At the end of the sixth Wednesday of the fourth marking period, as the sisters unfolded the printed report cards, their smiles turned to tears: Lenna was getting a “D” in science and Elsa was getting a “C” in gym class.

Lenna and Elsa came home at the same time and were surprised to find one another disappointed. As they argued with one another about who had suffered the greater misfortune, they realized that the other’s problem sounded easy to solve. Elsa barked, “Your problem isn’t even a problem. I could pass that test easily and 1 can show you how to as well.”Lenna retorted(反驳), “Well, all you need to do to get an ‘A’ is to shorten your mile time to five or ten minutes. Two weeks of training with me and the coach will try to have you on the track team.” The girls exchanged glances and came to a quick agreement.

After breakfast, we left the warm and safe house and headed out into the dark, snowy morning, walking through deep snow. When we climbed over a mountain and crossed frozen streams, my grandfather told me to be mindful of where we had been and where we were headed. I tried to keep track of our route, but later had no idea.

About mid-afternoon, we made our way down the side of a new mountain to the stream bed below. My grandfather told me to head to the top of the next mountain, walk along the ridge (山脊) for a few hundred feet, and then come back down. If there were any deer on that part of the mountain, I would need to threaten them down to the bottom where my grandfather waited. So, off I went with a gun.

It took me 20 minutes to climb to the top. I walked along the ridge and then headed back down. I didn’t realize I had crossed over the top and had started back down the other side of the mountain. I headed in the wrong direction. After walking for 45 minutes, I realized I was lost in the woods. I was shocked.

After finally calming myself, I sat down and worked out a plan. I would first fire the gun and then start a fire, hoping my grandfather would know where I was by the sounds and smoke.


I looked at my watch. It was 4: 00. The sun would set down soon.

One afternoon, the mother was near the door reading for Thomas, while the boy was relaxing on the sofa in the living room, listening. Suddenly, Thomas heard a strange loud sound coming from the porch (走廊).

“It’s just... my book fell!” Beth said. But Thomas could tell she was struggling to breathe. It seemed that something was stuck in her throat.

Normally, Thomas’ wheelchair would be right by the sofa, and he could easily roll towards his mother. But earlier that afternoon, while Thomas was asleep, Beth pushed the wheelchair into the yard to let it get some sunshine.

Beth tried to get up for her inhaler put on a shelf inside the room, but she lost her balance and fell onto the floor. When Beth wasn’t able to respond to Thomas’ calling out her name, Thomas realized this was an emergency.

He looked at his mother’s inhaler. It could help save her life, but it was on that shelf seven meters away from him. “I must go there to get it,” he said to himself. Despite knowing his legs probably wouldn’t listen to him, he was determined.

I knew a lot of people at our local airfield, and many were taking commercial (商业的) flying exams — some with a goal of working as commercial pilots, others wanting to be instructors. I had an idea — I could become a helicopter instructor. That way, I could fly for free, and even get paid for it.

Then I told my friends my thought, but I didn’t expect some of the reactions I got. My friends couldn’t believe that I really meant to do that. “Oh, don’t be silly, Helen. You can’t possibly be a helicopter instructor,” one of my friends said. After all, I was well over forty, which is not the usual time to begin a new career. But I chose to stick to my idea.

She asked me to sit, pulled up her chair next to mine and gently asked, “Tell me about your routine, right from the time you wake up in the morning.” I wasn’t quite sure why she wanted to know, but I told her about my morning job in a few words. She asked me, “How many miles do you walk every day?” I replied, “A little more than 11 kilometres.” My reply shocked her.

Henry decided to take the woman to her town, but he remembered that his wife would be upset with him if he missed his daughter’s birthday party. He called his wife to explain things. As he predicted, she said nothing, ending up the call. That made him uneasy and almost turn back to his car. But he knew that he could not leave the woman helpless. “I’d want someone to care for my wife or daughter if they ended up in such a tough situation,” he said to himself.

“I think first grade has changed a lot from when we were first graders,” I told Maneya. Maneya smiled at me, and secretly I thought she was thanking her lucky stars that she was working with fourth graders. Her students completed their exercises without complaining. It sounded like a great classroom to spend time in.

Twice a week, I worked with my group. Most days I returned to my own campus really tired. Once, my teacher asked me why I was wearing a paper crown. I had completely forgotten that I had been filling in for Cameron. who had decided he no longer wanted to be the king in the group’s rehearsal (排练) of their performance “King for a Day”.

Maneya comforted me as I told story after story about first grade. But as the weeks went on, I began to notice I wasn’t the one who was complaining anymore. I had figured out how things worked in the first grade, and Maneya was the one who started to complain. Her experiences with fourth graders began to dull in comparison with my adventures with the six year olds.

The time was up, and Mr. Crane began collecting the answer sheets. Andy quickly stuffed his blank test into the pile, wanting to forget about it. Unfortunately, his brain seemed to remember only the things it should forget. During lunch, Andy stared at a map, frustrated that he had handed in a blank sheet of paper.

Andy’s friend Aaron shrugged. “You only need a 70 to pass.”

“Yeah, well it’s hard to get a 70 when you hand in a blank sheet of paper,” Andy mumbled, frowning.

Aaron popped a grape into his mouth. “Well, Mr. Crane will let you retake (补考) it tomorrow.”

Andy was the only one standing at Mr. Crane’s desk after school. He apologized quickly, head drooping. But instead of scolding him, Mr. Crane patted his shoulder, saying, “I think you are trying, but you might learn better by being active. Just practice more!”

The coach asked him if he wanted to sit on the bench with the team. “No,” John said. “I want to play.” Of course his team was excited to have him. But because John wasn't on the pre-game roster(候选名单), putting him in the game at that point would result in a technical foul(犯规)and two free throws for the opposing team.

However, John's coach agreed with that. He could see that this was the teenager's way of coping with his loss. He thought the points didn't matter. The opposing team understood the situation and told the referees to let John play and forget the technical foul. The referees argued that a rule is a rule, and the free throws would have to be taken before the game could proceed. For possibly the first time in basketball history, referees had to force a team to accept and take the technical free throws.
