1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

To my mother, the four basic food groups are meat, milk, grain and coleslaw (凉拌菜丝)—pieces of raw cabbage, carrot, onion, etc. mixed with sauce. And she always thinks highly of her handmade coleslaw. In our house, the coleslaw always goes on the table in a bowl.

I love Mom's coleslaw, but there was a time I distinctly remember when it caused absolute panic within me.

Early in the first grade, I raced home from school with a collection of papers handed to me by my class teacher Mary. As I rushed through the front door, I immediately ran to the kitchen where Mom was making chicken noodle soup. Holding the papers, I begged, “Read them to me, Mom, please!”

Slowly she started reading aloud. I smiled with delight as she read to me what seemed an almost endless list of exciting adventures waiting for me in the coming year. And then, it happened.

“It's a tradition for a mother to bring a homemade treat for the class to share on her child's birthday,” she read. “It needn't be anything fancy, just something you enjoy making.” The words floated through the air in painfully slow motion. The phrase “just something you enjoy making” kept appearing inside my head.

Until my birthday in April, I lived in fear that Mom would arrive at school with a cart full of her coleslaw for everyone to share. I imagined the classmates laughing at me, “Who would bring coleslaw on his birthday? Oh, stupid Tom!”

When I left for school on the morning of my birthday, Mom was making cakes. I had relief and was glad she would bring the cakes. But then, I found there were a great many raw vegetables in the fridge. “Will you also make coleslaw for me, Mom?” I asked, shocked.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写词数应为150字左右。

My father never told me he loved me when I was a child. I always saw him as being a serious man who rarely had a smile. But my mom told me “I love you” everyday. So I really never thought about not hearing it from my dad. I never really thought about it much until I faced the reality of death.

On November 9th, 1990, I received word that my National Guard unit was going to the war zone. I had been in the Guard for 10 years and never dreamed that we would be activated for a war, even though I knew it was what we trained for. I went to my father and gave him the news. I could sense he was worried about me going but he said nothing, and eight days later I was gone.

On November 17th,1990, our military vehicles rolled out of rural Greenville, Michigan. The streets were filled with families and well-wishers to see us off. As we were close to the edge of town, I looked out the window of my truck and saw my wife, my children, and Mom and Dad. They were all waving and crying, except for my father. He just stood there, almost like a stone statue. He looked pretty old at that moment. I don’t know why, he just did.

I was gone for that Thanksgiving and missed our family’s dinner. A few days after Thanksgiving I was able to call my wife, and she told me something that has made me look at my father in a different way ever since. She told me that my father recited his usual Thanksgiving prayer. But this time he added one last sentence. As a tear ran down his cheek, he said, “Dear Lord, please watch over and guide my son, Rick, with your hand in his time of need as he serves his country, and bring him home to us safely.” At that point he burst into tears. I had never seen my father cry, and when I heard this, I guessed my father really did love me.

Eight months later, I returned home from the war.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was July 1971. I was taking a summer class in Black-American literature on the campus of SUNY. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class and he needed a volunteer to meet his guest in the hall of the administration building and ac company him here.

To my amazement, my right hand shot up as though it had a mind of its own. I never volunteered for anything. I was shy and uncomfortable meeting new people. Realizing I was absolutely the wrong person for this job, I pulled my hand down quickly, but it was too late. “Thank you, David,” Professor James said. “You’d better leave now. Hell be arriving any minute.” I reluctantly got out of my seat and headed for the classroom door. When I reached it, I stopped. I said, “If I don’t know who this person is, how will I recognize him? I’d hate to bring back the wrong guy.” Professor James laughed. He pulled me aside and whispered a name in my ear. “Alex Haley,” he said. “Really?” I said. I gave a thumbs-up to the class and left the room.

The hall was empty and Alex Haley was nowhere to be seen. My anxiety grew because I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of this famous gentleman by asking stupid questions, or worse, by falling unnaturally silent. As I paced back and forth across the polished floor, I realized why I instinctively (本能地) raised my hand to volunteer for this job. This man was what I wanted to be: a writer. He was living my dream. I could learn from him. But deep in my heart, I was worried about whether I had a gift.

It was then that Mr. Haley with a briefcase entered the building. He was a man in his forties, medium height, wearing a sports jacket over an open-collared dress shirt. After we introduced each other, I accompanied him to the classroom building. Across campus, I was struck by how approachable this man was.

Jenny and Lisa are close friends. They’re studying in high school now.

One day about half a year ago, Jenny found that Lisa was chatting on her cellphone. Jenny was surprised as she didn’t know Lisa had gone down town to buy a cellphone. So Jenny asked her, “When did you get your cellphone?”

“I bought it yesterday. Look! How lovely it looks!” said Lisa.

Jenny looked at the cellphone, which looked really lovely. Jenny wished she also could have such a cellphone.

That day, after Jenny came back home, she saw her father sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. Jenny approached him and said, “Dad, could I have a cellphone? Many of my classmates have their own cellphones now.”

“Of course, you can have one,” said Jenny’s father.

“Thank you, Dad,” Jenny said happily. Then she asked, “When shall we go down town to buy one?”

The father looked up hearing that. Then he said, “Oh, no, dear! I’m not going to buy you a cellphone. If you really want one, you should make money to buy one yourself.”

She told her father that she had decided to find a job to make money. “Good,” said her father. Jenny started to look for part-time work on the Internet. Lucky for her, some families in the young couple needed someone to look after their baby. Jenny called the families and she was offered the jobs.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Eli looked up at the sky. It was bright blue, his favorite color. As he lay on his back, the soft green grass brushed against his arms and legs. The cool wind kept him at the perfect temperature, and the weather was just right for playing outside. Every summer vacation, he and his family drove to the small city of Ithaca to visit his mother’s family.

Just as Eli was starting to fall asleep in the backyard, his stomach growled (饥肠辘辘). “Time for dinner” he thought. So he stood up and began to walk back to the house. Suddenly he noticed something move out of the corner of his eye. It was near the woods in the back yard. Then he heard some rustling (沙沙地响). So he went to check what it was. When he got closer, the object stopped moving. He walked over quietly until he could see something lying in the grass — it was a baby deer!

Even though Eli was standing very close to the animal, he found it strange that the baby deer didn’t try running away. Eli rushed into the house and told his mother what he had found. “Well, we should check if the deer is injured. If not, we shouldn’t do anything because its mother will come back and take care of it,” she told Eli. So the two of them walked to the baby animal. Eli’s mother walked very slowly and finally got close enough to the deer.

Eli watched his mother frow n as she examined the baby deer. She walked back to Eli. “I think its back le g is injured,” she said. “But we’ll wait for a few hours and see if the deer’s mother comes back for it. If we do anything now, we might scare it and hurt it more.” Eli wanted to help the baby, but he knew his mother was right. They went back into the house and had lunch. They both kept checking the clock.

“Don’t forget to study for the European history test on Friday,” Mrs. Beville announced to her students before the class was over.

Julie shut her book and sighed to herself: “Why couldn’t the test be on poetry?” Julie loved poetry and its rhythmic expression of feelings and ideas. Yes, poetry she could understand. But history? “What if I fail? I’ve never been good at memorizing anything for a test,” she thought.

That night, Julie sorted out her notes. She flipped open her textbook to the end of the first chapter, where she found a list of practice questions for the test. “Need some help?” asked her older brother, Joey, who poked his head into her bedroom to see what she was doing. Julie handed him her textbook and said: “Quiz me.” Joey took the book and read the first question. “In what year did England defeat the Spanish Armada?” Julie frowned and pursed her lips. Her left eye ticced   (抽筋).“Dates are the worst! Ask another one.”

Joey’s eyes traveled to the bottom of the page. “Who took the throne following the death of Queen Mary I?” “Oh! It’s on the tip of my tongue. It’s —it’s—I don’t know!” Julie shook her head. “Looks like you didn’t study,” Joey said. Julie grabbed her book back and glared at Joey. What did he know about her study habits? She could read a chapter a thousand times, but no matter what, getting her brain to hold on to information was like getting a rock to absorb sand.

The following day, she decided to use library time to study. She found a table in a quiet corner. With her textbook open in front of her, she tried to make sense of all the facts and dates. But it was useless. She dropped her head to the book and buried her face in the pages. “Impossible!”

“Psst, Julie!” Julie heard someone calling her and looked up. Maria from her class was seated at a nearby table.

My brother Joe and I no longer live in the same state, but I make sure to give Joe a call every Christmas. In fact, I will never forget a Christmas when I was seven and Joe was five. I’ve kept a secret about that Christmas for 20 years. Now hearing Joe’s voice makes me feel guilty (内疚的) about it all over again. I think he probably doesn’t even remember it.

When we were kids, Joe almost drove me “crazy”! If Mom brought home my favorite yogurt, Joe would make sure to eat it before I got a chance. When our parents gave us each our own basketball, Joe insisted on playing with mine instead of his own.

That Christmas when I was seven, I was determined to teach him a lesson. At that time I was old enough that I no longer believed in Santa, but I knew Joe did. I couldn’t stand him thinking Santa had put him on the “nice” list when I knew he’d been naughty (淘气的) all year.

One day before Christmas, I put on my winter jacket and headed over to our neighbor’s backyard. It was filled with rocks. To me they really looked like coal (煤炭). I was sure that they’d look like coal to Joe too. I filled a lot of the rocks into the pockets of my winter jacket, brought them up to my room and hid them under my bed. Then I waited.

That morning, I got up early, went downstairs secretly and put the rocks into the red stocking with Joe’s name on it. I watched Joe take down his heavy stocking, lay it on the living room floor.

With a wide smile on her face, 15-year-old Sirin eagerly rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But Mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke impatiently, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?”

Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皱眉),and then searched for her dad. “Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin exclaimed cheerfully. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!

Immediately, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”

He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.

She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔) ; her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed the door and threw herself on her bed.

“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.

The knocking sound on the door put a sudden stop to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately (故意地) came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly the morning incident came to mind. Softly, she asked, “ Honey, did I do anything wrong? ”

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Early in my teaching career, I heard countless excuses for why students didn’t have their homework. Most of them were false and many of them were amusing. And, yes, “the dog ate it” was one of them. As time passed and I grew less cheatable, I grew tired of hearing “I don’t have my homework because…” And so I quit accepting any excuse other than a confirmed death in the family.

When I was transferred (调动) to an inner-city middle school, I took my simple and direct attitude with me. “No excuses, no extensions!” I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school. I collected homework at the beginning of each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed loudly, shook my head in dramatic disgust and, with the students looking on, recorded a zero in the grade book. I soon gained the reputation I thought I wanted.

Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell rang, Anthony approached me. “Could I talk to you a minute?” he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor. “I know you said it doesn’t matter why we don’t have our homework done, but I don’t want you to think I’m a slacker (偷懒的人) because I come to school without mine so often.”

Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his lower lip was trembling. “It’s just that…well, my dad moved out, and my mom waits tables at night, so I have to take care of my little brothers. Sometimes they cry a lot, and it makes it hard to concentrate.”

I put my hand on Anthony’s thin shoulder. “Why are you just now telling me…?” I stopped in mid-sentence. I knew why. So I changed the question. “Would it help if you stayed here in my classroom after school and worked on it before you go home?” He looked at me and nodded.
