文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,作者通过讲述儿子与自己在学习方式上的不同的故事,告诉我们不同的人有不同的学习方式,要因材施教。

1 . I hold a strong belief that if a child is raised with approval (认可), he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way.

Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he should concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up. Could he be more intent while standing up?

This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline (纪律) to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.

Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits (特点), and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.

I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

1. At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him ________.
A.finish his homework on time
B.keep silent in the room
C.pay more attention to his study
D.get right answers
2. Inspired by the case of his son, the author began to doubt _______.
A.the old form of education
B.the importance of parents
C.the relationship between kids and their parents
D.the good grades of some kids
3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is RIGHT?
A.We should help kids correct their wrong ways.
B.Parents should love and accept their kids.
C.Parents should study their kids’ DNA.
D.Kids should be taught to behave themselves.
4. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A.Study Hard and You’ll Be Successful.
B.Be Friendly to Your Children.
C.Parents’ Help with Their Children’s Study.
D.Children’s Success in Their Own Style.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了什么是“同伴压力”,同伴压力可以给人带来好的或不好的影响,同时介绍了一些方法和建议帮助读者去面对和处理“同伴压力”。

2 . “Come on! All of us are cutting (逃课) maths. Who wants to go to take that quiz? We’re going to take a walk and get lunch instead. Let’s go!” says the coolest kid in your class. Do you do what you know is right and go to maths class, take the quiz and all? Or do you give in and go with him?

People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act and get you to do something, it’s called peer pressure. It’s something everyone has to deal with — even adults.

Peers influence your life, even if you don’t realize it, just by spending time with you. You learn from them, and they learn from you. It’s only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group.

Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system, or you got others excited about your new favorite book, and now everyone is reading it. Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them.

It’s difficult to say “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and what is wrong can help you know what is the right thing you should do.

It can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who is willing to say “no” too. If you continue to face peer pressure and you’re finding it difficult to handle it, talk to someone you trust — a parent, or a teacher. They can help you feel much better and prepare you for the next time you face peer pressure.

1. According to the first paragraph, what is the kid doing?
A.Encouraging other kids to cut class.
B.Making an announcement about a dinner party.
C.Planning some interesting activities after school.
D.Persuading kids to take a quiz with him.
2. What can be known according to the author?
A.For kids, peer pressure may do more harm than good.
B.Kids today are under greater pressure than before.
C.Peer pressure exists among people of all age groups.
D.Maths is the most difficult subject for most kids.
3. What is suggested to the readers in the last paragraph?
A.Learning to refuse their friends in a polite way.
B.Getting support from someone else if necessary.
C.Making more close friends while at school.
D.Building closer relations with their parents and teachers.
4. Whom is the text probably written for?
A.The parents.B.The teachers.
C.The friends.D.The students.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者从自身的角度向我们讲述了成长中的一些烦恼,并告诉我们,如果我们意识到这些烦恼只是人生道路上的小障碍,它们就会变成收获。

3 . Growing pains and gains

It’s not easy to grow up. Actually it’s far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel stuck, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. When we look back on all the challenges in life with a positive attitude, we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!

As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along. not because they wanted me to suffer(受苦)but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They’ve always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.

Every moment of our lives is either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours!

A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps(凸块)on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

1. According to paragraph 1, we learn that when we are young, ______.
A.life is full of joy
B.life is easy for us
C.we know we can stay young forever
D.we sometimes can’t do things we like
2. When the author was young, she was forced by her parents to ______.
A.take music lessons
B.turn gains into pains
C.look back on challenges
D.live a successful life
3. What does the underlined phrase “to its fullest” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Directly.B.Completely.C.Carefully.D.Terribly.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Growing pains are necessary for us to grow up.
B.We all have to experience growing pains.
C.A little hard work and sweat are harmful to us.
D.Life without fear is a better choice for us.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要讲述了高效学习的几个方法。

4 . Many students study by reading their notes and textbooks over and over again. But studies show there are more effective ways to help you study smarter.

1     Many students know what they are expected to do. Yet many often fail to plan ahead. So they need first to set a reachable target. Break it into pieces and make them happen one by one. It may seem strange at first. But after two weeks or more, it becomes a normal thing.

Don’t just reread.     2     Rereading is like looking at the answer to a puzzle, rather than doing it yourself. It looks like it makes sense. But until you try it yourself, you don’t really know if you understand it.

Find examples. Abstract concepts can be hard to understand. It tends to be far easier to form a mental image if you have a concrete example of something.     3     On its own, that concept might be hard to remember. But if you think about a lemon or vinegar, it becomes easier!

Dig deeper. It’s hard to remember countless facts and figures if you don’t push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about? Why do they matter? Psychologists call this elaboration(深究). It’s taking class material and asking many how and why questions about it.     4

Practice more. Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills.     5     In a study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored more than a full letter grade better, on average, than did students who studied the way they normally had.

As a teen, Cynthia Nebel studied by reading her textbooks, worksheets and notebooks. “Over and over and over again,” recalls this psychologist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Now, she adds, “we know that’s one of the most common bad study skills that students have.”

A.Make a budget and save it.
B.Make a plan and stick to it.
C.The same should go for learning.
D.However, not all can apply to students.
E.In other words, don’t just accept facts at face value.
F.Sadly, reading books and notes repeatedly is common for many students.
G.For instance, sour foods usually taste that way because they contain an acid.

6 . The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we’re eating, we sit in the car and we sit while we're watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.

New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.

However, Mr.Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often. “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”

Mr.Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now,in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.

Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving, That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.

Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.

1. The underlined word “ubiquitous” is the closest     .
A.危险的B.尴尬的
C.舒适的D.普遍的
2. Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katmarzyk?
A.Sitting too long may help increase one’s life.
B.Exercise is important, but so is not sitting.
C.Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one’s horizons.
D.Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.
3. What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4?
A.It’s a relatively new area of study.
B.It’s a hot subject studied by experts.
C.It’s a study that begins too late.
D.It’s ignored by many experts.
4. Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more?
A.To give them more comfort .
B.To improve their work efficiency.
C.To offer them the chance to exercise.
D.To seek pleasure while working.

8 . Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need.

Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been home-schooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone, I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier after you know it.

David, Aged 19

I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

1. What can we infer from Sharon about high school?
A.Teachers are quite strict.
B.Students often stay up at night.
C.Teachers provide little care for students.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲了由于我和哥哥开车走错了路,在路上遇到了一位需要帮助的司机。虽然我们还没有解决自己的问题,但哥哥非常主动的帮助解决了那位司机的困难。

9 . My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this distraction, my brother took a wrong turn.

Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.

As we drove forward, my brother noticed a beat-up (破旧的) black Mustang (福特野马汽车) pulled over to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tyre.

My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a dangerous neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”

What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.

1. Why did the author’s brother take a wrong turn?
A.He was lost in thought.
B.He was confused by the road signs.
C.He was new to this part of the city.
D.He was focused on his conversation.
2. Why did the driver call the author and the author’s brother a “breath of fresh air”?
A.They helped him with his flat tyre.
B.They saved him from a minor car accident.
C.They showed him the right way back home.
D.They comforted him and gave him some money.
3. Which word best describes the author’s brother?
A.Double-faced.B.Strong-willed.C.Warm-hearted.D.Quick-minded.
4. Where is the text probably from?
A.A guidebook.B.A news report.C.An advertisement.D.A storybook.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了四种正确的学习方法。

10 . The aim of students who came to school is to study. But to study requires a right way, or you waste either the time or the money. The following are the ways of studying.

The best time for reading is morning, because in the morning, the air is fresh and the mind is clear. For that reason, we can get good results.

In studying we must have patience. If we have not known a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next one till we have learned the first one.

When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book, or we can get nothing from the book while we are reading.

We must always ask “whys”. If it is not well understood, write it down and ask our teachers or our parents, or friends. In any possible way, we must know it completely and what we’ve learned can be used well and made better.

Though there are many ways for studying, yet the above mentioned will be quite enough if we can keep them in heart and do so.

1. The passage tells us ________.
A.the importance of reading
B.to pay attention to the ways of studying
C.to read in the morning
D.to have patience in studying
2. How many ways of studying are mentioned in this passage?
