5 . Every summer, many music festivals take place across the UK. From Leeds Festival in the north to Bestival on the Isle of Wight (the small island just off the south coast of Britain),festivals are everywhere. There are festivals for children, for literature enthusiasts and for young adults. Despite the huge amount of choice, one festival remains “the one” to go to: Glastonbury.
Glastonbury is a hugely popular festival, located in the countryside near Bristol. Formally known as Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, it is a five-day event featuring numerous singers and performers. The festival takes place over the last weekend in June. Every five years there is a “fallow year” — this means the festival does not take place, allowing the land to recover.
Tickets, which cost £225 each, are released in the autumn prior to the festival. Many people want to obtain tickets and they usually sell out very quickly. Tickets for the 2019 festival sold out in just 26 minutes! For those who missed out, there will be a resale in April. This year, I will be stewarding at Glastonbury for Oxfam. It’s a great way to see the festival, support a good cause and see how a festival is run.
The organisers don’t release the full line-up until after the tickets have been sold. This means people buy tickets without knowing which performers will be there. The festival has a good reputation so most people don’t mind the suspense (悬念). So far, only two headliners have been announced: Foo Fighters and Kanye West. When Glastonbury announced that Kanye West would be one of the headliners lots of people were frustrated. One person even set up a petition (请愿书) asking the organisers of the festival to cancel Kanye’s performance!

7 . Singapore’s tradition of eating out in places called hawker centers is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting at people walking by on the street. Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture. Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods are very popular. Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On December 16th, 2020, UNESCO added the city’s “hawker culture” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years before this. Now that it has been recognized, Singapore must provide a report every six years to UNESCO. The report must show efforts it has made to save and support its hawker culture.
“These centers serve as ‘community dining rooms’, where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner,” UNESCO said.
In the 1970s, Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centers. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now, the centers offer many different low-cost meals to local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.
But, now the average age of a hawker in Singapore is 60 years old. Younger Singaporeans now want to work in offices. They are less interested in working in small restaurants. The COVID-19 health crisis also hurts sales, preventing foreign visitors and locals from eating out.

10 . The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气). The year starts from Beginning of Spring and ends with Greater Cold, moving in cycles. The solar term culture is still useful today to guide people’s lives through special foods, cultural ceremonies and even healthy living tips.
Grain Buds (小满) is the 8th solar term of the year. It means that the seeds (种子) from the grain are becoming full. During Grain Buds, the summer harvest is about to begin. A saying about rain during this time mentions, “Heavy rainfall makes the river full.” Because of the great increase in rainfall, rivers are full of water. This is a good time to enjoy fish. It is also a harvest season for fishermen.
Frost’s Descent (霜降), the 18th solar term of the year, is the last solar term of autumn. The weather becomes much colder than before and frost begins. The apple is one kind of recommended fruit during Frost’s Descent. There are many sayings about apples’ benefits (益处) in China, such as “ Eat an apple after meals. Even old men can be as strong as young men.”
Minor Cold (小寒) is the 23rd one. For most areas of China, it marks the start of the coldest days of the year and people always start preparing for Chinese New Year. According to traditional Chinese medicine thoughts, people need to eat food that has more yang energy to prevent cold from harming their bodies. Another important traditional food for Minor Cold is Laba porridge (腊八粥).
