1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1963, at age 65, my grandfather, Erwin, decided to start a crazy project: He wanted to build a new house. He wasn’t quite sure what to do with the old house. It seemed a waste to destroy it, but something had to give, since it sat where the new house would be. At last, he hired a powerful vehicle to push the old house far out into a forest.

After my grandfather passed away, I purchased a near farm. When we first moved in, we asked friends to a party. They took one look at the old house and all suggested pulling it down. I agreed. Days later, I was prepared to carry out the project. But I considered it wise to check out the old house first, just in case something of value had been left behind.

My two young sons followed, and we walked through the tall grass in the field where the old house sat. Time had caused a lot of damage to it. The front porch (门廊) had fallen down, most of the windows were gone, and the siding was falling off. The kids were amazed that nine people once occupied the tiny structure, and that they did so without running water or electricity.   We entered through an open window.

I felt as though I had discovered a time capsule (胶囊) unexpectedly. Here lay various witnesses to my grandparents’ lives. A broken chair, some old clothes, large bags used for grain, a cookstove and a cardboard box stuffed with canceled checks and greeting cards. But a pile of papers on the floor drew my eye. An envelope, yellowed with age, lay on top. A blue stamp on the envelope read “Passed by Naval Censor”. I knew it was from my father. He had served in the navy and written home whenever he could. My grandmother saved all of his letters. Father passed away due to a massive heart attack two years ago. The entire family was sad about his passing, none more than me. I’ve been missing him badly.

A Perfect Party

One day, my friend Mary and I were enjoying our free time in my living room. While looking through a magazine, Mary said, “This looks fun.” She held up a photo of a crowd of happy people and a table covered with colorful decorations and plates of delicious-looking food. The headline on the next page read “Celebrate Your Weekend with a Perfect Potluck Party.”

“We should do that!” I said excitedly. “Let’s invite our friends to a potluck party in my yard!”

“Good idea,” she replied.

“There’s just one problem,” I said.

“That it’s going to be too much fun?” Mary joked.

I laughed. “Not exactly. I need to ask permission (许可), but my mom might not be as excited about throwing a party as we are. My parents have been really busy with their work recently.”

When my mom got home from work, I cautiously showed her the magazine article and told her our idea, waiting for her reply. After what seemed like a century, my mom said, “That looks like fun, but... I’m afraid I won’t have time to help you plan it. Do you think you can do it on your own?”

At her words, I asked ” So, mom, will you permit us to do so if we can arrange the party well?” My mom nodded with a smile. Unable to contain my joy and excitement, I threw myself into her arms, murmuring, “Thank you, dear mum.”

Then I continued. “I promise Mary and I will do every last bit of planning and cleaning and everything!”

“Everything? What about food?” my mom asked.

“It’ll be a potluck party,” I explained. “So everyone will bring something to share out among the guests!”

She nodded. “OK. If you want to make sure you have the right balance of food at a potluck, you should definitely talk to the guests ahead of time about what they’re bringing. Besides, I suppose you could draw up a guest list, make invitations in advance and decorate the yard carefully.”

“That’s great!” I said, “It’ll be a perfect potluck party. You’ll see!”

Almost every kid has the experience of losing a treasured belonging. So does 8-year-old Maya Zrihen. But what she did afterwards really sets her apart.

Maya has been collecting Junior Ranger badges (小护林员徽章) on family trips to national parks. “National parks are very beautiful, and I want to protect them, so that's why I'm a Junior Ranger,” she said.

When the family first learned about the Junior Ranger program, they decided to take full advantage of it. Maya's mother believed that there are things children cannot learn from a textbook, but they can learn hands-on in the parks. So on holidays or at weekends, the family took Maya to different parks to complete various educational activities and earned badges. “In Washington, D.C., I visited all the monuments that we can get badges from,” Maya said proudly to others.

In order to make Maya look like a real ranger, her mother purchased a hat for her to wear. Maya displays the badges she got on the hat while visiting parks. She is very proud of being part of this program. She also takes it upon herself to educate her friends about what she is learning in the parks and promises to care for them.

Last month, Maya and her family went to Dry Tortugas, a heavily visited national park in Florida. Maya was very excited to go there because it was the park she had always dreamed of visiting. In the park Maya picked up litter, planted trees and put up posters to call on visitors to protect wild animals. At the end of the day, Maya finished all the tasks and got a fancy badge from a park ranger. She considered this badge her favorite one so she put it on the most outstanding place of the hat. Then Maya and other junior rangers played happily in the woods of the park for a while.

Although it’s been almost two years now, I can still remember that day as if it were yesterday. We were all glued in front of the television, when Dad came rushing into the house after work to tell us that he had just bought a new boat. He promised us that the following week he’d take us all on a fishing trip. We were all very excited and happy at the prospect of it.

The much-awaited day finally came. After we packed everything onto the boat, Dad started the engine and steered it slowly out of the harbour. We headed out until we were a good distance from the shore. Then, when we found what seemed like a good spot for fishing, Dad stopped the engine.

The sky was crystal clear and the sea was as calm as a sheet of glass. We spent a good couple of hours bathing in the sun, fishing rods in hands, without a care in the world. It was fantastic just being there, staring out at the beautiful blue sea. We caught a good number of fish.

We must have lost track of time, chatting and laughing, because the next thing I remembered was being put into a darkness which was so thick that one could almost cut it with a knife. Looking around, it was all pitch-black. Then, out of nowhere, a big wave came crushing into the boat, nearly overturning us all overboard. If that wasn’t bad enough, we could hear the rumbling (隆隆声) of thunder in the distance—it was unbelievable how the weather had changed so quickly before our very own eyes. The storm was rolling up on us fast and it wasn’t long before the rain started to come down in showers. The rain was so dense and heavy that we could barely breathe.

Green Thumb

All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”

Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.

“Did you plant something there?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.”

“What? But, Laynie—”

I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh…I never grew one before.”

Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.

A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their pointy little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house.

Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.

One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad?” I couldn’t speak.

“Not long, I bet!” said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house.

Carl moved to Arizona in December. He came from the round, green mountains of Vermont to the Sonoran Desert where the mountains were sharp, brown, and wrinkled. Carl was homesick.

Carl’s new home was the town of Silverbell. Silverbell sat near a river with the same name. But there was not a drop of water in this river.

Carl hadn’t made any real friends yet. He always walked home from school alone. One day, though, he heard a lonely melody (旋律) floating in the wind. It sounded wonderful-and fitted Carl’s mood just right. He followed the music to the schoolyard and found Tadio, the kid who always sat by himself in the lunchroom. He sat on the steps playing a wooden flute (长笛).

“That song is wonderful!” Carl said.

“Thank you,” Tadio said with a bright, sunny smile.

“I’m Carl. I play, too.” He took out bis own silver flute.

“Ah, my name is Tadio. Let’s play together.”

Carl joined Tadio. They played Ode to Joy, a piece that they both knew by heart. The two got along so well that Carl felt comfortable telling Tadio about his homesickness.

“It just doesn’t feel like winter around here,” Carl said. “I don’t think it ever will. It’s too hot.”

Tadio said, “It feels like winter to me, but I’ve lived in Silverbell my whole life.”

“So, why is it called Silverbell anyway?” asked Carl.

“Because of the canyon (峡谷). My grandfather said at special times, one could hear her ring like a silver bell…for example when the rain poured down,” Tadio said.

Then Carl complained about Principal Ramire’s request for his flute solo at tomorrow’s winter concert.

“Ah, you are shy, but you play very well. Let’s meet tomorrow before the concert to practice. Maybe that will help ease your fear. I know a spot beside the canyon where I often go to play. Sometimes, her echo (回音) sounds like she’s singing with me,” Tadio laughed.

The next day was sunny and warm. After school, the two boys spread out a blanket beside Silverbell Canyon and played, stopping only when they heard the sound of distant thunder. The rain followed.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had a trip to New Mexico last year, a trip I still remember very well to this day. I went to a place called Philmont and attended a summer camp. There were thirteen people including me. The entire 10-day hike we took through those mountains went well, except for the second day, because of the terrible weather.

It had been a nice sunny day up until we were halfway to the camp we were staying at that night. Then without a word it started raining gently. There was nothing too bad and certainly nothing we couldn’t handle. We put our raincoats on and continued on our way. It stayed raining slightly for a while, so I decided it would be a good idea to say, “Well, it can’t be much worse than this, right?” And in less than five seconds the thunder crashed around us. It almost sounded like a laugh, as if it was laughing at us. Then the rain started to come down harder, and then, the hail (冰雹) came.

Getting hit with balls of ice in the middle of the New Mexico mountains was not something I had ever thought would happen to us, but here we were. All thirteen of us were wishing at that moment that we could go home. But we quickly abandoned the idea. It was freezing, and my feet felt like they might fall off. Wet, cold, and carrying 40 pounds on our backs, we hiked on.

But soon enough we got lost for about a mile because of a mistake that our “Navi-guesser” made on getting us to our destination. At the same time, one of our boys got a minor case of hypothermia (低温症). We decided to stop for a while, unpacking our tents to get into a nice warm sleeping bag. I don’t know if you know this, but unpacking camping gear (装备) in the rain was not very fun, especially setting up a tent.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a beautiful May morning. As usual, I started my day by sitting outside breathing the fresh air as I read my book and drank my coffee. Afterwards, there were two things I was determined to do. First, make sure my husband got our small Christmas trees down from the attic(阁楼) and, second, take several bags of clothes, blankets and comforters to the donation center. I had been faithful in doing that every year, but for whatever reason, I had delayed this year and the bags were now piling up and overflowing.

After reading for a while, I went into the bedroom to ask my husband to bring the trees down. He was asleep so I figured I’d surprise him and get them down by myself.

I went to the garage to access the attic storage and moved our tall metal ladder into place. I had to move the bags of clothing and blankets out of the way, determined once again to get those to the donation center.

I climbed the ladder, and two steps from the top I was able to reach up and push open the attic door. Then, with my feet on the very last step and part of my upper body in the attic, I saw my trees. I awkwardly raised my leg to climb onto the attic floor. Looking down, and then looking up again, I decided that this was actually too much for me. I should wait for my husband to get them.

As I stepped down, my foot missed the shaky ladder’s step. With one foot swinging and the other on the top step, I grabbed(抓住) the attic floorboard and called my husband. Unfortunately, he couldn’t hear me. As I went to take another step down, the ladder suddenly came out from under me, loudly crashing onto the concrete(混凝土的) garage floor, leaving me hanging from the attic with sweaty hands. In that second, which seemed like a century, I prayed and then called my husband.
