The Great Field Day

The sun was shining brightly on the day of the big school field day. All the kids from different schools gathered for a day of fun games and activities. As I looked around, I noticed Molly, a small girl standing all by herself on the side of the field.

Feeling curious, I walked up to Molly and asked why she wasn’t playing with the other kids. She usually had a big smile, but today she looked a bit sad. After a little pause, she told me she decided not to join in. I wondered why, as she had been excited about this day for a long time.

Feeling a bit worried, I had a chat with the person in charge and found out that Molly was worried about not being as fast or strong as the other kids. The person in charge thought it was best to let Molly choose whether to play or not.

Trying to cheer her up, I told Molly that she had her own-special qualities, and if she wanted to play, what others thought didn’t matter. Molly, still unsure, decided to give it a shot and joined me, looking a bit shy. I whispered, “It’s your choice. Don’t let what others think stop you. Your preparation is what counts the most.” Molly took a deep breath and turned to me with watery eyes.

2 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I am Denise Clarice, the only one in my class who does not have a pet. No dog waits for me at the bus stop. No cat sits beside me while I read. But I don’t feel sorry. Why?

The rule about no pets at our house is not because my parents are mean. Mom and Dad are very nice, and I know they like dogs because they always stop to pet Maurice, the dog who lives next door.

The rule is not because I am too young to have pets, because I am 11 years old. Besides, I am very responsible. I always return library books on time and I do my homework every day, even when I would rather play in the grass. The rule about no pets is because of Kevin. He is my little brother and he has allergies (过敏). Pets make him sneeze (打喷嚏).

One day when I was walking home from school, feeling sad because there is no dog waiting at home for me, I heard a soft little sound from behind a tree. I stopped and listened. There it was. I heard the sound again.

I walked quietly up. A tiny ball of gray fur looked up at me and said, “Meow.” Before I knew it, I was holding the cat. Again, before I knew it, I was walking toward home, holding the cat in my arms. She must be lost. Finders keepers, I told myself.

Arriving home, I took the cat directly to my room. We played with a ball, and she jumped high to catch the ball. I made a comfortable little bed for her in a box with an old towel (毛巾) and gave her milk to drink. Then my mother called me to dinner.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“BANG!” the door was shut loudly. It was just standing there, with my father standing on one side, and I on the other side.

We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” my father said angrily. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.

I didn’t know whether it was because I had grown up or because my dad was getting old. He always put his opinions on me. We were just like two people in two different worlds. It felt like there was an iron door between us that could never be opened.

My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets. When I finally reached my house, I saw that the light was still on.

All the lights were off except living room’s.

Officer Julian and Christina parked in front of the bus station and saw that an ambulance (救护车) had arrived before them. There was a call about an old woman lying on the ground. They came to check things out.

They exited their car and saw a doctor tending to the old woman, who was luckily conscious (有意识) and talking.

“Mrs. Logan?” Christina and Julian questioned with wide eyes. They both realized they knew the old woman.

The old woman looked up and finally recognized them. “Julian! Christina! I haven’t-seen you since you graduated from high school. What are you doing here?” she said breathlessly. “We were asked to come to check things after the call came through 911. Is everything alright? What are you doing in this bus station?” Christina placed her hands on the old woman’s shoulders.

Years ago, Mrs. Logan was their math teacher. She lived alone in Minnesota after her husband died. “I was hoping to go to Florida to see my son Peter. I haven’t heard from him for months. There are lots of hurricanes (飓风) in Florida. I need to make sure he’s safe,” Mrs. Logan explained.

Considering the doctor’s advice against Mrs. Logan travelling alone by bus especially as far as Florida, Julian softly suggested she go home and rest. However, Mrs. Logan begged for their help in a weak voice. Moved by her, Julian and Christina decided to drive her to Florida themselves to help realize her wish.

Four days later, they finally reached Florida, only to find everywhere was in a mess. Obviously, a terrible hurricane had hit this area days before. They hurried to her son’s home. It was destroyed completely and Peter was nowhere to be found. Mrs. Logan broke down on Christina’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Logan.” Christina hugged the old woman close to her body protectively.

Once upon a time, there lived a young man who wished he could support himself. While exploring what business he would take on, he met a very well-traveled man. The man told the young man great tales of his travel, and then he talked about a country that had no onions.

Without any further thoughts, he bought onions, filled his cart and set his journey towards this wildly fantastic land without onions. Finally, after several days he arrived in the onion-less country. “I bring you a great gift from my country,” the young man proudly announced. “The plant is native to my place but new to yours. It has the unique ability to improve the flavor (滋味) of any food. It would be great if I could offer you this magic plant which you, in turn, introduce to your people.” The emperor was a little cautious about letting the strange plant in at first, but he later allowed the young man to prepare some foods using the onions.

The young man used all his skills to prepare the feast using the onions. All the empire’s ministers, the nobility and senior officials were invited to the dinner that night. After the young man did the initial tasting, the feast began. Then, everyone in the room started eating the food. It didn’t take long for the hall to get into a great noise of excitement. All praised the smell and the taste of the food. The emperor thanked the young man a lot, demanded all of the onions, and paid him its weight in gold.

On his journey back home, the young man met a trader. For hours that night, the young man told what he had seen in that faraway land, where gold was worth less than onions. He also told the trader that he learned that the country did not have garlic (大蒜). The trader was excited.

Callie was a high school student. Because of her parents’ business, her family moved from London to Los Angeles, where she grew up.

Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was very interested in various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.

On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door.

“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden, “she explained.” We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday. “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday. I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have had a good place to go.”

At school the next morning, Callie’s close friend Tamara was waiting for her by their classroom, who had a surprise for her. Tamara said, “My mom bought tickets to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the amusement park (游乐场) to reopen.

Callie sighed and worried over how to choose for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood (情绪) when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school?” her mother asked.

Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mom?” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also want to help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choice, and you need to make your own decision. But I know you will do what is best,” her mother answered.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At the center of the mall was the perfect Santa with a gentle manner and a real white beard. My six-year-old granddaughter, Leah, jumped from foot to foot as we waited in line for her turn to sit on his lap.

“I don’t know what to say,” Leah said, raising her neck around the kids in front of her.

“Sure you do.” her mother, Leanne, said. “It’s Santa. He’s already your friend. You’ll do just fine.”

“He’ll ask you what you want for Christmas.” I said. “And you just tell him.”

We’d gone over and over the toys she’d ask for. Her mother didn’t want surprises! Leah repeated the list. But a minute later, she inserted new toys she’d just spotted at the mall.

“I’ve got an idea,” said Leanne, digging into her purse as the line inched (缓慢移动) forward. “Let’s write down your requests so you won’t forget them.” I couldn’t help but laugh. Going to see Santa was such an important appointment for a six-year-old. No child should have any worries bigger than that. But the night before, on the news, I’d seen a village in the Middle East that had come under fire. Many of the wounded were children just like our Leah. Looking around the mall full of magical decorations and happy shoppers I felt safe, as safe as anyone could be. Everyone in the world should have that kind of security, especially at Christmas.

“Okay,” Leanne said. “Now you’ve got everything you want written down here. If you get nervous you can just give the note to Santa.”

Leah nodded and took the list. She read out loud, “A Chia Pet, Moon Sand and Aquadoodle.”

“Why don’t you add a fourth request, Leah,” I heard myself say. “Ask for peace on Earth.” My daughter looked a little surprised by my suggestion.

“What’s peace on Earth, Grandpa?” Leah asked.

“Peace on Earth means all the people in the world would get along. That’s the true meaning of Christmas.” Leah nodded seriously. “Yes,” she agreed.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.

One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.

Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”

The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. The school took part in the league matches every year. However, it never ended well. We were more of the audience, watching and cheering instead of sweating out in the fields.

Fortunately, the school held the tradition that the school’s old team was to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. For lack of resources, the old team bad no coach, and they didn’t even practice to prepare for the game.

I was assigned (指派) as the coach of the new team, which was why I was excited. I believed that we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn’t believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I tried to figure out the reason and what I should do next.

It didn’t take long before I came to realize that my team was depending on me. Without proper guidance or previous experience, my team was at a loss what to do. I had to change my attitude so that I could bring out the best in them about their ability and potential.

I would let my action do the talking. First, I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. I could see their spirits lifted, with their head held high in great confidence. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. Only when they regarded themselves as winners could they willingly invest time and energy.

This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations.
