1 . How do we take part in dinner party in foreign countries ? Have you ever experienced it ? I hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I'm in London. And my friend Mallery invited me. And because dinner parties in London are very different from those back in New York. There, "I'm having a dinner party" means: " I'm booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can't afford and we'll be sharing the cheque evenly, no matter what you eat." Worse, in Manhattan, there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They'll throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don't drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout: "Where are you going?" And it's not like I can say I have somewhere to go: everyone knows I have nowhere to go.

But in London, dinner parties are in people's homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India, Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations. In New York, the mix is less striking. It's like a gathering at Bloomingdale's a well-known department store.

For New Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery's, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was. In New York, people would think it was a usual new club.

1. What does the word "shot", in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Choice.B.Try.C.Style.D.Goal.
2. What does the writer dislike most about dinner parties in New York?
A.There is a strange mix of people.B.The restaurants are expensive.
C.The bill is not fairly shared.D.People have to pay cash.
3. What is the author's opinion of some New Yorkers from her experience?
A.Easy-going.B.Self-centred.C.Generous.D.Conservative

2 . How wonderful would it be if new technology could help the physically challenged? A smart wearable device that enables people with speaking disabilities to communicate normally is giving hope to those without a voice.

Tao Luqi, a research fellow at Chongqing University, used a material called graphene (石墨烯) to produce an artificial throat with a tiny sensor (感应器) that allows people with speech impairments (障碍) to speak normally, according to a paper published in Nature Communications in 2017. Tao has continued his work on the device for the last four years.

“Although the speaking impaired people can’t speak, their throats can vibrate (振动) ,” Tao told The Paper. “If I put a device made of graphene into the throat of a person, it can detect the vibrations and make sounds using electrical signals.”

Even whispers, screams and coughs at different frequencies (频率) can be recorded and encoded (编码) by the device, and it can arrange them into groups. When the device detects the sounds in a particular group, it will reproduce the words, phrases or sentences, according to Tao.

“But the speaking impaired people need to classify their own language sounds in groups and memorize them, just like typing keys on a keyboard,” Tao said. Tao’s artificial throat has brought the possibilities of graphene to reality. It’s been 17 years since the discovery of graphene, and the world has been waiting for the “wonder material” to provide innovations (创新) . At only the width of an atom (原子), graphene is the thinnest material known to humans and also the strongest. The material is also an efficient conductor (导体) of heat and electricity, and is ultra-lightweight, China Daily reported.

“Graphene really does have fantastic properties and its potential is huge,” said Khasha Ghaffarzadeh, a director at UK-based research consultancy IDTechEx.

China has emerged as a key country for production. Around 3,000 Chinese companies are exploring uses for graphene, according to government statistics in 2018, while half of the world’s graphene-related patents (专利) have been filed in China, according to China Daily.

“It’s a brand-new science, and China is trying to take the lead,” said Neill Ricketts, chief executive at Versarien, a UK-based advanced material company.

1. How does the artificial throat give those who are speaking impaired the ability to speak?
A.It makes their throat vibrate.
B.It transforms vibrations into readable words.
C.It detects sounds normal people cannot hear.
D.
2. What do the speaking impaired people need to do to use the device?
A.Identify frequencies of different sounds.B.Arrange the words into sentences.
C.Memorize their sound groups.D.Type the words with the device.
3. What can we know about graphene?
A.It is widely used in innovations.
B.It is the thinnest and strongest material ever found.
C.It can improve the efficiency of heat and electricity.
D.It weighs less than any other material.
4. What is the second to last paragraph mainly about?
A.Graphene’ s potential widespread use in China.
B.Development of technology using graphene.
C.Graphene-related patents in China.
D.China’s leading role in graphene production.

3 . Do you know the proverb “no pain, no gain”? It gives the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It seems that the only way to know if we’ re putting in enough work is how much hardship we bear. We are totally taken up with study, shutting ourselves away for a big exam. Is that necessarily true?

When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another idea, we just shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off. Shutting ourselves away can make us learn to hate studying, leading to a situation where, instead of being able to concentrate on our work, we are troubled by how unfair it is that we must study. This can be part of a vicious cycle (恶性循环) that traps us into ineffective revision, or poor progress fueling further annoyance.

Thankfully, working in the company of other people really helps fight against that. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(使人分心的事). It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just lazy company. They constantly try to keep others in conversation, while studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. Of course, it’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities where you would rather be playing than studying. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is most likely to end with a new high score of games rather than productive revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you. Besides, we should know friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation. And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.

1. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To introduce effective studying means.
B.To encourage us to work as hard as possible.
C.To remind us to balance activities and study.
D.To discuss the importance of family company.
2. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A.Good ideas are needed in terms of progress.
B.Ways that interest us can lead to effective revision.
C.Shutting ourselves away can help concentrate on work.
D.With study techniques, revision is interesting and easy for certain.
3. What does the last sentence in Paragraph 3 imply?
A.One should learn from certain activities that interest him.
B.Playing video games is helpful for effective study.
C.One shouldn’t study with the company of a video game player.
D.The more time one spends in playing games, the higher test scores one will get.
4. What should you do if you are studying in a noisy environment?
A.Give up others company at once.
B.Think twice before taking any action.
C.Give indication of not wanting to be interrupted.
D.Force yourself to be accustomed to the environment.

5 . Happiness is not a warm phone, according to a new study exploring the link between young life satisfaction and screen time. The study was led by professor of psychology Jean M. Twenge at San Diego State University (SDSU).

To research this link, Twenge, along with colleagues Gabrielle Martin at SDSU and W. Keith Campbell at the University of Georgia, dealt with data from the Monitoring the Future (MtF) study, a nationally representative survey of more than a million U. S. 8th-, 10th-, and 12th-graders. The survey asked students questions about how often they spent time on their Phones, tablets and computers, as well as questions about their face-to-face social interactions and their overall happiness.

On average found that teens who spent more time in front of screen devices — playing computer games, using social media, texting and video chatting — were less happy than those who invested more time in non-screen activities like sports, reading newspapers and magazines, and face-to-face social interactions.

"The key to digital media use and happiness is limited use," Twenge said. "Aim to spend no more than two hours a day on digital media, and try to increase the amount of time you spend seeing friends face-to-face and exercising — two activities reliably linked to greater happiness."

Looking at historical trends from the same age groups since the 1990s, it's easy to find that the increase of screen devices over time happened at the same time as a general drop-off in reported happiness in U. S. teens. Specifically, young peopled life satisfaction and happiness declined sharply after 2012. That's the year when the percentage of Americans who owned a smartphone rose above 50 percent. By far the largest change in teens' lives between 2012 and 2016 was the increase in the amount of time they spent on digital media, and the following decline in in-person social activities and sleep.

1. Which method did Twenge's team use for the study?
A.Calculating students' happiness.
B.Asking students certain questions.
C.Analyzing data from a survey.
D.Doing experiments on screen time.
2. How does the author develop the finding of the study in paragraph 3?
A.By making a comparison.
B.By giving an example.
C.By making an argument.
D.By introducing a concept.
3. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To draw a conclusion from the study.
B.To offer some advice to the readers.
C.To prove social activities' importance.
D.To support the researchers' finding.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Quitting Phones Equals Happiness
B.Screen Time Should Be Banned
C.Teens' Lives Have Changed Sharply
D.Screen-addicted Teens Are Unhappier

7 . More than half the world’s population live in cities, and by 2050 the UN expects that proportion to reach 68%. This means more homes, roads and other infrastructure. In India alone, a city the size of Chicago will have to be developed every year to meet demand for housing. Such a construction increase is a bad sign for dealing with climate change, because making steel and concrete, two of the most common building materials, generates around 8% of the world’s CO2 emissions (排放). If cities are to expand and become greener at the same time, they will have to be made from something else.

Wood is one of the most promising sustainable (可持续的) alternatives to steel and concrete. It is not, however, everyday wood that is attracting the interest of architects.

Rather, it is a material called engineered timber. This is a combination of different layers, each designed to meet the requirements of specific parts such as floors, panels and beams (横梁). Designers can use it to provide levels of strength like steel, in a product that is up to 80% lighter. In addition, engineered timber is usually made into large sections in a factory for future use, which reduces the number of deliveries to a construction site.

According to Michael Ramage of the University of Cambridge, a wooden building produces 75% less CO2 than a steel and concrete one of the same size. However, if building with wood takes off, it does raise concern about there being enough trees to go round. But with sustainably managed forests that should not be a problem, says Dr Ramage. A family-sized apartment requires about 30 cubic metres of timber, and he estimates Europe’s sustainable forests alone grow that amount every seven seconds. Nor is fire a risk, for engineered timber does not burn easily. Besides, fireproofing layers can be added to the timber. All in all, then, it looks as if wood as a building material may get a new lease of life.

1. Why is India mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To point out the severe pollution.
B.To predict the population increase.
C.To indicate the high degree of urbanization.
D.To show the great need for building materials.
2. What can be learned about engineered timber?
A.It is produced at a low cost.
B.It hardly appeals to architects.
C.It helps save energy in transportation.
D.It possesses greater strength than steel.
3. What does the underlined phrase “takes off” in the last paragraph mean ?
A.Becomes cheaper.B.Gains popularity.
C.Requires less work.D.Proves sustainable.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Making Future Cities More Attractive
B.Living in a World with Less Emission
C.Building Sustainable Cities with Woods
D.Growing More Trees for Future Building

8 . If you recently closed on a new house, you probably started house hunting in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, hosting a housewarming in 2021 is probably going to be harder to pull off. To help, we’ve cooked up a few ideas of how to hold a pandemic-era housewarming party.

The basics: Safe

Anything that you do during the pandemic should follow some simple rules.     1

For example: wash your hands a lot, wear a mask in public and maintain social distancing of at least six feet from people.

That last one makes a housewarming party almost impossible. Please keep these safety measures in mind as you read on.

IDEA 1: Use the Zoom (云视频会议软件) call.

If we suggested having a housewarming party via Zoom one and a half years ago, our editors would have thought we were crazy.     2     Zoom is old-hat at this point, but we still sort of like Zoom calls. They gave us a chance to stay close with people we couldn’t see in person.     3

This idea starts by creating a room-to-room video tour of your home, showing your new place and highlighting why you’re so excited to be living there.

IDEA 2: Take it outside.

4     But now is not the time to have a large gathering indoors. Just do it outside. If you have a yard, set up separate stations for barbecuing and for friends to keep at a safe distance. You could even have a local restaurant to cater it with takeout.

Lastly:     5

When the health risks are over, plan to hold a proper get-together, remembering that you were creative enough to find a way to celebrate the purchase of your new home during a global pandemic.

A.We get it.
B.You know the ones.
C.Today, not so much.
D.Recall it when possible.
E.The same can be true for your housewarming event.
F.For some, a party isn’t a party unless it’s a big one.
G.For entertainment, you can’t get better at social distancing.

9 . In an effort to fight the “throw-away culture” and promote reuse and repair, the city of Berlin has taken the unique step of opening its own secondhand department store.

This isn’t your grandma’s thrift shop (旧货商店). It resells perfectly good items that would otherwise be thrown away. A pun on the German words for “department store” and “conserving house”, B-Wa(h)renhaus sells a wide variety of products. Far from simply selling old items, the electronic goods have been fixed by expert technicians and come with a year’s guarantee. And, to reach more secondhand shoppers, the store was set up right in the middle of the famous Karstadt department store.

With the success of its initial six-month trial run, the city plans to open four more similar operations in other parts of Berlin. By 2030, it hopes to have at least one location in each of Berlin’s 12 districts. Since 2008, city policies and educational campaigns have reduced average annual household waste by about 25 pounds per resident. It also recycles about 49% of its mineral construction waste. Currently, the city estimates that 8% of abandoned electronic goods and 6% of huge items thrown away can actually be reused. The goal is to expand the market for these items beyond the usual bargain hunters and eco-conscious consumers.

“Three years ago, we started collecting all kinds of used goods,” city spokesperson Dorothee Winden said. “There are lots of things that are well-preserved and functioning but aren’t being used anymore. The goal is to give these things a new life with somebody who can use them.” The store also includes an education center to encourage more sustainable lifestyles — and also gave an award to a project that recycles school uniforms, so that parents don’t have to buy new ones every year.

1. Why has Berlin opened its own secondhand department store?
A.To attract more shoppers.B.To promote recycling.
C.To foster traditional culture.D.To expand secondhand market.
2. In which aspect is B-Wa(h)renhaus different from the traditional thrift store?
A.The variety of the goods. B.The location of the store.
C.The quality of the products.D.The operation of the store.
3. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Berlin currently has 4 second-hand stores in construction.
B.Berlin has been successful in cutting its waste since 2008.
C.It is not easy to make the goal to expand the market a reality.
D.It is estimated that Berlin will be a zero-waste city by 2030.
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce Berlin’s new reuse shop operation.
B.To raise people’s awareness of reasonable shopping.
C.To persuade people to become eco-friendly shoppers.
D.To encourage more people to donate to secondhand shops.
