “I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I’m full of guilt,” she said. Fan, 81, retired four years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser.

3 . International tourism is becoming interestingly popular, and large numbers of people from all over the world come to visit famous places such as the Great Wall of China and the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.     1     They've thrown rubbish everywhere, brought more traffic and even done serious damage to ancient relics.

As for the damage, there are many different causes. For example, the paintings in the Sistine Chapel are being damaged by people breathing onto them when they visit.     2     That may raise the humidity (湿气) of the air and damage the paintings. Damage in other places such as the Great Wall is because of tourists climbing on delicate (脆弱的) areas. Besides, roads have also been built to help visitors climb the Wall easily. These activities can cause a lot of damage to the area.

3     Firstly, we have to cut down tourist numbers, because fewer visitors will result in less damage. Secondly, we should make strict rules about which areas people can visit and what they can do when they get there.     4     People will not be allowed to walk off the paths. Visitors to indoor places can be asked to wear masks to protect the paintings.

In short, it is necessary to control tourism at famous places.     5     And people who live hundreds of years later will have no chance to see these great places.

Learning that you want to know how we spent the holiday in this special period, so I am writing to share the experience with you.

It is a coincidence that our National Day and the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival fell in the same day this year. Thanks to the unselfish devotion of all the medical staff which managed to bring the virus under control in our country, we could enjoy a long holiday than ever. Some people visited places of interests by means of private cars or public transportation, with masks on in crowded places, while some choose to stay at home, watching films or reading books. As for myself, I had a reunion with my family and enjoyed delicious mooncakes. Beside, we also watched some wonderful TV programs to celebrate the birthday of our motherland, all amazing at the great changes in our country.

Faced with the epidemic, we still had such good time. Best wishes!

6 . Songkran

Duration: from April 12 to 15, 2020 in Phuket (The dates vary depending on the regions).

Location: Songkran is the Thai New Year. The entire country gets a lot of days off, and most Thai people will be going back home to celebrate Songkran with their families. Just expect a lot of traffic jams on the road as everyone is out on pick-up trucks, throwing water at each other.

Details: Staring in the early morning on April 13th, the water ceremony will take many forms. Initially, you are only supposed to sprinkle (洒) your family with a tiny cup of water at home. It’s good luck. Then you sprinkle a statue of Buddha very respectfully and do a little pray.

Later in the morning, the game starts to change. Because this is the hottest time of the year, sprinkling each other with water is a lot of fun. Add a little beer to that and Songkran turns into a country-wide water war.

It starts rather gently in Phuket Town around 10 am, turning to water dogfights (混战) in the afternoon in Patong, Kata and Karon, and ends full-scale wet war zone in Bangla Road until late at night.

Survival Tips:

7 . The rebuilt Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) could feature a futuristic glass design, solar power, and an urban farm that supports vulnerable and homeless Parisians, if one architecture firm’s vision is realized. In April, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced an international competition for architects to redesign the cathedral’s 19th century spire (尖顶), which fell down after a fire destroyed the 850-year-old Gothic landmark. Paris firm Vincent Callebaut Architectures (VCA) responded to the call with an eco-friendly design that supports the local population and produces more energy than it uses.

The Vincent Callebaut (VC) project is titled “Palingenesis”, a Greek concept of rebirth or recreation. The film proposes a new roof made of galss, oak and carbon fiber, which connects “in one single curved stroke of pencil” to the sloping spire. The rooster which topped the original spire, regained front the remains after the fire, will resume its watch from the new glass design, while the cathedral’s choir will be “bathed in natural light”.

Beneath the spire, the roof will host a fruit and vegetable farm run by charities and volunteers, in order to produce free food for vulnerable local people. “Up to 21 tons of fruits and vegetables could be harvested and directly redistributed for free each year,” the firm said in a press release. “To that end, a farmers’ market would be held every week on the forecourt of Notre Dame.” The roof and spire will also produce electricity, heat and ventilation (air circulation) for the cathedral: an “organic active layer” within the glass will provide solar power, while the roof’s diamond-shaped “scales” will open to offer natural ventilation—a design inspired by termite mounds (白蚁丘). The spire will at as a space in which hot air accumulates in winter.

“How can we write the contemporary history of our country, but also that of science, art and spirituality together?” the firm said in a press release. “We seek to present a supreme project, a symbol of a lively and ecological future.” If the Vincent Callebaut design is selected, the firm said, the reborn Notre Dame will define “the new face of the Church in the 21st century”, presenting “a fairer symbiotic relationship between humans and nature.”
