Just like words we use, body language also varies from culture     4     culture. The crucial thing is that body language should be used     5    (appropriate). For instance, Americans wave goodbye with the palm facing the person they are waving to. But it may occur with the palm up to the sky in other cultures. There are also some differences in how we touch someone we     6    (talk) to. In countries like France and Russia, people kiss their friends     7     the cheek when they meet. Elsewhere, people favour shaking hands,     8    (bow) from the waist, or nodding the head when they meet someone else.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。报告显示二手服装行业在美国以及世界各地都在迅速发展,作者认为转售比把过时或不合身的衣服放在衣橱里要健康得多,论述了购买二手衣服的好处。

4 . Online secondhand store thredUP has shown its tenth yearly Resale Report, which shows that the secondhand clothing industry is growing rapidly in the United States, as well as around the world. The secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026.

When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly experienced in what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Generation Z shoppers say they’ll pay more for the clothes that they know they can resell, and more than half of them resold clothes last year.

This is a much healthier opinion than storing out-of-style or ill-fitting clothes in a closet (衣柜). As resale becomes easier thanks to mobile technology and online stores, increasing numbers of customers hope to turnover their closets. This helps the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.

Buying or selling things secondhand helps to reduce people’s worry about the environment. As thredUP reported in 2021, buying or selling things secondhand reduces a product’s carbon Footprint (碳排放量) by 82%. It requires far less water to produce. Besides, it’s a good way to save money.

Aja Barber said in her book: “Clothing is produced at a fast speed, so it is important that resale become a key part of people’s lifestyles. Accepting reuse is not always easy when we are faced with many choices — many of which encourage the buying of cheap, single-use clothes-but the rise of online resale is enabling people to make different choices and do so with pride and joy.”

It’s great to hear that resale is being accepted by more people, which can help us save money while protecting our planet.

1. What can we say about secondhand clothing according to the report?
A.It is a fast-growing industry.B.It makes the market full of anxiety.
C.It is accepted by most people.D.It is more comfortable than new clothing.
2. How does the author feel about resale?
A.Unclear.B.Worried.C.Doubtful.D.Supportive.
3. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A.The dangers of carbon footprint.B.The ways of reducing people’s worry.
C.The advantages of buying used clothes.D.The causes of environmental problems.
4. What did Aja Barber want to tell us?
A.The clothing industry causes a lot of waste.
B.Online resale is changing people’s shopping habits
C.People are confused when faced with many choices.
D.Dressing styles are closely connected with social life

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了出租车司机Mansoor Khalid通过在乘客座位上放一些糖果,来让乘客高兴。文章讲述了他这么做的起因经过以及人们对此的反响。

5 . New York City streets are full of similar-looking yellow cabs (出租车). Among them, however, there is the Candy Cab—a free candy store on wheels.

Mansoor Khalid, a taxi driver, started handing out candy in 2012, following the death of his one-year-old son, who suffered from a serious heart disease. While his son was in hospital, Mansoor often took coffee and candy for the nurses and saw how happy these small gestures made them.

Wanting to feel some joy again, he began putting a couple pieces of candy on the passenger seats, just to see their faces light up. Those few pieces soon became piles and piles of candy, as Mansoor Khalid realized that the candy made everyone smile and “Candy Cab” was born! The kind man, who spends over $300 each month on the candy, says that seeing his customers happy makes his job more fun.

There is a sign in the cab that reads, “No eating or drinking inside this car except candies.” The driver even offers a free ride to any passenger that can finish all the candy that he puts in front of them—So far, no one has been able to meet the challenge.

Not surprisingly, Mansoor Khalid gets plenty of smiles and hugs and also thousands of warm messages and videos on his overflowing Twitter, and Facebook accounts. But the best part about the Candy Cab is that you don’t need to rely on luck. Interested passengers can simply call it by sending him a message via one of his social media pages and they will be picked up at no extra cost.

1. Why did Mansoor put some candy on the passenger seats?
A.To show his generosity.B.To remind himself of his son.
C.To attract more passengers.D.To make his passengers happy.
2. How do passengers react to Mansoor’s candy cab?
A.Reliable and proud.B.Warm and inspired.
C.Strange and shocked.D.Ridiculous and confused.
3. What can we learn from the text?

B.Mansoor is so kind as to often offer a free ride to passengers.
C.Mansoor finds more fun in his job by treating passengers to candy.
D.Mansoor will charge less for the cab called via his social media pages.
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A.A Candy Cab DriverB.A Warm Sign in the Cab
C.A Present of a Cab DriverD.A Free Ride to Passengers

Tom worked for a company that helped people buy or sell houses. One day, he took the bus home. The bus dropped him a few blocks away from his home, so be walked the rest of the way. As he was nearing his home, he saw a man begging for money. He took out some coins to give the man. “Hey, man. How are you today?” Tom asked.

“Hello, sir. I’m doing all right, I guess,” the man replied, smiling at Tom. “I need to feed my children. This is a huge help. Thank you.” Tom wished him good luck, and went on his way. He felt great about helping out. But he hoped there was more he could do to this poor man, although he himself wasn’t rich at all.

During the following days, Tom tried to give the man some money and bring him food when he passed by him.

Actually, the man, named Adam, begged for money to feed the many homeless dogs he had brought to his home. He had a job at night at a construction site. But the money made there wasn’t enough for him to care for the dogs which he considered as his kids, so he had to beg for money. However, Tom didn’t know about it.

One day, Tom stopped at the newsstand (报摊) on the street. And the owner asked him, “Why do you always give that man money?” Tom explained that man had to feed his family. “But that man doesn’t have a family or any kids,” the owner said, not knowing the truth.

Tom angrily walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging for money and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people. If you need a job, I can help you. This is just wrong,” Tom said angrily. The man stood up and explained, “Sir, I’m not lying at all.” Hearing Adam’s words, Tom said, “Prove it.”
