As a stay-at-home mom for 26 years, KC just turned 50 and she wanted to seek a job. She was not just looking for something to do. Putting four kids through college had left her severe financial problems and getting a job was a must!

From childhood, all KC wanted to be was a mom. "That's all. I'm just a mom who stays at home with my children and creates a good and comfortable home for my family." She was not sure why that ambition(夙愿) was so strong for her. "My mom worked full-time, so I did not see her often. Maybe because I wished she had been at home with me," KC said. So after the birth of her first child, KC gave up her job and spent the next 26 years taking care of her children. But after such a long time, she wanted to find a job.

She realized the difficulty of the situation. When she sent a resume that had a 26-year gap, she knew it was lucky if she could get an interview, let alone an offer. Besides, her education was also one of the obstacles (障碍). The fact that she didn’t go to college was a disadvantage.

So after her own experiences, she advised others, "Get a college degree! You needn't change the thing about being a stay-at-home mom, but do something — no matter how small — to keep your skills up to date. There are so many choices these days that it will be easy to do while you're a full-time mom."

KC would still like to get a degree and then she discussed it with her husband. Her husband thought that she needed to go to a tutorial school. She agreed. KC wanted to keep up with current technology so she took classes to learn to use software.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My mom told me the story when I asked her about my hand. “The room was quiet, and you were quiet. I was waiting for you to cry. I asked if you were OK, but they were hesitant, the doctor and nurses. They said you were missing a hand." My mom told this to me with such complex(复杂的)feelings. My disability came as a surprise to my parents, but they took me home and treated me as any other child.

They knew I was an active child and took part in sports, music and everything a typical child would. They never let anything hold me back. That was their goal. However hard, they would help me. And with many kind people's help, I was able to receive prosthetics(义肢) that cost $1,000, at no cost.

Middle and high school brought about different challenges. Just like most girls, I struggled hard with self-respect for how I looked. I was not like other girls, and I was aware of that clearly. I lost my confidence as I questioned whether anyone would ever love me. Luckily, my worry was unnecessary.

My confidence was still shaking in my 20's as I became a mother. I had years to prepare everything, but I was also worried about the coming baby. Worse still, I felt my son would dislike me.

However, that all changed with one moment. It all happened when my son was around 6 years old. "She was born like that!" He responded loudly, standing protectively in front of me as I bent down to answer his little classmates' question.

It was a moment that lives on forever in my memory. My son freed me of questioning myself if I was a good enough mom for him. I was, I had always been. He knew it before I did. The pride in his voice showed me that I was just me.

A little exercise is better than none

Exercise is good for us. It reduces the risk of dying from all causes, including cancer and heart disease. This is according to the World Health Organisation. But many people who work on weekdays have little time for exercise.

So, they might try to do something to increase their heart rates over the weekend go for a long run, take a bike ride, hike in the mountains or do a strenuous chore around the house, such as raking leaves , shoveling snow or digging a garden.

We sometimes call people who exercise only on Saturdays and Sundays “weekend warriors (战士)”. But is it healthy to avoid exercise during the workweek and then try to fit it all in during the weekend?

A new study suggests that, yes, it is healthy: Even weekend warriors may reduce their risk of cancer and cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.

Australian researchers at the University of Sydney conducted the study. It took place over a nine-year period.

During that time, the researchers looked at the self-reported exercise habits and health examinations of more than 63,000 adults in England and Scotland. Then they connected that information to mortality—or, death—records.

The researchers found that people who exercised only one or two days a week improved their chances of living longer than people who did not exercise at all. Even those who are very overweight—or, obese—could extend their lives by exercising a couple of days per week. Exercises included playing sports and taking a brisk walk.

First, let’s look at cancer. When compared to those who did not exercise at all , weekend warriors had an 18 percent lower risk of dying from cancer.

As for cardiovascular disease, weekend warriors had a 40 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease than inactive people, or so-called “couch potatoes”. Couch potatoes are people who don’t exercise. They simply sit all day like potatoes.

In other words, their health improves even if they don’t meet the suggested weekly amount of physical activity. However, to be in the best health, Stamatakis says, more exercise is better.

The WHO suggests that the average adult get at least 150 minutes of moderate (中等的) to intense activity per week. For the best results, the organisation suggests 75 minutes per week of vigorous (高强度的) physical activity.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the   sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
