During the vacation, I quarreled with my mother and then we begin to overlook each other. Anyway, when that was time for me to go back to school, she went up to me with a box of homemade pancake in her hand. Patting me on shoulder, she said gently, “Take this on case you feel hungry on the train. Sweetheart, you’re always my good girl.” Still feeling a bit of angry, I refused her but quietly turned away. Had nothing to do on the train, I couldn’t help thinking about the scene of leaving and felt terrible sorry. What I wish I could have said sorry to her sincerely before I left!

4 . When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again. After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night. We found him just in time.

This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, if he had made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.

Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he is still likely to turn around many times, but he is seldom lost.

There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation. A rainstorm may catch him without a compass in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.

When this happens, the normal first reaction is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.

The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

1. The writer suggested that if the man had not been found, ___________.
A.he would have been shot by a gun
B.he would have become confused
C.he would have been attacked by wild animals
D.he would have been in great danger
2. According to the text, if a person gets lost in the forest, at the very beginning, ___________.
A.he will worry about being laughed at
B.he will push himself to find his way out
C.he will feel sorry that he didn’t prepare well enough
D.he will feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friends
3. What is the most important when a person tries to find his way in the woods?
A.Intelligence.B.Observation.
C.Direction.D.Chance.
4. The writer tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who_________.
A.go into the woods by themselves
B.keep their head when they are in trouble
C.are frightened when they think they are lost
D.don’t know how to signal for help properly

5 . If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2012.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its carplane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2012.

“It’s the next ‘wow’ vehicle, ”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh. “Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”

The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving. A runway is still required to take off and land.

The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.

The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble of trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go. When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.

The carplane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers. Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.

The Transition’s price tag: $194,000. But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS. Another option is a fullplane parachute.

“If you get into a very awful situation, it is the necessary safety option,” Gersh said. So far, the company has more than 70 orders with deposits. “We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.

1. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that________.
A.people might drive a carplane in 2012
B.carplanes will be popular in 2012
C.both Transition and Ferrari can take off and land
D.Richard Gersh is the vice president of Massachusetts
2. It takes the carplane one minute to________.
A.fold and unfold its wingsB.meet flying safety regulations
C.land in the airportD.unfold wings for flying
3. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The carplane needs a runway to take off and land.
B.The carplane may fly as high as normal planes.
C.To meet aircraft regulations, the company has been working with FAA.
D.People can park the carplane in the garage at their home.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Cars with Wings Can Fly As Fast As Plane
B.Which To Choose: A Ferrari Or A CarPlane?
C.A More Convenient and Cheaper Way To Fly
D.Cars with Wings May Be Just Around the Corner

When I was in Australia, I accompanied a friend on his driving test. I was     1     (amaze) to learn that in Australia, people hardly go to driving schools. Instead, many people practice on the road with a licensed driver sitting next     2     them. But this doesn’t mean that getting a driving license is a piece of cake. This was the third time that my friend     3     (apply) to take the driving test.

The first time, after confidently driving over an intersection (十字路口), the     4     (examine) asked him to pull over and said that he should have stopped     5     car and looked right first and then left to make sure there was no other car approaching.

The second time, a car rushing in front caught him by surprise and he hit the brakes too hard. The examiner got     6     (anger) and asked him to get out. In Australia, the test is not about driving skills,     7     about following every rules.

After finally passing the test, my friend drove very     8     (careful) because in the first year of having a driving license, running two red lights results in the license being suspended (暂停使用). 7 . There are many programs for high school students today that help lonely teenagers deal with loneliness. However, loneliness is not only an issue for teens but also an important and rarely acknowledged one in the elderly.

In Britain, Tracey Crouch was appointed to be the first Minister of Loneliness in order to address the issues caused by loneliness. This is the first time such a position has been created.

In Britain, there are around 9 million people who say they are lonely frequently. In Germany, a study conducted by Ruhr University Bochum found that 20 percent of people over the age of 85 felt lonely, and 14 percent of those between age 45 and 65 felt socially lonely. In the United States, more than 25 percent of the population lives alone, more than 50 percent are unmarried.

Loneliness is generally associated with heart disease, overweight, and anxiety. Additionally, the stress from loneliness can cause your cells to change on a molecular(分子)level that reduces its abilities to defend your body against diseases. In fact, doctors believe having feelings of loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day in regard to its effect on health!

In Britain, the new Minister of Loneliness will help introduce government policies on the issue and fund a charity—an organization for helping people in need, to devote their efforts towards aiding loneliness. There are charities that link lonely seniors to high school students in order to give them a line of communication whenever they feel lonely!

The possibilities for the new Minister of Loneliness are endless. For example, she can provide education services to household businesses so that they can identify lonely customers if they see one. Loneliness fits into the category of being a social issue that must be monitored by the entire community in order to help those in need. Therefore, government involvement in medical services and care for seniors and others is vital for happy seniors.

1. How does the author develop Paragraph 3?
A.By listing some statistics.
B.By giving examples of lonely people.
C.By pointing out similarities and differences.
D.By comparing different cultures in different countries.
2. What does the underlined word “equivalent” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Relevant.B.Similar.
C.Opposite.D.Superior.
3. What will the Minister of Loneliness do?
A.Do housework for lonely people.
B.Develop friendships with the elderly.
C.Help fund charities to aid lonely people.
D.Communicate with anxious school students.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.UK becomes the capital of loneliness.B.Loneliness affects old people’s life worldwide.
C.Many teenagers suffer from loneliness.D.UK’s Minister of Loneliness settles loneliness.

8 . No spacecraft will ever land on the sun. the sun is a flaming ball of gas that reaches thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. But next year, a ship from Earth will fly closer to it than any man made craft has flown before. The mission(任务)is a big development for scientists and, maybe, for everyone else.

In September 2018, NASA plans to launch the Parker Solar Probe. After a journey of nearly 90 million miles, it will fly within 3.8 million miles of the sun. within two months of launching, the probe is expected to reach the sun’s corona(日冕). That’s the sun’s outer atmosphere of gases.

Getting there won’t be easy. Designing a spacecraft tough enough to hold up to the sun’s heat has proved difficult. But that hasn’t stopped engineers from trying. Temperatures in the corona can reach millions of degrees. The probe will limit itself to regions where things get no hotter than 2,500oF. That’s still a heavy heat load for a spacecraft. But a 4.5-inch-thick heat shield(罩)will protect the probe’s camera and scientific instruments.

NASA says the data the probe collects could provide knowledge into the physics of stars. Our sun is special to us. But as a star, it’s rather common. So the better we understand how it works, the better we understand all stars of its mass and color.

Perhaps the most important is what the probe may show us about solar storms. During solar storms, charged particles stream through the solar system. They can disable communications satellites and shut down powder systems. One study has found that a very intense solar storm could cause up to $2 trillion in damage in the US alone. It could also black out the East Coast for a year.

Understanding solar storms might allow us to predict them and protect ourselves. That could make even a mission with a billion-plus price tag one of NASA’s great bargains.

1. What can we learn about the probe?
A.It’ll fly closer to the sun that the previous ones
B.It’s the first man made instrument to fly to the sun
C.It’ll get to the core of the sun in nearly two months
D.It’ll fly about 3.8 million miles to reach the corona.
2. What is the challenge for the engineers?
A.Directing the probe to collect data
B.Reducing the temperature of the probe
C.Building a shield against the heat
D.Limiting the probe to proper regions
3. What might be the best title?
A.Exploring the starsB.Getting close to the sun
C.Designing a spaceshipD.Protecting the earth
4. Where does the value of the mission lie?
A.Monitoring satellitesB.Exploring solar energy
C.Developing scientific instrumentsD.Forecasting solar storms

9 . The ride-sharing company Uber has removed its self-driving cars from the streets of San Francisco, California. The action came after a dispute between Uber and state officials over whether the vehicles needed special permits to operate.

Uber recently launched testing of its self-driving service in San Francisco. But shortly after the launch, California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) told the company to stop the self-driving vehicles. State officials said the Uber cars needed the same special permit given to about 20 other companies testing self-driving technology in California. Uber argued that its technology does not make vehicles fully autonomous, and so the special permit was not needed. It added that all of Uber's "self-driving" cars have a driver sitting in the passenger seat to take over if needed.

The head of Uber's self-driving technology, Anthony Levandowski, explained the company's position in a blog post. He said the self-driving Uber vehicles do use high-technology tools to assist drivers. But they are not fully autonomous and require a driver to be at the controls at all times. He compared the technology to solar carmaker Tesla's advanced driver assist tools. Telsa's Autopilot system allows its cars to steer in a lane, change lanes, and speed up or slow down based on nearby traffic. The company tells drivers that, when using Autopilot, they should still always be ready to take control of the vehicle. Vehicles equipped with these high-tech driver assist tools do not need a special permit to operate in California.

It's hard to understand why the DMV would seek to require self-driving Ubers to get permits when it accepts that Tesla's autopilot technology does not need them," Levandowski wrote. San Francisco's mayor, Ed Lee, praised the DMV for stopping Uber's self-driving vehicles. He said he supports self-driving development and testing. But only under conditions that put human bicyclists' and pedestrian safety first."

1. What does the underlined word "dispute" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Discussion.B.Disagreement.
C.Fighting.D.Meeting.
2. Why does Uber say that the special permit was not needed?
A.Because Uber's "self driving" cars are fully autonomous.
B.Because there are passenger seats in Uber's "self-driving" cars.
C.Because no drivers are needed in some Uber's "self-driving" cars.
D.Because Uber's "self-driving" cars can be operated by humans when necessary.
3. What can we know from the passage?
A.Uber's self-driving cars need human drivers.
B.Telsa's Autopilot needs special permits too.
C.Uber's self-driving cars are completely autonomous.
D.Telsa's Autopilot system is better than Uber's self-driving technology.
4. What can we infer from Ed Lee's words?
A.He doesn't think DMV is right.
B.Uber's self-driving cars should be supported.
C.Uber's serf-driving cars are not safe enough.
D.One should be careful while walking or cycling in streets.

10 . Small and round transparent water bottles filled with natural water could help provide a solution to London's plastic waste problem, according to Skipping Rocks Lab, the company in the British capital that produces them. They added that the balls have been made of plant and seaweed extracts and will decompose(分解)after four to six weeks if not consumed.

With many cities struggling to get rid of vast numbers of used plastic water bottles, the ‘Ooho’ has begun to meet the thirst of consumers in San Francisco and London. A report published last Thursday said more than 4,000 plastic bottles had been removed from the River Thames in a month last year, proving the scale of the waste problem.

"We think Ooho may not be the solution for all the applications that plastic bottles have, but definitely for short term consumption it could be a solution," said Rodrigo, the founder of Skipping Rocks Lab. In a trial near London Bridge last Wednesday, Ooho drew a mixture of surprise, amusement and delight among those who sampled them. London's city assembly said Ooho was a step forward. "It could be part of the solution but not the only solution. You also need to be able to refill bottles at railway stations for example," said Leonie Cooper, the Chair of the assembly's environment committee.

The company aims to target, among other consumers, marathon runners, who will be able to eat the Oohos mid-race without concerns about the environment. It is also considering sealing alcohol for a whole new market. "People see these small round bubbles and they just think ‘shots’. So that's definitely something we're looking at," said Skipping Rocks Lab Chief Operating Officer Lise. "We have sealed alcohol, we want to perfect it, and hopefully this will be the great change of the future."

1. ‘Ooho’ can help solve the plastic waste problem because ________.
A.it is small and transparentB.it is filled with natural water
C.it is made of plant and seaweedD.it can disappear some time later
2. How is Rodrigo's comment on ‘Ooho’?
A.Subjective.B.Unreal.
C.Objective.D.Ridiculous.
3. In which column can we find the text?
A.Technology and Invention.B.Health and Medicine.
C.Industry and Economy.D.Tourism and Development.
