It was a busy day for 20-year-old Justin. His hot dog stand in the park was crowded with many customers. He was poor so he couldn’t afford to rent a cafe to sell hot dogs. Suddenly, an old woman got to his counter and asked how much a hot dog was. “They range from $3 to $7,” he replied.

“But that’s a touch expensive. I was just curious how much they cost. I don’t want any,” she said before walking away. Justin noticed she sat alone on a bench across from his stand. She kept looking in his direction, and he realized she wanted a hot dog but couldn’t afford one. He felt bad for her, so he quickly baked one and brought it to her. “I forgot to tell you that you’re my 50th customer of the day, so you get a free hot dog!” he said.

“Oh, is that so?” the old lady asked. “Thank you. I’m Emily, by the way.” She tasted it immediately and was shocked how delicious it was. “It’s different from regular hot dogs,” she said, taking another bite.

Justin said, “I love cooking, so I keep trying different things with my food. I have customers waiting for me. Have a wonderful day,” he hurried away.

The next day, when Emily returned, Justin treated her to a hot dog again. Emily refused because she didn’t have money, but he insisted (坚持). “Your feedback matters to me so I can improve my sauces (酱) and my business!” he said.

“Oh, you’re such a sweet boy,” Emily smiled through tears. “Thank you.” Deep down, Emily knew Justin was feeding her because she couldn’t afford the hot dog. She told him it wasn’t needed. But he kept feeding her every day.

One day, when Emily went to the park again, she said, “I kept a count of the hot dogs you bought me, and you’ve already spent $ 100 on me. So now it’s my turn to help you, boy. Come with me.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a bright morning in Beijing, young Mei Lin was on her way to the park with excitement. In her arms was a doll, not just any doll, but one her late grandfather had given her. This doll, with its soft smile and warm, comforting eyes, was Mei Lin’s treasure, a good reminder of her grandfather’s love.

However, a terrible thing happened when Mei Lin returned home. The doll, usually held safely in her arms, was gone. Panic and a deep sadness washed over her as she realized her treasured partner must have slipped out of her hands during her park visit. Heartbroken, Mei Lin couldn’t help but feel a part of her grandfather’s memory had disappeared with the doll.

As the evening light began to fall, Mei Lin’s home was filled with a heavy silence. Her mother, with a heart equally heavy, wrapped her arms around Mei Lin tightly. “Remember, my dear, the love your grandfather had for you is not gone. It lives in every memory, every story, and even now, it surrounds us,” she whispered gently. “This doll is a symbol, but your grandfather’s love is eternal (永恒的). We will do everything we can to find it, I promise you.”

The next day, they retraced (沿原路返回) their steps back to the park. Together, they examined every path and bench carefully, and their eyes searched every corner, but their efforts were in vain (徒劳的). The doll was nowhere to be found.

Refusing to give up, Mei Lin’s mother asked the park’s staff for help. Understanding the great value of the lost doll, they took immediate action. One park employee immediately turned to social media for help. He shared Mei Lin’s story accompanied by a heartfelt request, “Lost treasure: a beloved doll given by a loving grandfather having passed away. If found, please help restore a piece of a young girl’s heart.”

The response was immediate and touching. Words of comfort and offers of help flooded in, showing Mei Lin and her mother the kindness and care from strangers.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Uncle Johnny first showed up at our door one day, which came as quite a shock to us. We had heard a lot about Uncle Johnny from both Mom and Dad, but we never really believed that he existed. I mean we never saw him. He never called or sent us anything by mail, and his adventures always sounded too good to be true.

It was just so hard to believe that all of those amazing things could happen to just one man. I mean, how many people do you know that have been chased by fierce lions in the African jungle while they are traveling alone, lived with the Eskimos at the North Pole where the cold temperature may freeze a person, owned a kangaroo farm in Australia, and flown a hot air balloon across the Atlantic all by oneself?

We loved all the stories, but thought that our parents were trying to teach us about other parts of the world by the many adventures of Uncle Johnny. In our inner minds, Uncle Johnny was an imaginary person, who didn't exist at all. That’s why we were very surprised when he actually showed up at our door.

Uncle Johnny’s sudden appearance brought us excitement and curiosity. He was a tall, rugged man with a thick beard, and his eyes sparkled with the tales of his travels. Over the next few days, Uncle Johnny became a focus in our eyes. He taught us how to tie knots (结) used by sailors, showed us maps with his routes highlighted in bold colors, and even attempted to teach us a few words of the languages he had picked up along the way. We were deeply fascinated by his personality and the depth of his experiences.

Shelly was a teenage girl full of energy and curiosity. She found herself in a familiar yet exciting situation as New Year’s Eve drew near. Her parents, busy doctors in the emergency department, were eager to spend the festive occasion with family at her grandparents’ house. Jason and Judy, Shelly’s loving grandparents, were excited to host the joyous celebration.

In the midst of the busy preparations, Shelly found herself alone in the attic(阁楼) , filled with old trunks and forgotten relics. As she searched through the dusty relics in the attic, her eyes caught a bronze item among the forgotten treasures. It was a Scout badge(童子军徽章) , her father’s from his youthful days as a Scout. This badge held a profound meaning, symbolizing her father’s adventurous spirit and dedication to service.

Eager to share her find, Shelly carefully put the badge into her pocket and rejoined the celebration. As the evening progressed, she proudly showed off the badge to her friends in the neighborhood, sharing tales of her father’s Scouting adventures. However, time flew by with laughter and joy. It was then that the badge slipped unnoticed from her grasp, disappearing into the dark night.

Panic stricken and heartbroken, Shelly quickly searched for the lost badge, checking every corner she had been. But the badge was nowhere to be found. Tears streamed down her face as she knew how disappointed her father would be if he knew she had lost his precious Scout badge. I can’t be late. Not today! Malia thought as she raced across the park. Today her hula (裙舞) teacher would choose some students to dance at the luau (夏威夷派对).

Malia reached the end of the park. “Hello, Uncle Charles,” she greeted her teacher. All the dancers called him “Uncle” in the local way. Malia joined her hula sisters beneath a shady monkeypod tree. She pulled on a colorful skirt.

Uncle Charles knelt on a woven mat and beat a rhythm on a drum. The dancers warmed up with basic hula moves. Malia placed her hands on her waist and stepped back and forth.

“Swing your hips (臀部),” Uncle Charles called out. Malia stood in one spot and swung her hips side to side.

After the warm-up, Uncle took out his ukulele. It was time to practice their special dance for the luau. Malia took a deep breath and bent her knees.

“Remember to use expressions. You want to tell the story with your hands and faces,” Uncle said. Twang, twang went the ukulele. Malia lifted her arms. She and her hula sisters danced in a row across the grass. They stretched out their arms like birds in flight. Their movements matched the meaning of the happy song. There was no time to be nervous. Malia was too busy watching her hand motions and remembering her footwork. She also remembered to smile.

“Together! Watch your line,” Uncle called. Malia’s smile grew. She had made no mistakes. She spun to the rhythm of the ukulele and danced over to one side, as if she were on areal stage. Oh no! Malia had danced in the wrong direction. Malia felt her face burn, but she kept dancing and smiling. She turned in time to the music and danced in the proper direction—two steps behind and two beats late.

The music stopped, and Malia shook her head. “I’ll never be picked now.”

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Sizzle, sizzle (咝咝声)! The egg bubbled (冒泡)on the frying pan. I watched as its edges turned slightly brown then a bit black. Unfortunately, my head was stuck in the clouds, wondering if my parents would like my first attempt at cooking. I tried something simple, as I was still learning this new skill. When will the pots and pans respond to my call? How can I master steaming, boiling, frying, and the types of ingredients?

“Ah! No! My egg!” I shouted.

I quickly turned off the stove and slid (滑到)the blackened egg onto a plate. The color contrasted with the beautiful egg I had seen on YouTube previously. Mine looked nothing like the one online. Again, I wondered if my parents would appreciate the egg.

I split the egg right down the middle, hoping to see the yolk (蛋黄) flow out. To my disappointment, I discovered a firm yolk inside. I let out a frustrated sigh, turned and walked out of the kitchen with the plate in my hands.

At first, my parents were relatively pleased that the egg looked more or less like what they had imagined. But when they put it into their mouths, they tried to hide their discomfort. My Mom forced out a smile as she swallowed the egg.

“Good attempt Daniel!” she exclaimed cheerfully.

“It tastes delicious!” my Dad added in.

I could visibly see that their faces were twisted (扭曲)in disgust. It was painfully obvious that my egg tasted horrible.

“It’s fine,” I sighed. “I know the egg tastes bad.”

Disappointed, I trudged (费力地走) back into my room, unable to contain the feelings of failure bursting inside of me.

Don’t give up! I told myself. This is only your first attempt and if you persevere, you will surely improve!

With determination burning in me again, I turned on my laptop and searched for any cooking techniques I needed to master in order to cook. YouTube videos gave me a bit of reference, but I needed to seek advice.

When Mark was five years old, his father died and his life fell apart. His mom Jane and he lived a hard life. They had to move from California to Arizona and live with Mark’s grandmother, Moria. That meant Mark lost all his friends and his carefree life.

It could have been the end of Mark’s childhood, but then he met 76-year-old Mr. Kelsey, Moira’s next-door neighbor. One day, he was kicking a soccer ball around the yard when one kick sent the ball over the fence into Kelsey’s yard. Mark came to Kelsey’s home, feeling a little nervous.

“Grandpa, can I get my ball back?” Mark said cautiously. “Of course,” Kelsey said gently with a smile. “Come over and have a talk with me, will you?” Then they had a pleasant chat.

Kelsey lived alone but had a loving and patient heart to children. Over time, the two of them gradually established a deep friendship, enjoying each other’s company.

Half a year later, something unexpected happened. Mark learned Kelsey had a serious eye disease but he couldn’t afford the $3,000 surgery (外科手术). Without timely treatment, he would go blind completely. However, Jane and Moria were also on a tight budget, unable to spare any money for Kelsey.

Mark made up his mind to wash cars at the parking lot of the shopping center on the weekends to raise money for poor Kelsey. He offered to wash each car for one dollar. Mark knew he had to wash a lot of cars to make up the money, but he was determined.

A few days later, one of his customers, named Jason, asked curiously, “What do you do this for, kid?” “My neighbor, Mr. Kelsey. He needs an eye surgery. I’m raising money for him. I badly need $3, 000,” Mark replied. “You’re a kind boy,” Jason said softly. “Where do you live?” Mark told Jason his address. Even now, I can still recall the moment when my dream finally came true during my last year of school.

The dream of becoming a member of my school cabinet took shape when I was just seven. Those school leaders were my role models as they always gave instructions, conducted activities and represented us to give speeches on school issues. So, for the next few years, I tried so hard to make it a reality.

When I was twelve, I entered my name. I prepared my election speech and then, on the afternoon that we all gave our speeches. Everybody voted. I was hopeful and I prayed that I would win. The next morning,at the school assembly I waited anxiously for my name to be announced. I was all set to realize my dream.

One by one, the names were announced and the whole school cheered as the girls with the highest votes walked up to the stage. I closed my eyes and waited for my name to be called. The last name was read and my name wasn't among them. I was totally brokenhearted. My dream had been shattered, and I just wanted to cry my heart out.

Then the reality struck me: I hadn't had a chance to win. I wasn't well known and wasn't pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it took to win a school election. I was so depressed because I had nurtured this dream for a long time.

As I cried in my room that evening, I suddenly decided I was going to stop seeing myself as a failure. I decided that I would stand for elections again in my final year at school-and I would win.

I recognized that my competitors had a lot of things in their favor. Their personalities were their biggest strength. However, I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strength was the faith I had in myself to be a good leader.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was an average student in my early elementary years. I came home with a steady flow of B’s, C’s and the occasional F’s in second language subjects. I was told that I wasn’t applying myself and, as every report card I ever brought home clearly stated, I talked too much.

I didn’t write when I was supposed to write. I talked to others while the teacher was giving instructions. That I could recite what she had said to the class while I was talking was not helpful because I had a negative effect on my classmates’ learning. So I regularly brought home disappointing report cards.

My parents and my teachers didn’t know what to do with me. Punishments didn’t seem to work. Rewards didn’t seem to either. And, frankly, I don’t think I knew what I could do to “apply myself”. And I certainly didn’t know how to not enjoy talking with my classmates! What I knew was that I talked too much. Until grade 5.

That autumn, we had a sudden change in teachers as our elderly teacher took a medical leave. In his place, a young substitute (代课老师) arrived — Mrs Royal. She looked like she was freshly out of university and seemed too young to be cast in the role of being responsible for a class of tween, but there she was, charged with a lively group, and me.

I don’t remember many details of that year except the afternoon when I got my first report card from her. She handed out the report cards right after the afternoon break and invited us to look them over. Then she let us know that we could all talk quietly amongst ourselves while she called each student up one at a time, in alphabetical order (按字母顺序), to discuss our report cards with her.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My mother, a kind and considerate lady, would help others in need, though our family was not rich. When I was young, she worked as a housekeeper in the home of a wealthy businessman.

Every day, after tidying up the rooms at the businessman’s house, she would cross the street to buy groceries. As she passed by a row of low rented houses, she would always have a look at an elderly man who collected scrap (废品). The old man, in his seventies, always carried a bag. He lived in a tiny house with a small window. My mother couldn’t help but feel a sense of sympathy whenever she saw the old man eating dry bread, accompanied by a bowl of water. Thus, she would bring him old newspapers, empty cans and beer bottles, along with some food. To the old man, those were precious gifts. The businessman saw my mother’s good behavior and kept it in mind.

I learned from my mother that the poor old man lived alone. His small room was almost empty except a worn mat and a pile of collected scrap. His only way of showing gratitude to my mother was through a humble smile on his face. I once asked my mother, “Why are you so nice to the old man?” She looked at me and answered affectionately, “Because he looks like my father in the countryside.”

As the New Year approached, the businessman visited his relatives abroad, leaving my mother to watch over his house. He paid my mother double wages for her efforts, and prepared extra money for the old man.

The old man frequently appeared in various neighborhoods with his bag, and his business seemed to be going well. He not only collected plastic and cardboard boxes left at doorsteps but also threw the litter beside them into the bins. Watching him walking away, with his white hair blown in the cold wind, my mother’s heart ached.

My mother told me that she decided to knit (编织) two woolen sweaters, one for her father and the other for the old man. “Perhaps the old man had no children, but it was the New Year, and he deserved a gift, too,” she said.
