I still remember the winter of 1933 for a gift which made three girls happy.
Life was hard then, with lots of folks finding themselves penniless. When my shoes got holes, my dad just cut a piece of cardboard to slip inside them.
Maxine, my best friend, and I were in the choir. Then the principal, Mr. Robert announced a gift exchange among all the students. We each pulled a slip of paper with a name on it from a box. “Now don’t tell anyone whose name you got,” Mr. Robert reminded us. “This will be such a surprise!”
Of course, telling us to keep the names we’d picked secret was like asking a dog to stop barking. We figured out every single name. Maxine picked Peter and Barbara’s name was on my slip of paper. When we figured out who had my name, I almost fainted. It was Betsy! Betsy was poorer than the rest of us. My eager little heart sank. I knew I wouldn’t get anything from her.
Maxine and I were walking home that afternoon after choir practice. “What am I goanna do, Maxine, when my name is called? Stand up there looking stupid while everyone is watching me?” Maxine tried her best to make me feel better.
When we reached Maxine’s house, her mother called to us to see what Maxine’s aunt had sent her. A pair of red gloves was out on the table. “Oh,” Maxine cried with delight. “Look at the white snow angels on each of them!” She pulled off her worn brown gloves and slipped her hands into the new ones. “I have never seen anything so beautiful in my whole life,” I sighed. Well, I was happy for Maxine, but the sight of the gloves made me feel even sorrier for myself.
Finally the day for the gift exchange arrived. One name was called and then another. Kids jumped up, laughing happily and calling out to friends as they received their gifts. “Betsy,” Mr Robert called. I saw Betsy stand up hesitantly. Then Maxine stood up!
I caught Maxine’s arm. “You have Peter,” I reminded her. “I traded him,” she whispered as she walked over and handed her gift to Betsy. Betsy carefully unfolded her gift. My eyes popped out, and I think I even said, “Oh no!” out loud.

2 . Four Classic Games for Kids
Below are great games children can enjoy.
Egg and Spoon RaceLine players up, each with a boiled egg balanced on a spoon. Each person with a spoon and an egg must carry the egg on the spoon to the finishing line. If their egg drops, they must stop and put it back on their spoon before continuing. (Or, if you’re really tough, send them back to the start each time their egg drops!) The winner will be awarded a prize, such as candy, stickers and toys.
Pass the Parcel (包裹)Prepare a small prize that kids will love and then cover it with many layers (层) of paper. To play, have the children sit in a circle and pass the parcel around the circle while you play some fun music. When you stop the music, the child holding the parcel removes the outer layer of paper. Start the music again and continue until one child removes the final layer of paper.
Wheelbarrow (独轮手推车) RaceThe game is played in pairs. The first person is the wheelbarrow. He starts with his hands on the ground and his legs are held by the second person (the driver) in the pair. The wheelbarrow “walks” on his hands across the ground while the driver follows behind, holding his legs and directing the wheelbarrow. The first pair across the finishing line are the winners.
LimboTwo adults hold either end of a stick at stomach height. The children take turns going under the stick without touching it. If all the children have gone under the stick, the stick will be lowered. Then another round begins. Anyone who falls, touches the ground with hands or touches the stick is out.

4 . Pretending is fun. According to a recent study in the journal Child Development, kids are fond of this trick. Aiming to test the benefits of self-distancing on children’s perseverance (毅力), the researchers asked 180 kids, ages 4 or 6, to do a pretty boring computer task for 10 minutes. Although all the kids had to do was press a key when they saw a certain picture, they were told the task was important and that they had to be “good helpers,” They could take breaks to play a game on an iPad if they wanted.
The researchers divided the kids into three groups, and asked each to think about its performance on the given task from a certain perspective (视角): self-focused, third-person or model. Kids in the self-focused group asked themselves, “Am I working hard?” The third-person group reflected on the task by asking, “Is [the name of kid himself] working hard?” And the model group? Those children imagined they were either Batman, Bob the Builder or Dora the Explorer — well-known characters who are model hard workers — and were given props (小道具) to help them get in character. They were told to ask themselves, “Is [whatever character was chosen] working hard?”
The researchers found that the kids in both age groups who imagined themselves as a character spent a longer time on the task. The 6-year-olds who were asked to reflect in first person spent about 35 percent of the time on the task rather than on break, and the 4-year-olds just over 20 percent. But the 6-year-old children pretending to be fictional heroes spent 55 percent of their time working, while the 4-year-olds in this group spent 32 percent of their time on task.
The researchers believe that when the children used third-person or model characters, the kids distanced themselves from the boring task and tempting game, allowing them to gain more focus and self-control. “Taking an outsider’s perspective on one’s own behavior can improve in the face of entertaining distractions,” the researchers say.

6 . Since the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973, it has helped hundreds of species avoid extinction in the United States. The strong conservation policy has been used as a model in other countries. But it’s not as successful as it could be, a new study finds.
Researchers have discovered most species are not being protected until their numbers have become so low that their chance of recovery is slim.
“The ESA is an incredibly powerful, ambitious law for protecting our endangered wildlife. Yet, for decades, the agency primarily responsible for operating the ESA — the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) — has been starved of resources,” lead author Erich Eberhard says.
“As a result, we are very slow to give species the protection that they deserve. We typically wait until species are extremely rare and thus at extreme risk of extinction, and then, when a species is finally listed, the USFWS is straining its resources to try to recover it.”
In 1993, a study found that few species received protection under the ESA until their populations became very small. For the new study, researchers repeated the methods used in the earlier research to see whether protections have become better since the problem was first noted. They also looked at trends in “wait times” — the amount of time between when a species is identified as potentially needing protection and when it actually receives protection under the ESA.
“Our analysis suggests that, in the nearly 30 years since attention was first brought to this problem, we have not become more active in protecting endangered species,” says Eberhard.
The researchers found that the population sizes of species when they first became protected under the ESA are not statistically different from those in the 1993 study. They also discovered that there are long wait times between when a species is identified as likely needing protection and when they actually receive them.
“I can say that our study paints the current state of the ESA as a bit of cautionary (告诫的) tale for the strong conservation policy,” says Eberhard.
