文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。人们不应该局限于现状,应该走出舒适圈,挑战自我,文章给出了4个建议。

1 . If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all.     1     So challenge the following limits:

1.Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.

If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call.     2     But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eye and say, “Go on. I’m not scared!”

2.     3

Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.

3. Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.

4     A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.

4.Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers, try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they’re going to be. Get out of your house or go online to book your ticket right now.     5

A.Someone may hang up on you.
B.You should do it continuously.
C.You don’t need to go to the gym.
D.Running in the gym may be a better choice.
E.Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.
F.Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop.
G.You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了中国古老的“食补”习俗。

2 . Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.

Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油) chicken soup every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.

The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.

So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.

1. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A.It is catching less attention.B.It is enjoyed by many young people.
C.It is well-known worldwide.D.It is becoming increasingly popular.
2. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A.Chinese cabbage.B.Fruit tea.
C.Sesame oil chicken soup.D.Fish soup.
3. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.Medicine.B.Restaurant.C.Manufacture.D.Agriculture.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Charm of Chinese CuisineB.The Popularity of Tonic Food
C.An Introduction of Chinese Tonic FoodD.Differences Between “Hot” Food and “Cold” Food

3 . I’ve been a volunteer in the Macmillan@Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year. I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work. I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work.

At one time, I felt I made a real difference when a lady come to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We, together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions she felt. We knew we could arrange something, so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.

The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is non-clinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor’s surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.

It’s great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a solution for people who come in. It’s good to have to team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.

1. What can we infer about the author?
A.He is a retired doctor.
B.He is volunteering in a hospital.
C.He is a counselor in cancer.
D.He has fought against cancer before.
2. Why did the lady feel upset?
A.Because she was affected by cancer.
B.Because her husband suffered from cancer.
C.Because she didn’t know how to treat cancer.
D.Because she had a poor relation with her husband.
3. What do we know about the volunteers?
A.They do well in teamwork.B.They receive medical training.
C.They all waited to be helped.D.They often meet unusual things.
4. Why does the author write this text?
A.To call on readers to do voluntary work.
B.To show us how to help those in trouble.
C.To share his experiences as a volunteer.
D.To teach us how to take care of cancer patients.

Michael sat on the wooden bench outside the house holding a fourleaf clover. Michael had believed that fourleaf clovers brought good luck, but he started doubting that kind of power.

Michael was eleven. It had been two months since his mum and dad died in an accident. A widow by the name of Jill adopted him. Michael had a dislike for Jill. Her voice was loud. She also made him do her chores. Michael felt not as much as a son to her. He dreamed a lot. He spoke little. He cried secretly. He had even been working on a plan for two weeks to flee the house.

That was, until he heard Jill parking her Honda into the garage.

Michael stuffed the fourleaf clover in his left pocket. Before he realised it, Jill was standing in front of him, with a small beagle in her hand. She put the beagle down. It ran to Michael and sat on his Nike tennis shoes. Michael knelt down to pet it. After a while, he looked up,“Is the dog for me?”

Jill laughed,“Of course! You are the slowest little boy ever! I've got you a little puppy to make you work faster.”

Michael couldn't see how a beagle would help with his chores, but he thought it would be nice to have a friend. “Give him a name,” Jill said.

Michael thought for a moment. He saw a big, black spot on his back. That's it! Spot!“I'll name him Spot!” Michael announced.

“Spot, Spot, stupid name but it'll do. Now, you'd better clean the bathroom and finish your homework before dinner's ready.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

9 . Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管) circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.

Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight success was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight success.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.

This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. Then the students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

1. The underlined word "liability" most probably means _________.
A.troubleB.advantage
C.misfortuneD.disadvantage
2. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness _________.
A.is of great importance to women
B.often enables women to succeed quickly
C.strengthens the feminine qualities required
D.makes women look more honest and capable
3. Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _________.
A.affects men and women alike
B.turns out to be a disadvantage to men
C.has as little effect on men as on women
D.is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women
4. The author writes this passage to _________.
A.demand equal rights for women
B.state the importance of appearance
C.give advice to job-seekers who are attractive
D.discuss the disadvantages of being attractive
