1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My parents were always against me owning my own pet, afraid of the mess it would make or that I would quickly lose interest in taking care of it, but we made a compromise: I could volunteer at a local pet shelter on the weekends to test my sense of responsibility and dedication. That was how I first came to volunteer at the Avondale pet shelter and—more importantly—where I met my future best friend, Chocolate.

One hot August afternoon, my boss Charlie told me that they were bringing in a young black Labrador Retriever and that I’d be its primary caretaker. An hour after our conversation and in came Chocolate—a beautiful dog with shining brown fur and amazing blue eyes. At about 3 months old, I expected him to be a lot more energetic and playful, but he immediately backed and lay down at the back of his pen (围栏).

I asked Charlie what was the matter with him. He replied that Chocolate had a genetic problem which caused him to be born with a short tail, leading potential owners to think there was something wrong with him; so the breeder felt that they had no choice but to give up the puppy to the shelter.

He was overlooked and underappreciated. I felt very angry at the thought that an otherwise healthy dog could be thrown away so easily. At the same time, I felt a deep sympathy for this dog who had been cheated out of the love and attention he deserved. It was at this moment that I resolved to give Chocolate as much love and attention as I could while working as a volunteer.

Although Chocolate was reluctant and shy at first. eventually through enough treats and play he slowly came around and warmed up to me. Soon enough, whenever I came around his pen to let him out for his turn of walks and play, Chocolate was always excited and jumping with joy.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jenny always admired powerful and attractive marathon runners and dreamed that one day she could also run a marathon.

To make it, one day, she began to seriously prepare. At first, she only set the small goal of running one kilometer each morning. However, she still found it tiring and soon gave up running. As days went on, her weight gradually increased. Upset about her health, she finally decided to lose weight by doing exercise. She began running again.

As usual, in the following days, her big problem with exercising was always how to stay motivated. She tried to find guidance from running experts and books. And everything she read indicated that she’d better pair up with a running partner. She followed the advice, but human exercise companions always let her down. Her last exercise companion quit with excuses like, “It’s my turn to do the dishes” at six o’clock in the morning! She hated to admit it, but she had made similar excuses to others and disappointed them in similar ways.

Then Brucie appeared in Jenny’s life, a birthday gift from her husband, John. John couldn’t work out with Jenny because he had a bad back. So that job was left to Brucie, a yellow dog. Brucie was quite energetic, which made him destined(注定的) to be a running partner.

In the beginning, Brucie and Jenny ran only fifty paces at a time, each set mixed with one hundred paces of walking. “I don’t look foolish starting this way,” thought Jenny, “because Brucie’s bones are too young to make him run much harder.” She was right, and Brucie’s early limitations gave her time to start slowly without feeling awkward.

After about nine months, though, Brucie was old enough to run several miles a day and Jenny was fit enough to keep up. From spring to autumn, they logged the miles together every day. However, as winter approached and the weather got colder, maintaining a daily running routine required lots of dedication and determination. And Jenny started to think the dog would be like her previous human partners and that she couldn’t count on the little dog for help with motivation.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My best friend, Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment complex in a lovely small town. Cocoa is a ten-year-old poodle(卷毛狗) and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as senior citizens.

Years ago, I promised myself that when I retired I would get a chocolate poodle to share my golden years. From the very beginning, Cocoa has always been exceptionally well-behaved. I never have to tell him anything more than once. He is extremely neat—when taking toys from his box to play, he always puts them back when he is finished. I have been accused of being obsessively neat, and sometimes I wonder if he mimics me or if he was born that way, too.

He is a wonderful companion. When I throw a ball for him, he picks it up in his mouth and gives it back to me. He does many amusing things that make me laugh, and when that happens, he is so delighted that he just keeps it up. I enjoy his company very much.

But almost two years ago, Cocoa did something that challenged comprehension. Was it a miracle or a coincidence? It is certainly a mystery.

One afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him when he started pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest. He had never done anything like this before, and I told him, “No.” Usually, one “no” is sufficient, but not that day. He stopped briefly, then suddenly ran toward me from the other side of the room, throwing his entire weight—eighteen pounds—at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I yelled in pain. It hurt more than I thought it would have.

Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿瘤). I went to the doctors, and after X-rays, tests and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.

In a remote and small mountain town, there lived a young woman named Lily. She was known for her kind heart and gentle nature. The townsfolk adored her very much and often sought her out for advice or a listening ear. Lily always showed her best passion in helping them, which made people in the town think highly of her.

One sunny afternoon, as Lily was walking through the town square, she noticed a small, shabby-looking man sitting alone on a park bench. His seemingly decent clothes were worn out, and his face bore the marks of a hard life, appearing helpless and being in low spirits. Feeling obliged to help, Lily approached him with a warm smile.

“Hello there, sir,” she greeted kindly. “Is there anything I can do for you?”

The man looked up, surprise flickering (闪烁) in his weary eyes. “I...I’ve lost my way,” he replied hesitantly. “I don’t have a home. I haven’t had anything to eat for several days, and I have no idea who I can turn to for help.”

Upon knowing his hardships, Lily decided to offer him some food and a place to stay. She introduced him to her family, who welcomed him with open arms and invited him to have dinner and stay with them. The man, who introduced himself as Samuel, began to regain his strength after gracefully filing himself with the delicious food provided by the warmhearted family. He expressed his sincere gratitude to them for the food and accommodation.

Months passed, and Samuel settled into a routine and became part of their household. He became skilled at various tasks and his genuine gratitude endeared him to everyone. He shared stories of his past adventures, in which he even had a narrow escape, and the family were surprised at his experience and admired his courage as well as wisdom.

One evening, as Lily and Samuels at on the porch, watching the sunset behind the hills, Samuel turned to her with a glimmer in his eye. “Lily,” he said softly, “I have a secret to share with you.”

My name is Fauna, but Mom and Dad sometimes call me Magpie, since I talk a lot. They call me “animal magnet,” too; because animals like me. I don’t mind at all because I like them, too. In fact, what I really, really want is a pet of my own. My dad has a pet fish, and I like it a lot — but I would still like a pet that’s all mine.

“Please? I asked my parents.“Pretty please, with cherries and chocolate and whipped cream on top?”

“We’ll see!”

“I’ll walk it and feed it and brush it.... well, unless it has scales or something. Then I’ll polish them real nice.”

“We’ll see.”

Finally, though, “we’ll see” was upgraded to “soon.”

“Let’s do some research,” said Dad, “and see what kind of pet is best for you.”

“And keep your eyes peeled,” said Mom. “You never know when an opportunity will come along.”

One did come along.

I was on my way home from school when I saw a unicorn (独角兽) standing in back of Baker Trembly’s shop. He was nibbling stale biscuits out of the trash can. I thought he might be a wild unicorn come into town, but he trotted (小跑) right up to me when I held out the apple I had in my backpack, left over from lunch.

“It followed me home!” I told my parents, after I managed to lead the unicorn to our front gate. “Can I keep it?”

“I hope you were careful,” said my dad with a frown. “Unicorns can be dangerous.”

“Not this one! He’s very sweet. And he’s just what I want!. I can keep him. in the garden.”

“He does look sweet,” said my mom. “Let’s check his tags (标牌).”

It was a sun-kissed spring afternoon along the beautiful Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, a 51-year-old former firefighter, was enjoying a rare moment with his 13-year-old daughter, Ava. The two of them were heading home across the Route 90 bridge, over the waters of Assawoman Bay.

However, the peace of their drive was suddenly disturbed by the noise of tires and a horrible crash just ahead of them. A black truck was out of control, running into a concrete barrier, and finally coming to rest over the bridge’s railing(栏杆).

In that heart-stopping moment, Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, narrowly avoiding a crash with the truck ahead. But his heart sank as he saw a red car sliding backward towards him. He turned left, but too late——the car ultimately crashed into the trunk of his car.

Bauer stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. Thankfully, Ava emerged from the chaos, but otherwise unhurt. Bauer, however, couldn’t stand by. Rushing to the red car, he checked on its driver. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too shocked to speak.

Then, suddenly, a scream of “HELP” cut through the air, coming from the overturned truck. As the truck driver climbed out and pointed toward the water, Bauer raced to his side. In the shallow bay waters below, he spotted a car seat and a terrified two-year-old girl, dressed in a pink dress.

Without hesitation, Bauer instructed Ava to call the ambulance as he removed his shoes. He knew the situation was urgent, and he had to act swiftly to save the baby. He climbed onto the bridge’s railing, preparing to make a jump of faith into the water. He was not sure about his chances jumping from this height into such shallow water. And were there rocks this close to the concrete pillar(柱子) of the bridge?

7 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Our neighbor, Mrs. Moore is an old artist, who lives alone with her cat Taffy. Her husband passed away years ago and her children work in other cities. Mrs. Moore always wears a serious look but in fact she is a very nice neighbor. She does three things every day-petting Taffy, painting and baking, among which baking is the part I like. Whenever the mouth-watering smell gets over the fence, I could expect a paper bag containing delicious cookies to be passed over the fence and shared by my sister Jennifer and me. To return this favor, my dad would mow the lawn (修剪草坪) for Mrs. Moore and help repair the water pipes.

Last year, Dad put his idea of building a tree house for us in our back yard into action. Dad shot from the hip (干事利落) and got everything in place within two weeks. It was a yellow tree house with red roof, which made a great place. for Jennifer and me to get out of the sight of Mom and Dad to have fun and talk about our girlish matters. We couldn’t wait to get in only to find Taffy had taken occupation of it and messed up the inside. We ourselves were unwilling to talk about such a problem to our nice neighbor, but we had no other choice. Dad was the one we sent to Mrs. Moore’s house for a friendly talk about the issue.

After the talk, Dad took Mrs. Moore on an inspection of the tree house, at which she was extremely astonished, saying she had never expected Taffy could be so fascinated with it. She promised to take care of the problem but to our disappointment, the cat could still find ways to climb over the fence and get into the tree house. After a thousand apologies to us, Mrs. Moore gave the problem a careful consideration and came up to a big decision: In view of Taffy’s obsession (痴迷) with a tree house, why not build one specially for him?

Every Sunday, June, a six-year-old girl, tied her sports shoes and walked to Grandpa’s house. Grandpa lived around the block(街区), and June was allowed to walk there by herself. Grandpa often told her stories. They also ate ice cream together while they talked. Sunday was June’s favorite day.

This Sunday, June got dressed. She put on one sports shoe, but she could not find the other shoe. “Mommy, where’s my shoe?”

“I’m sure it’s in your room. Look carefully until you find it. You can’t go until you have both shoes on,” June’s mother said.

June sat on her bed and looked around. Her room was quite messy. There were clothes on the floor and papers on the desk. She wasn’t sure where to start.

Then June remembered a story Grandpa told her. When he was little, he lost a coin that he planned to use to buy his mother a candy. He walked back over every place he had been to that day until he found it. He had to go in order so he wouldn’t miss anything.

June stood up. “I’ll start in the corner and go around the room in order,” she thought. “That way I won’t miss anything.”

Sam took a part-time job in a factory during his summer holiday. Unluckily, on his third day of work, he accidentally damaged a costly machine. Sam felt scared when he realized it was difficult for his family to pay for the damage. After hesitating (犹豫) for a moment, he decided to run away from the factory and go back home. With a heavy heart, he rode his bike and finally managed to leave the factory.

“If only I hadn’t broken the machine. I really enjoy working in the factory. All the people there are kind to me,” he thought sadly as he was riding back. However, luck was not on Sam’s side that day. His bike suddenly had a flat tire (爆胎). Feeling depressed, Sam stood by the side of the road. He started to regret choosing to run away. And he was worried that if his parents knew he had broken the machine and chosen to escape, they would be angry with him.

Suddenly, someone called out to him, “Sam, why are you standing here?” It was Uncle Tim, who happened to be passing by on his way home. Sam was shocked to see him. “Uncle Tim, I want to go home but my bike has a flat tire,” Sam answered nervously.

Uncle Tim suggested that he and Sam go to the town and have the bike repaired. Sam was thankful to Uncle Tim for his help. When they walked towards the town, pushing the bike, Uncle Tim found Sam was nervous and anxious. He asked Sam to relax and told him it was an easy task to repair the bike.

Later, Sam took a deep breath and began to tell the truth to Uncle Tim. “It isn’t because of the broken bike. I... I made a mistake in the factory. I broke a machine. Worrying that I would be punished and have to compensate (赔偿) for the damage, I ran away from the factory,” Sam said sadly.

Paragraph 1:

After hearing Sam’s explanation, Uncle Tim stopped, looking at Sam with kindness in his eyes.
