文章大意:本文为一篇夹叙夹议文。讲述了作者的同事Dan质疑为什么作者询问问题前要先道歉,作者分析了其中的原因,并意识到这样做的问题,从而更少这样做。

1 . “Why do you always apologize before you ask a question?” my colleague, Dan asked. I looked at him _______, not understanding what he meant but felt that there was more than a trace of _______ in his tone.

“There’s no reason for it; you shouldn’t do that,” he said. “Sorry if it annoys you,” I responded. I probably annoyed him again by _______ again.

This happened over 35 years ago, but I still _______ it now. Asking questions in conversation isn’t that _______, at least not to me.

I figured out some _______. The first was self-consciousness and insecurity. Had I missed something the professor said? I knew some students, as a result of such _______, didn’t ask questions. I had enough confidence to ask, but not enough to not _______ the way of asking.

I don’t think it occurred to me at the time, but it did years later, that it also probably related to being _______. I knew that a woman was always told there was a line of not ________ others too aggressively.

Besides, I became conscious of not implying ________ — I didn’t want a professor to think I was questioning their expertise, or suggesting they were a ________ teacher. It seemed like a reasonable strategy to start by ________ that I was wrong or uninformed.

Before Dan’s comment, I hadn’t thought about it ________, and much less considered that there could be a ________ while doing it. But I was learning that there was, and it could be unpleasant. Fortunately, I think I’ve done it less now.

3 . Between balancing professional obligations with personal responsibilities and getting through the everyday tasks that keep you alive, your brain can get more than a little overwhelmed. Thankfully, it has a strategy to stay afloat: relying on heuristics (启发).

Heuristics are those little mental shortcuts that all of us use to solve problems and make quick, efficient judgment calls. They help cut down on your decision-making time and help you move from one task to the other without having to stop too long to plan your next step.     1     they can also lead to trouble causing us to miss important facts or develop unfair biases. Here are two of the big ones:

The Availability Heuristic

This heuristic comes into play any time you make a judgment about something based on your memories of related instances or available information that’s specific to that scenario. If you’re pressed for time and have to make a quick decision, it may help you quickly arrive at a conclusion.     2    . For example, when asked about the probability of plane crashes, homicides and shark attacks, people tend to overestimate the odds of each just because these events are so memorable — that’s this heuristic at play.     3    . If all you see in your feed is pictures of people partying in Ibiza, you’re likely to assume you’re the only one not having the time of your life. But that may not be true — you’re just jumping to that conclusion based on the evidence that’s available.

    4

When you categorize objects based on how similar they are to existing prototypes (样机), you’re applying such kind of heuristic. For example, if you assume a potential dating app suitor (求婚者) would make a better accountant than a CEO because he describes himself as “quiet”, you’re using the representative heuristic. If you presume another guy is more likely a massage therapist than a software engineer because he says he’s into essential oils and yoga,     5    .

A.The Authority Heuristic
B.The Representative Heuristic
C.In other cases, it can lead you away from the facts
D.It may also be responsible for social media’s negative effect on your mood
E.While heuristics are essential for freeing up your limited cognitive resources
F.you’re probably not seeing as many boring photo ops from other people’s couches
G.you’re making that assumption because those qualities sound more representative of the former than the latter

4 . When you teach a child how to solve puzzles, you can either let them figure it out through trial and error, or you can guide them with some basic rules and tips. Similarly, incorporating (合并) rules and tips into AI training—such as the laws of physics—could make them more efficient and more reflective of the real world. However, helping the AI assess the value of different rules can be a tricky task.

Researchers report that they have developed a framework for assessing the relative value of rules and data in “informed machine learning models” that incorporate both. They showed that by doing so, they could help the AI incorporate basic laws of the real world and better navigate scientific problems like solving complex mathematical problems and optimizing experimental conditions in chemistry experiments.

Embedding human knowledge into AI models has the potential to improve their efficiency and ability to make inferences, but the question is how to balance the influence of data and knowledge,” says first author. Hao Xu of Peking University. “Our framework can be employed to evaluate different knowledge and rules to enhance the predictive capability of deep learning models.”

Generative AI models like ChatGPT and Sora are purely data-driven—the models are given training data, and they teach themselves via trial and error. However, with only data to work from, these systems have no way to learn physical laws, such as gravity or fluid dynamics, and they also struggle to perform in situations that differ from their training data. An alternative approach is informed machine learning, in which researchers provide the model with some underlying rules to help guide its training process.

“We are trying to teach AI models the laws of physics so that they can be more reflective of the real world, which would make them more useful in science and engineering. We want to make it a closed loop (闭环) by making the model into a real AI scientist,” says senior author Yuntian Chen of the Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo.

1. How did the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By assessing basic rules.B.By comparison of similarity.
C.By explaining laws of physics.D.By analysis of human learning.
2. What does the underlined word “embedding” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Planting.B.Stressing.C.Employing.D.Revealing.
3. What makes generative AI models underperform?
A.They’re dependent too much on data.
B.They’re inflexible to carry out new tasks.
C.They struggle to learn new things.
D.It’s tough for them to deal with familiar situations.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Informed machine learning may be an alternative to generative AI.
B.Helping the AI assess the value of different rules can be a tricky task.
C.Generative AI models can be more reflective of the real world in the future.
D.Balancing training data and human knowledge makes AI more like a scientist.

This…was turning out to be a strange meeting. Though the one in black doesn’t know it, the one white is beginning to share the darker girl’s lack of enthusiasm. Like a fire in a sudden chill wind, her hope flickers and wanes. Now she grows uncomfortable, anxious, and wary. A slight but unshakable atmosphere drifts between them, one that feels unmistakably off. To her, it seems as though their very meeting is something the world finds to be simply…“wrong”. The ever-present glass, now scattered unevenly throughout and above the broken grounds, reflects that strange feeling.

Ordinarily, these shards would flock to them without their bidding:“happiness”to the girl in white, “tragedies” to the girl in black. Right now, every piece of glass in the air stands still. Perhaps half a hundred mirrors are quietly

suspended around the girls, half-catching images of the empty place that surrounds them. When the girl in white tries to call out to them, they will not even waver. It unsettles her:happiness placed beside horror, equally glinting and equally motionless. The only piece that will follow her is the one she can hold—the one that set her free.

She stares hard at the shadow girl.“If we’re in this together, ”she begins, leaning forward, “then what do you think about staying together? We…We could help each other, and maybe…”

She stops. The other girl is staring into the empty, canvas-like sky with a blank and uninformative expression. She doesn’t seem to be listening, but in truth she has followed every word.

“This is enough! I cannot stand it anymore!” My owner’s mother shouted at the top of her lungs. “Wolfie has to go! Have a dog that’s so big and eats so much! I cannot stand him urinating (小便) all over the house instead of in the small basin at his kennel (狗窝)!”

“But…” My owner cried.

“No buts, Bob!” His mother shouted. Her cold tone indicated she meant business.

Now think back on your most depressing moment. Then multiply that feeling of depression by a hundred. That was how I felt at that time. I would be separated from my beloved owner, Bob. This was the end and I had no one to blame but myself.

Lowering his head in sadness, Bob dragged himself towards his room and slowly closed the door. With a click, he locked it. I went back to my kennel and lay inside. I sighed deeply, tears welling up in my eyes. Soon, I would have no owner and I would have to find shelter, food and water by myself. Poor me.

After a while, I heard footsteps that were becoming louder by the second. I raised my head and saw Bob walking towards me with a leash (皮带) in his left hand.

“We are going to the market,” Bob told me as he tied one end of the leash around my neck.

A walk would make me feel better. I followed Bob and his mother to the market. Soon, we reached the long road that we had to cross to get to the market. After waiting for ages, the traffic light finally turned green. While crossing the road, Bob walked slowly as he seemed about leaving me. We were soon falling behind his mother.

From the comer of my eye, I saw something moving closer and closer at great speed. It was a red car speeding towards Bob’s mother! Bob also saw it but his mother was unaware of the danger approaching her! I caught a glance of the look of horror on Bob’s face. He had turned white in horror.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍各个领域的研究人员对切蛋糕这一问题的本质和方法的研究以及切蛋糕的规则在解决现实问题中的应用。

7 . Ariel Procaccia has thought a lot about how to cut a cake over the last 15 years. As the father of three children, he knows how hard it is to divide a birthday cake to everyone’s satisfaction. But it’s also because Procaccia’s work focuses on exploring the mathematical rules for dividing stuff up fairly. One way to do that is to think abstractly about dessert.

For decades, researchers have been asking the seemingly simple question of how to cut a cake fairly. The answer reaches far beyond birthday parties. A mathematical problem at its heart, cake cutting connects strict reasoning to real-world issues of fairness, and so attracts not only mathematicians, but also social scientists, economists and more. “It’s a very elegant model in which you can distill what fairness really is, and reason about it,” Procaccia says.

The simplest approach is called the “divider-chooser” method, where one person cuts the cake into two equal pieces in his view, and the other person picks first. Each receives a piece that they feel is as valuable as the other’s. But when personal preferences are taken into account, even the easiest rule becomes complicated. Suppose Alice and Bob are to divide a cake, and Alice knows Bob prefers chocolate, she may knowingly divide the cake unequally so the smaller piece contains more chocolate. Then Bob will choose according to his preference, and Alice will get the larger piece. Both of them are satisfied with what they get, but the meaning of fairness changes in this situation.

The cake is a symbol for any divisible good. When cake-cutting principles are employed to settle disagreements, they are potentially helping the world find solutions. Procaccia has used fair division algorithms (算法) to model food distribution. Social scientist Haris Aziz is exploring situations ranging from how to divide up daily tasks to how to best schedule doctors’ shifts in hospitals.

Even after decades of investigation, cake cutting isn’t like a simple jigsaw puzzle (拼图) with a well-defined solution. Instead, over time, it has evolved into a kind of mathematical sandbox, a constructive playground that brings together abstract proofs and easy applications. The more researchers explore it, the more there is to explore.

A.Its standard is stable.B.It prevents unequal division.
C.Its concept is complex.D.It dominates personal preferences.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning cake cutting?
A.The application of its rules.B.The details of its process.
C.The problems it produces.D.The harmony it symbolizes.
4. What is the best title for the text?

It had been a challenging but rewarding term, filled with hard work and a thirst for knowledge. As I handed in my final assignment and saw it was graded A, a sense of pride and satisfaction washed over me. Little did I know that my accomplishments had not gone unnoticed by my families, who had been closely observing my progress.

At the first day of summer vacation, my mother told me excitedly that we would pay a visit to Marco the next day to cheer for my progress in academic study. When I got the good news, I felt on top of the world and could not hold back my high spirits. As I lay in bed that night, a mix of anticipation and delight welled up in my heart, and I slid into a dream-filled sleep, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the coming adventure.

After we arrived in Marco, my parents said that we would first visit the Marco tower. Marco Tower, built in the late 19th century, is a historic landmark that showcases the rich architectural heritage of the city. It is also considered one of the top tourist attractions in the region. Upon hearing the inspiring news, I bounced up and down with joy. But then I felt a bit uneasy because of my fear of heights.

Inside the lift, my palms grew sweaty as the anxiety consumed me. I paced back and forth in the tower lift, unsure of whether I would have the courage. After the lift reached the specific floor, I gasped (倒吸一口气) in horror. The floor here was made of glass, so one could appreciate the height of the tower and take a real adventure. Seeing my family both take out their phones to shoot the grand views, I felt under pressure. Then my mother smiled at me and said delightedly, “Just take it easy and you can do it.”

Centering myself on the ice of the skating rink (溜冰场), I prepared for my skating performance. A confident smile spread across my face. This was the day I’d perform my best skating in a year, attempting a challenging jump known as the axel (前外一周半跳). My friend Caleb yelled from the stands, “You can do it, Harper!” My other friends crossed their fingers. My dad also shouted, “You look beautiful!”

As the music started, I was fully prepared. With a graceful circle, spins, and a broad smile, I began my performance. Everything progressed smoothly until I reached the crucial axel jump. As I prepared to jump, suddenly a mix of excitement and nerves filled me. To be frank, I could do it when I practiced off-ice, but I’d only landed it on-ice several times in my entire life. My coach had strategically placed it at the start of my routine to ensure my legs were at their peak for this demanding move.

I took the leap, but performed a distinct jump. It was a mere half-circle, falling short of the axel’s one and a half. I heard my friends sigh and saw my coach raise an eyebrow.

Determined, I attempted the axel again, but failed. I repeatedly tried and failed, spending so much time on the ice. When my routine ended, my dress was wet and I was far behind the beat. The silence was deafening, marking the most embarrassing moments of my skating career. As I skated away, I could sense the weight of everyone’s stare upon me.

As I made my way to my coach and dad, I heard the crowd cheering for Marlo, a charming eight-year-old, who was gracefully skating past me, leaving me with an intense sense that my skating career had come to an end.

My coach handed me my skate guards, asking if I was improvising (即兴创作) my routine. I didn’t know how to reply. My friends were embarrassed for me, avoiding my eyes. They seemed to discuss me except Caleb, my close friend. He brought me hot chocolate and apologized before skating his own routine.

I was never “that girl” — the one who had charming appearance, and who enjoyed a colorful social life. I was another girl entirely, one who was considered “nice girls”, and the top student in class. Not that I didn’t care about friends or fun, I just didn’t think it was worth putting lots of time and effort into changing how I looked, how I acted, even as I started high school.

Marissa was “that girl” — fun to be around, good to know. We are different, but our friendship began the first time we met at an exciting soccer match, on the second day of freshmen year. The excitement of the game and our shared interest in soccer connected us, I was deeply impressed with her enthusiasm, while she admired my calm. Our conversations went smoothly, and our relationship quickly turned into a close bond.

However, as the school year progressed, Marissa’s outgoing personality began to conflict with my reserved nature. She stood out in social situations, constantly asking me to attend parties and social events. While I appreciated her efforts to include me, I felt awkward and uncomfortable to be forced into unfamiliar surroundings. Our once harmonious friendship started to crack, I tried to turn down her invitations, but in vain.

One evening, Marissa persuaded me to attend a large party at a classmate’s house. Surrounded by loud music and strange faces, I felt uneasy and upset. Marissa was the queen of the party, leaving me feeling extremely lonely. Her personality attracted others to her, creating a barrier between us.
