He held in his hand an open handbag, full of banknotes, and didn’t see the child as she made her request, except to blame her, as usual, for troubling him when he was busy. Antonio respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would be surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (锤打) from a side street, Antonio suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Antonio knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little. I thought she was supposed to take care of me and love me.
On the way home, I thought in my head what I would say to my mother when I arrived home: “Mom, I’m sorry, I know it is my fault, please forgive me…”

Temperatures dropped, and his hands and feet soon were completely numb with cold.

Where she stopped the sign read: “Madame Sofrónie. Hair Goods of All Kinds.” Della ran up the steps to the shop, out of breath.
“Will you buy my hair?” asked Della.
“Twenty dollars,” said Madame, lifting the hair with an experienced hand.
The next two hours went by as if they had wings. Della looked in all the stores to choose a gift for Jim. She found it at last. It was a chain-simple round rings of silver. It was perfect for Jim’s gold watch and it cost twenty-one dollars.
When Della arrived home she watched herself in the mirror. The hair had been ruined by her love and her desire to give a special gift.
At seven o'clock that night the coffee was made and the pan on the back of the stove was hot and ready to cook the meat.
Jim was never late coming home from work. Della held the silver chain in her hand and sat near the door. Then she heard his steps and she turned white for just a minute, whispering: “Please God, make him think I am still pretty.”
