1 . Everyone wants to perform well at school. Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!

1    I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class.

Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test.    2       In this way, it will help you learn more effectively by thinking about what you are writing.

Don’t skip school. You will be missing courses.    3    However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.

Keep a good attitude (态度) towards things. If you have an “ I don’t care about school or this class” attitude, then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems. The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students.     4

Always ask questions.     5     If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc.

A.Be prepared.
B.Write in your own words.
C.Staying organized will be helpful.
D.Pay attention to what the teacher says.
E.It is true that you could make up the work.
F.There is no shame (羞愧)in needing some help.
G.Try not to laugh when other students make mistakes.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了潜水服的历史及特性。

2 . When water is cold, people will find it uncomfortable to swim. Wetsuits(潜水服)can help keep people warm.    1    So wetsuits are important. In many water sports, you can find people wearing them.

The wetsuit doesn't have a long history. According to studies, the wetsuit only began during WWII when Italians started wearing wetsuits that were made of rubber. And it was widely believed in 1951, Hugh Bradner began working to improve the equipment.     2

Now there are many kinds of wetsuits. Contrary to what some may think, wetsuits do not work by keeping the diver(潜水员)dry; they are designed to let water into the suit. This thin layer of water is trapped(保存)between the diver and the suit. And it's allowed to move between the skin of the diver and the inside layer.     3    And it can help keep the diver comfortable during the diving process. That's why it's important to have a nice, tight fit for a wetsuit.

4    The shorter wetsuit often provides cover for the main part of people's bodies. This kind of wetsuit works well with boating, water skiing, swimming, etc. A longer wetsuit can completely cover the body, including long legs. With more protection for the body, it may be used in cool weather conditions.

Wetsuits can also differ in thickness. They range from about 0. 5mm to 8mm in thickness. It's true that thicker wetsuits are more likely to affect your movement.     5    Generally, the colder the water you plan to dive in, the thicker the wetsuit should be.

A.But they're much better at giving you warmth.
B.As for the difference, wetsuits can differ in size.
C.The history of the wetsuit is an interesting story.
D.This led to the development of a kind of new wetsuit.
E.Many wetsuits are very light and easy to wear and take off.
F.As a result, the water gradually warms up to body temperature.
G.And they can provide protection from the sun and cuts from rocks.

3 . AQUILA Children’s Magazine is the most intelligent read for curious kids. Full of enthusiastic articles and challenging puzzles, every issue covers science, history and general knowledge. AQUILA is a quality production, beautifully illustrated with contemporary artwork throughout.

Intelligent reading for 8-12-year-olds

Cool science and challenging projects

Inspires self-motivated learning

Exciting new topics every issue

AQUILA is created and owned by an independent UK company. It has 28 pages, printed on high-quality paper and there are no advertisements or posters. Instead it is full of well-written articles, thought-provoking (令人深思的) ideas and great contemporary artwork. Each monthly issue is centred around a new topic.

AQUILA works as a superb learning extension to current primary (or KS2 and KS3) curriculum (课程), but it is much more than that! Entertaining and always surprising, AQUILA is recommended because it widens children’s interest and understanding, rather than encouraging them to concentrate only on their favourite subjects. It gives children a well-rounded understanding of the world, in all its complexity.

The concepts in AQUILA can be challenging, requiring good comprehension and reading skills. Eight years is usually a good age to start. Some gentle interest from an adult is often helpful at the start.

4 . There’s a child-like joy that comes with ordering something online — whether it be clothes or kitchen facilities. We sit refreshing the postal service to see when our items will arrive, and we become overly excited, hopeful and anxious.

Ryan Howes, a clinical psychologist from Pasadena California, has interpreted this phenomenon as “anticipatory pleasure”. “A lot of people believe that placing that order and waiting for it does feel good. This is why people look forward to dinner reservations, hair appointments and yes, receiving packages,” he says.

But it’s not the purchase itself that brings about this happiness. Experts say there’s something about the anticipation of waiting that is exciting for those in need of change in their lives. “It can be helpful to anticipate good things in the future, ’’says Ryan Howes. “Waiting for a parcel can serve as a temporary distraction (分心) from the dullness of your life because it gives you something new to wake up to and get excited about.”

However, anticipatory pleasure isn’t always a good thing. While waiting, many are worried about their items arriving on time, appearing broken, or simply not living up to expectations. Even when our package finally arrives, you’ll find that initial excitement has probably waned. Howes cautions that comfort shopping is only a temporary fix. It’s just a distraction from bigger problems, but it hasn’t done anything to change the bigger problems. It only helps you escape from them temporarily.

“Many people often seek external solutions, such as luxury purchases or alcohol, as a way of feeling better quickly. However, a healthier long-term curing mechanism is to look inward and appreciate your life with gratitude. Real pleasure comes from taking action rather than wait passively.” Howes says.

So the next time you feel the urge to order and track something online, chew over it.

1. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To inform a trend.B.To state an opinion.
C.To describe a phenomenon.D.To issue a warning.
2. What does the underlined word “waned” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Faded.B.Strengthened.C.Returned.D.Emerged.
3. What’s Howeses attitude to anticipatory pleasure?
A.Objective.B.Supportive.C.Doubtful.D.Unclear.
4. What is Howeses suggestion to readers?
A.Shopping online at will.
B.Seeking external stimulation.
C.Escaping from life occasionally.
D.Pursuing inner satisfaction actively.

5 . For people who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely making noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of today’s sound professionals are sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals in other fields to create new products based on the phenomenon we call sound.

Sound can be used as a weapon. Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief. The thief tries to escape. And the officer can’t let him get away. he pulls out a special device points it at the suspect, and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new weapon is called a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD, 远程定向声波发射器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.

For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let’s say you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼唱)a short commercial song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine a British invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the Silence Machine works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine on, point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.

Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same way spotlights(聚光灯) are used in the theater. A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; similarly, a “spotsound” creates a circle of sound in one targeted area. This can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with the various food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the atmosphere in which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and even at homes.

1. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRAD?
A.It causes temporary hearing lossB.It slows down a running man
C.It makes it easy to identify a suspectD.It keeps the suspect from hurting others
2. The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________.
A.silence the people around youB.remove the sound of commercials
C.block the incoming sound wavesD.stop unwanted sound from affecting you
3. What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share?
A.They travel in circlesB.They clear the atmosphere.
C.They can be transformed into energyD.They can be directed onto a specific area
4. Directed sound can be used for ________.
A.creative designs of restaurant menusB.ideal sound effects on the theater stage
C.different choices of music for businessesD.strict control over any suspicious customer

6 . Simple Tips to Increase Self-Confidence

Having confidence begins with having a mind full of confident thoughts. A mind is controlled by you, therefore believing only the things that will bring you things you desire. Almost anyone in the world can have confidence.     1    . It is a matter of following these easy steps.

Set goals

It’s a great idea to keep a “Goals Book” and every time something enters your mind you’d like to achieve, list it in the book. Soon you’ll see a pattern among all your goals.     2    , you begin to see simple changes in your life. There is no greater joy in life than to realize a goal.

    3

People usually can’t tell you how you should live your life when it’s just an expression of their own shortcomings. Don’ allow the shortcomings of others to affect your life negatively. No one but you knows your interests and ambitions. Work in the direction of your true loves and ignore everything that enters your mind going against your own desires.

Challenge your beliefs

4    . If they are not, cross them out. You may find it difficult to get rid of some of the deep-rooted beliefs, but with true desire you can abandon negative beliefs about yourself and you will realize enormous benefit in growing self-confidence and self-esteem.

Get started

Don’t expect changes right away and have patience in knowing that it takes time to be the person you wish to be. The wonderful thing about becoming a more self-confident person is that little benefits start taking shape almost immediately.     5     — as long as you continue to keep a positive outlook and display your confidence.

As you achieve confidence, and find little moments of confidence coming closer and closer, all the things you desire will come to you easier than you ever imagined.

7 . On a sunny afternoon, Andreas Fath climbed out of a river in Paducah. A small crowd was on hand to witness his setting a new world record. This man had just finished swimming the entire length of the Tennessee River—1,049 kilometers. And he did it in just 34 days!

As a chemist from Hochshule Furtwangen University, the 52-year-old man had taken on this swim for science. His primary goal was not to get his name into Guinness World Records. What really drove this swim was a desire to make people aware of the seriousness of water pollution.

Fath’s crew included his family. Martin Knoll, who helped organize Fath’s swim, also took par t. Knoll is an environmental scientist at the University of the South. He describes this swim as a vehicle for getting people interested in water quality and how we pollute water without realizing it.

It took Fath 34 days to swim the river’s length. Along the way, his crew took measurements of the water’s temperature and pH. They also recorded weather and the speed of the river’s currents (涌流). As for the Tennessee River, they collected daily water samples. A small plastic device attached to one leg of Fath’s wet suit sampled the chemical pollutants (污染物) through which he swam. Finally, Fath’s goal is to use such data to know what on earth results in water pollution. Then he wants to find ways to keep those chemicals out of the water.

Back in Germany, Fath and his students have finished examining their data. They plan to publish their findings soon. Identifying materials that hide in the river isn’t only important for the animals that live there. “It’s also a way to protect human health,” says Fath.

1. What was the main purpose of Andreas Fath’s long swim?
A.To make history.B.To set a new world record.
C.To bring attention to water pollution.D.To provide inspiration for scientific research.
2. What did Martin Knoll think of this long swim?
A.It was tiring.B.It was painful.C.It was interesting.D.It was meaningful.
3. Why did Andreas Fath and his crew collect data along the way?
A.To identify the sources of pollution.B.To learn a lot more about the currents.
C.To know chemicals’ effects on water.D.To get pollutants removed from the water.
4. What is Andreas Fath expected to do next?
A.Analyze the collected data.B.Get the findings published.
C.Study how to improve health.D.Identify materials in other rivers.

8 . Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year.     1     They migrate to find food, seek a partner, or in search of warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly.

Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico.     2

A team of scientists has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day.     3     These two pieces of information — the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky —allow the butterfly to determine the way to go. Eventually, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.

The solution to the mystery of the monarch’s amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble.     4     Sadly, human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is falling. In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plants that monarch caterpillars eat.

5     People have been recording its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to feed on. If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive and keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come.

A.They begin to return north in the spring.
B.This annual movement is called migration.
C.It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun.
D.However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
E.The most common type of migration is seasonal migration.
F.Its population has crashed by as much as 90 per cent in the last few years.
G.The research on the monarch’s behavior has however led to a greater awareness of this creature.

10 . Human beings use animals for a lot of purposes, including research. By studying animals, it is possible to learn information that cannot be learned in any other way. Animals are used in research when there is a need to find out what happens in the whole living body. There are four main reasons why animals are used in research.

Adding to scientific knowledge through basic biological research helps us understand how living things work, and use that understanding for the benefit(利益)of both humans and animals. The study of animals is an important part of the whole research process. The bodies of animals are like humans’ in the way that they perform many important functions(功能) such as breathing, movement, sight, and hearing. To treat disease, doctors and scientists must understand how the healthy body works.

Humans and animals share hundreds of illnesses, so animals can act as models for the study of human illness. For example, rabbits suffer form emphysema, a lung problem that makes it hard to catch their breath. Dogs suffer from cancer, bleeding disorders and so on. Cats suffer from some of the same vision loss as humans. From such models we learn how diseases affect the body and more.]

Once researchers learn more about a particular disease, animals are used to develop and test the treatments. For example, medicines for Parkinson’s disease have been developed by using animal models with Parkinson’s-like symptoms(症状). Models such as these are an important part of using biological research to solve real medical problems.

New medicines need testing because researchers must test both the beneficial and the harmful effects of a medicine on a living body. A medicine must be tested in a suitable animal model before clinical trials(临床试验) in humans can take place.

1. According to Paragraph 2, why are animals used in research?
A.They may be healthier than humans.
B.Their bodies are simpler than humans’.
C.They may have the same diseases as humans.
D.Their bodies are like humans’ in many functions.
2. How does the author support his statement in Paragraph 3?
A.By listing figures.
B.By giving examples.
C.By comparing humans with animals.
D.By showing some research finding.
3. The author mentions Parkinson’s disease to ________.
A.introduce a new discovery of medicine
B.prove that animals have the same disease
C.explain how to use animals for testing new medicines
D.gather more information about Parkinson’s symptoms
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Tests in animals should be carried out legally.
B.Not all new medicines can be tested in animals.
C.New medicines must be first tested in animal models.
D.Not all medicines have both beneficial and harmful effects.
