文章大意:本文是说明文。文章讲述了社交媒体上关于学校儿童烹饪课程的帖子在互联网上疯传,学校儿童烹饪课程这一事件迅速成为中国微博上的热门话题,引发了网民们的热烈讨论。

1 . Last week, social media posts about a cooking course for school kids, as part of a life skill program to be delivered nationwide this September, went viral (迅速传播) on the Internet. It quickly became the top trending topic on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, sparking heated discussions among netizens.

Based on a new national curriculum standard for compulsory education launched by China’s Ministry of Education (MOE), it outlines different cooking and nutrition courses for students in different grades.

It is recommended that first and second graders learn how to peel fruits and brew tea and acquire a basic knowledge of nutrition as well as the ability to take part in basic cooking at home. Students in grades five and six are expected to acquire basic cooking skills such as frying and stewing, and be able to prepare a nutritious meal for their own families.

Apart from essential skills such as cooking and housekeeping, the program is also designed to enrich their knowledge in production work as well as services.

Many netizens hailed the life skill program and expressed their happiness toward the changing pattern of education.

“This should have been done earlier. Children nowadays lack adequate physical activities and can barely distinguish wheat from rice crops,” commented a user on Douyin. So far the comment has gained 24,000 likes and received nearly 500 replies.

Some netizens, however, expressed their concern that as a non-core curriculum, the program cannot be fully carried out in schools, while others are worried that the program will merely put an extra burden on parents.

“Through the learning and experience, students will develop respect for labor, the ability to make innovations and apply knowledge and skills in real life, and a sense of social responsibilities. Schools should take the lead in teaching life skills, while families should play a supporting role.” said Gu Jianjun, a MOE official.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

You can always believe patience and perseverance (毅力) are always rewarded whatever you do. This was a lesson Eli learned. Eli is my seven-year-old grandson. I always teach him things I think he should know, and he tries to teach me to play some of the games that I have for him on my iPad. He is very patient and persistent, but so far no success with that. It’s all just foreign to me.

The other day, Eli and his dad came for a visit. I could tell something was bothering him and asked him what was wrong. At first, he just shrugged and said nothing was wrong. But his body language told me a different story.

I asked again—pushing a little. Eli said that he was having a problem. He was trying to learn how to blow bubble-gum bubbles (口香糖泡泡). It seemed like all of his friends could blow bubble-gum bubbles, but he just couldn’t do it. I tried to explain how to do it, but aside from making funny faces and sticking out my tongue, nothing got accomplished. He tried to do what I said. His cheeks puffed out (鼓起). His face got red. He made funny noises. But no bubbles.

Then I had an idea. I asked Eli if he had another piece of gum—and not the ABC kind. He did. He gave it to me. Now, I hadn’t chewed a piece of bubble gum for years. Wow, it’s sweet. And one piece is huge. It filled my entire mouth. I don’t remember a piece of bubble gum being that big. I chewed and chewed and chewed. Finally, that piece of gum became more manageable.

I worked that piece of gum around in my mouth and wrapped it around my tongue, and then I slowly blew a bubble. Nice! I guess it’s like riding a bicycle. Even though I hadn’t tried blowing bubbles with bubble gum for years, I completely remembered how to do it at the first attempt.

After the bubble burst, I began to show Eli how to blow bubbles, but still nothing worked.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了什么是食物过敏、过敏的症状以及如何预防食物过敏。

7 . A food allergy (过敏) is a medical condition that occurs when the body’s protection system perceives certain foods as a threat and responds to them with an allergic reaction.

Symptoms (症状) of a food allergy

1     However, a severe reaction can take up to a few hours following exposure. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. And they may differ each time a specific allergen appears. Symptoms can include: a skin rash or hives, swelling of the face or lips, or feeling lightheaded or dizzy.     2     That can send the body into shock or make it difficult to breathe.

Judging a food allergy

Doctors consider a number of factors when investigating a food allergy. Those include both a patient’s symptoms and family history of allergies. A physical examination may be performed to rule out any other conditions.     3

Treating a food allergy

It may not be possible for a patient to completely avoid foods that induce (导致) an allergic reaction. For minor reactions, you can take some medicine. For severe reactions, however, turn to doctors for help.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种能够模仿黄蜂的嗡嗡声来吓走天敌的蝙蝠以及对此科学家们的不同的观点。

8 . Batesian mimicry (模仿) where a harmless species mimics a harmful one to escape enemies is widespread in animals. But most recorded examples of the phenomena are visual. For instance, the kingsnakes have evolved to look like a poisonous species, while the flower-loving flies have adopted the appearance of wasps (黄蜂). Now, for the first time, researchers have uncovered a kind of bat that has developed this trick related to sound to scare away enemies.

Danilo Russo first discovered the greater mouse-eared bat’s genius while working on his Ph. D. paper report on bats. “I noticed that when we handled the bats to take them out of the net or process them, they produced sounds just like wasps,” he said.

Years later, the animal ecologist at the University of Naples Federico II and his team set out to investigate if the sound was a coincidence or a way to frighten away enemies. The researchers recorded the cries of the bats when they were being caught. They then compared the sounds to four wasps. The similarities in the sounds convinced the scientists the bats were copying the insects to scare off enemies.

Russo and his team tested their theory on eight wild owls and eight human-raised owls. When the scientists played normal bat sounds, all the owls flew towards the speaker in search of the insects. However, the birds instantly flew away when exposed to the bat’s bee-like sound.

The researchers who published their findings observed that the wild birds showed greater fear than the ones brought up by humans. This indicated that the owls had previously been stung(叮) by the wasps and knew to clear away when they heard the buzzing sound.

“Birds tend to avoid stinging insects,” Russo says. “When nest boxes or tree holes are occupied by hornets, birds do not even attempt to explore them, not to mention nest there.”

9 . If you’re in the market for a new food or water dish for your cat, you might want to check out Free the Ocean’s Bamboo Cat Bowls. These are made from bamboo fibers and rice husks(稻壳).

The presence of bamboo—used as a renewable filler in the dish’s composition—is part of what makes it greener. Bamboo, which is technically a grass, grows faster than trees. Not surprisingly, it produces more oxygen and absorbs more carbon dioxide than trees.

Rice husk is a byproduct of rice production that poses a challenge to farmers, due to its resistance to decomposition (分解), digestion, and low nutritional value as animal feed. Its use as a filler provides a purpose for an otherwise useless material and, along with the bamboo, reduces the need for plastic fillers.

While plastic is still needed to make the cat bowl, the rationale behind their increased eco-friendliness is that less actual plastic is required when more natural fillers are used. The total amount of plastic required to make each product is reduced, because the bamboo fibres make up a significant percentage of the overall composite(合成) material.

Plastic cat dishes harbor bacteria even if pet owners clean them regularly, which can put your cat’s health at risk. However, the bamboo cat bowl is BPA-free and will not release harmful chemicals into your pet’s water the way that conventional plastic can. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial. And, of course, you can throw it in the top rack of the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

One customer said, “I prefer these cat food bowls and so do my cats. The cats like the low lip that makes it easy to eat out of and I like the fact that they’re made of bamboo and that purchasing them makes a difference for plastic pollution! Easy to wash in the dishwasher.”

1. What is the purpose of the text?

C.To raise people’s environmental awareness.
D.To call on people to make good use of bamboos.
2. What does the underlined word “rationale” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Cost.B.Reason.C.Doubt.D.Function.
3. What can we learn about the bamboo cat bowl?
A.It is cheap to buy.B.It is light to carry.
C.It is safe to use.D.It is easy to make.
4. How is paragraph 5 developed?

C.By asking questions.D.By making comparisons.

10 . My mother was a cook. Through her I learned to appreciate how a handful of ingredients could create delicious, nutritious meals on tight budgets. And in our home, nothing was ever wasted, as we shopped for food needs as opposed to wants.

I talk about all this because I’m absolutely shocked by the price of groceries. And, as someone who has been writing about the food industry for decades, and having weathered the economic depression when the price was also high—I have never seen things as bad as they are today.

Just recently, I couldn’t bring myself to purchase three small potatoes for almost $7. I saw cucumbers for $3.99 EACH. Some stores had grapes at a ridiculous $6.99 a pound. Add to that the alarming increase in everyday food, like coffee, milk and dairy, no wonder everyone is feeling the pinch(拮据).

I went shopping on the weekend, and came out with $186 worth of food in three grocery bags. I returned two items immediately. I purchased a liter of milk that had been marked down 50%—but I didn’t catch in time that the cashier forgot to ring in the discount, and charged me full price.

As I just feed my husband and myself, I can afford to purchase more organic proteins, like chicken. But I can also appreciate not every family can afford to do so, which is my major concern.

Can the increase of food prices be slowed down or even stopped? With the increasing consumer demand for foods not in season or readily available, plus people looking for fast convenience, I do believe the answer lies within us: We need to take back control over the foods we eat. Stop listening to all the hype (宣传) that convenience is better than cooking creativity, and just get back to basics.

People need to go back to basics, learn some fundamental kitchen essentials and truly be mindful of cooking practices. Just as an old saying goes, if you give someone a fish, they’ll eat for a day, but if you teach someone to fish, they’ll eat forever.

1. What might be the author?
A.A cook.B.A writer.C.A publisher.D.A businesswoman.
2. Why did the author return two items when shopping?
A.They cost too much.B.She took the items by mistake.
C.The cashier made a mistake.D.She found they were of no use.
3. How does the author feel about the current situation?
A.Puzzled.B.Helpless.C.Angry.D.Worried.
4. What is the author’s advice according to the text?
A.Do more cooking at home.B.Control food consumption.
C.Purchase more organic proteins.D.Learn to fish if you like eating fish.
