文章大意:这是一篇说明文,本文介绍了如何学习用口哨吹出旋律。

2 . Whistling (吹口哨) can be a fun passtime.     1     But others consider it a serious business, even entering whistling competitions. If you don’t know how to whistle, getting the skill for it may seem difficult. With just a little patience, however, you can easily learn to whistle a note or two.

Start by finding a mirror. First, place your lips (嘴唇) to form a small “O”.     2     And then blow air out through the circle you created with your mouth.

3     You’ll probably have to spend some time adjusting (调整) your lips and tongue until you are able to produce a whistled note. You may need to put your lips closer together and change the position of your tongue. While you learn, avoid blowing too hard.     4

Once you’ve produced a beautiful note, move on, adjusting your lips, tongue, and the force with which you blow to produce different sounds.

When you first learn to whistle, you may hear sounds like those heard when air escapes a tire (轮胎). When you hear such sounds, don’t feel sad.     5     Keep trying and soon you will develop the right mouth positioning for producing strong, beautiful notes.

A.Then stick your tongue out.
B.Small amounts of air often work best.
C.This means you are heading in the right direction.
D.Some people whistle a song to help pass the time.
E.You may need someone to teach you how to whistle.
F.Next, position your tongue behind your lower teeth.
G.Don’t expect to learn to whistle perfectly on the first try.

3 . Addiction and recovery are the two sides of the same coin. In many cases, addiction starts off at a relatively low level — misuse.     1     From this, a stage of addiction known as dependency may come about. However, addiction and recovery go together at each of these stages. In other words, it is never too late on the road down an addictive route to seek help.     2     Addicted people can be anything from a substance (物质) user to someone who has become fully dependent on an activity to be able to function normally. Consequently, addiction and recovery programmes tend to be tailored to individual needs and circumstances, often based on theoretical models of behaviour. Some addicted people find that a recovery programme they have tried is not for them. This does not mean they cannot recover, however.     3

One of the most dramatic recovery pathways available to substance users is called “cold turkey” (突然戒毒方法).     4     Although this sometimes works for smokers and alcoholics, it is not suited to everyone. It is worth remembering that recovery pathways are not just for people who have become addicted to substances like drugs and alcohol. Other common behavioural problems can also cause great disruption (扰乱).

Nearly all forms of addiction have a negative impact on the loved ones of addicted people.     5     It is particularly hard on families when only very slow progress is made.

A.Addiction is not a single state of being.
B.If left unchecked, it may then progress to abuse.
C.What recovery pathways are there for behavioural issues?
D.There are many others they might try if they do not succeed the first time.
E.This will take a lifelong commitment, but the results often speak for themselves.
F.This means that they completely stop their usage and avoid such behaviour in the future.
G.Supporting someone who is overcoming an addiction often requires a long-term commitment.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了在网上保持安全的办法。

4 . So much of our daily life relates to the internet, from work to education and even talking with friends. The more online accounts and devices you have, the more internet dangers you will face. That’s why it’s more important to understand internet safety rules which protect you and your family from threats that may harm your data and devices.     1

Make sure you’re using a safe internet connection

Although using public Wi-Fi is not recommended, it’s sometimes unavoidable when you are out. However, when you go online in a public place and use a public Wi-Fi connection, you have no direct control over its safety, which could leave you vulnerable (易受伤的) to cyberattacks.     2    .

Choose strong passwords

Passwords are one of the biggest weak spots when it comes to online safety. People often choose passwords that are easy to remember.     3    . In addition to this, using the same password for various sites puts your data at further risk. If hackers (黑客) get your identification from one site, they can probably access other websites which use the same login details.

    4

Developers are often working to make products safe, monitoring the latest threats and rolling out security patches (安全补丁) in case of weaknesses in their software. By using the updated operating systems and apps, you will benefit from the latest security patches. This is especially important for apps that include payment, health or other personal information about a user.

Be careful of uncertain links and where you click

5    . That’s why it’s important to browse carefully and avoid certain types of online content—such as links from untrusted sources. If you receive an email that you’re not sure about, avoid clicking on any links in it. In fact, it’s best to avoid opening untrusted emails at all.

A.Be careful of what and where you post
B.Keep software and operating systems updated
C.Read on to find out about the ways to stay safe online
D.A careless click can give out your personal data online
E.But some of those sites may have poor data protection policies
F.Therefore, it’s easy for hackers to break into your system
G.So, if necessary, avoid carrying out personal businesses that use private data

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了无论哪种类型,植物性食物都非常适合减肥。

5 . A recent analysis from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine highlights the benefits of replacing animal products with plant-based foods. This analysis, which amplifies a previous study by the same committee, further emphasizes the significant impact of plant-based diets on weight loss, cholesterol (胆固醇) and fat intake in overweight adults.

The most significant finding is that both healthy and unhealthy plant-based foods contribute to weight loss when they replace animal products in the diet. This conclusion is significant because it underlines the potential of a plant-based diet, regardless of the specific type of plant-based foods consumed, in managing weight and improving overall health.

This analysis is a secondary examination of a prior study that involved 244 overweight adults. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group followed a low-fat vegan (素食的) diet, and the second made no changes to their diet. Obviously, the study set no restrictions on calorie intake, and the researchers did not give participants specific instructions on diet quality.

The study authors used two different indexes (指标) to assess: the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). The hPDI emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, while the uPDI includes more refined grains and fruit juices. Higher scores on the indexes correlate with greater consumption of plant-based foods and reduced consumption of animal products.

The results revealed that after 16 weeks, participants on the vegan diet showed increased scores in both indexes. This increase significantly correlated with participants losing an average of about 13 pounds, mainly from reduced fat mass. The second group showed no change in their index scores.

Overall, the analysis provides strong evidence that eating plant-based foods is effective for weight management and health improvement.
