1 . It is easy to keep your spirits bright when life is going along smoothly and good news seems to turn up at every turn. It is an entirely different picture when life goes off course or bad news appears. The question then becomes: How do we keep our spirits bright throughout the different stages of life?     1    .

Get Enough Sleep

It wasn’t until I became a mother that I realized how important a good night’s sleep truly is.     2    . Sleep is such an amazing gift to recharge and start.

Back to Basics(基本)

When I feel tired with too much to do, I love to put on my shoes and get outside for a run.     3    . Getting back to basics can include things like: getting outside, having real conversations with real people, enjoying a meal with a loved one or doing an activity that brings you joy.

Time Management

If life feels like it is out of control and you can’t keep up, see what happens when you try to manage your time. There are many time management systems out there that can help. Have event reminders(提醒) on your phone and computer.     4    . Start your day by writing a list of what you plan to achieve. And sometimes we also need to let go of things that aren’t important.

    5

Keeping our deepest desires and dreams alive is the very fuel that keeps our spirits bright. Give yourself the gift of having goals and dreams, and don’t allow fear to have a say in how big your dreams may be.

A.Dream Big
B.We can keep your spirits bright anytime.
C.Set an alarm to remind you to leave early.
D.Try out the following if they sound like a fit for you.
E.For this reason, I should never feel tired in the outside.
F.Getting enough pillow time has a way of making us feel more human.
G.There’s something about nature and fresh air that gets my stress away.

2 . From July to October every year, about a quarter of the world’s blue whales feed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. But the whales currently face a major threat in their favorite feeding area. Ships carrying cargo (货物)sail in the same area at the same time. All too often, the whales’ paths and the ships’ travel lines overlap (重叠), and a ship will hit a whale.

According to a new study, these ship strikes have become a serious threat to the overall population of the world’s blue whales. Only about 10,000 of the creatures still exist worldwide. Blue whales are the largest known animals ever to live on Earth. Even so, if hit by a container ship, a blue whale will likely die from its injuries.

In 2007 alone, large ships killed five blue whales in the waters off San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that because there are so few whales already, losing three to five from the California whale population every year is a significant loss. “The estimated population of blue whales in this part of the Pacific is 2,500”, says Sean Hastings, a NOAA analyst. “So every whale counts toward this species moving off the endangered-species list.”

Now, marine scientists must figure out how to protect the whales from the giant container ships. One very simple program is already under way in the Santa Barbara Channel, a waterway that separates mainland California from the nearby Channel Islands.

The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has asked large container ships passing through the area to voluntarily slow down. Sailing slower will allow the ships‟ crew (船员)more time to change course before hitting a whale.

Several of the world’s largest shipping lines are set to participate in the new program. For every ship that passes through the Santa Barbara Channel at or below the reduced speed of 12 knots (海里/小时), the company that owns the ship will be paid $2,500.

1. From Paragraph 1, we can know that_____.
A.people intend to illegally hunt blue whales for money
B.large ships often carrying goods may pollute the sea
C.the container ships may hit the blue whales frequently
D.there is fewer fish in blue whales‟ favorite feeding area
2. Why is the death of several whales regarded as significant loss to the world's blue whales?
A.Because the number of the blue whales is so small.
B.Because other blue whales will be scared away.
C.Because blue whales are the largest animals in the world.
D.Because many blue whales get killed throughout the year.
3. According to Sean Hastings, it’s inferred that            .
A.the number of the blue whales is decreasing sharply.
B.the blue whales are still on the endangered-species list.
C.most of the world’s blue whales live in the Pacific Ocean.
D.blue whales are often disturbed by other endangered creatures.
4. What are the last three paragraphs mainly about?
A.The basic responsibility of a sailor.
B.Measures to protect the blue whales.
C.The world’s largest shipping lines.
D.Ways to slow down the speed of the ships.

6 . Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in a merciless way. They may do brutal things to others, and not by accident. For example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone, not in self-defense. He seemed to kill with no emotion.

Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression—to get cold feet—that has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.

Cold can also affect your shoulder. You “give someone the cold shoulder” when you refuse to speak to him. You treat him in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him face-to-face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you or to someone who has lied about you to others.

“A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and show no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.

“Out in the cold” is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

1. The passage is intended to tell us that ________.
A.cold weather has a great effect on human bodies
B.many English expressions contain the word “cold”
C.cold is a word closely linked with human emotions
D.the word “cold” has many different meanings in English
2. The underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1 most probably means“________”.
A.impoliteB.illegal
C.cruelD.extreme
3. You can say Tom ________ if the teacher gives all the boys except him a pen as a prize.
A.is given the cold shoulder
B.is left out in the cold
C.has got cold feet
D.is murdered by a cold-blooded killer
4. We can draw a conclusion from the passage that ________.
A.all the expressions containing the word “cold” have negative meanings
B.all the expressions containing the word “cold” have something to do with cold
C.people who show no human emotions or feelings have cold blood
D.many parts of the human body can be badly affected by cold

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate

Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.    1    Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.

◇Talk things out. Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs.    2

◇Don't expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet.    3    And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.

◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first.    4

◇Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy.    5    But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.

A.So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B.This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C.Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D.You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E.It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F.Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G.Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.

Soon, you’ re going to have to move out!” cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind, or at least known in my neighborhood.

One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1. 25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.

Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren’t for the pleasure they give, it wouldn’ t be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. Bushes must be pruned (剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake.

Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing (施肥) have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long disappeared under the thick leaves.

Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold. First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw (缩回) my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June. But they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light.

Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind, I’ ll think about that tomorrow.

1. What are the requirements for the healthy growth of rose?
A.Frequent pruning and fertilizing.
B.A lot of care and the right soil.
C.Tomato plants grown alongside.
D.Cages placed around the roots.
2. The writer planted the tomato plant because______.
A.there was room for it in the garden
B.the soil was just right for it
C.it cost only $1. 25
D.the roses’ branches needed to be covered
3. This year the writer’s roses were_______.
A.removed from the rose bed
B.largely hidden under the tomato plant
C.mostly damaged by too much sunlight
D.picked along with the tomatoes
4. By saying “the prize so dearly won” in Paragraph 5, the writer wants to_________.
A.express her liking for the roses
B.show the hardship of growing the roses
C.show the difficulty in picking the tomatoes
D.express her care for the tomatoes
