文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了有助于和父母交流的四种方法。

5 . As most of us know, talking to and listening to parents don’t always go smoothly. Emotions and past experiences can get in the way. Since communication is a two-way street, some depends on your parents and some of what happens depends on you. The way you talk can influence how well a parent listens to and understands you.    1

•Be clear and direct.

Be as clear as you can about what you think, feel, and want.     2    They can listen better or be more helpful if they understand what you mean specifically and what’s really going on.

•Be honest.

If you’re always honest, a parent will be likely to believe what you say.     3    If you sometimes hide the truth or add too much drama, parents will have a harder time believing what you tell them.

    4

Using a friendly and respectful tone makes it more likely that parents will listen and take what you say seriously. Of course, this is hard for any of us when we’re feeling heated about something. If you think your emotions might get the better of you, do something to let off steam and calm down before talking.

•Try to understand their point of view.

If you have a disagreement, can you see your parents’ side? If you can, say so.    5

A.Try not to argue.
B.Communicate as often as possible.
C.If you lie, they’ll find it hard to trust you.
D.Make careful preparations before talking to your parents.
E.Here are some guidelines to consider how to talk to parents.
F.Give details that can help parents understand your situation.
G.Telling your parents that you understand their views and feelings helps them be willing to see yours, too.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了新的研究发现,即使烟头熄灭并冷却,它们仍会在空气中释放有害化学物质。

6 . Cigarettes aren’t just harmful when they’re being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24 hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine that an actively burning cigarette would produce.

While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out, an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA )found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later.

“I was absolutely surprised,” says environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). “The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand smoking, the impact of the cigarette ends has been paid little attention.”

To measure emissions from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2, 100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends were sealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so.

After setting the room’s temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. In other words, leaving ashtrays out for days, especially in the heat, seems like a bad idea, and could potentially expose smokers to even more harmful chemicals than we thought.

1. What can we learn from paragraph one?
A.Cigarette ends contain no nicotine.
B.Cigarette ends still produce nicotine five days later.
C.Cigarette ends give off nicotine for days.
D.Cigarette ends create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes.
2. What do Poppendieck’s words suggest?
A.First-hand smoking does most harm.
B.The findings are within his expectation.
C.Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors.
D.Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored.
3. Which word best describes the author’ attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days?
A.Unclear.B.Disapproving.C.Unconcerned.D.Puzzled.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Used Cigarette Ends Release Harmful Chemicals
B.Cigarettes Are More Harmful While Being Smoked
C.Research Found Reasons For Cigarette Ends’ Harm
D.Cigarette Ends Produce More Chemicals in the Heat

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要报道的是在2022年北京冬奥会上,一些热带国家也为了金牌而战。

7 . Tropical nations have never won a medal at the Winter Olympics. But this has not stopped more and more countries from striving to break this fate. At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, some of these countries are “coming for gold”. Let’s check them out.

From Arabian Dunes to Ice Slopes

Fayik Abdi, 24, was Saudi Arabia’s only representative at the Winter Olympics and competed in alpine skiing. The Winter Olympics, which opened in the Chinese capital on February 4, was the first participation in Saudi Arabia’s history. In this part of Saudi Arabia, snow falling from the sky is a rarity, enough to make news all over the world.

So, how did Abdi get here? His Olympic dream had an unusual start. Abdi initially responded to an ad, like more than 100 other applicants. It was handed out by the newly established Saudi Arabian Winter Sports Federation, looking for potential candidates to join the Olympic team. Abdi learned to ski at the age of four, and when he was in college in the United States, he took to the slopes whenever he had time. And his journey, as a trend representative of more and more “snowless” countries participating in the Winter Olympics, is a perfect fit. When the first Winter Olympics were held in 1924, only 14 European countries and the United States and Canada participated. By the last Winter Olympics hosted by Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018, a record 92 countries had participated.

Jamaica Snow Team

When it comes to a “layout country participating in the Winter Olympics”, you often think of Jamaica, a Caribbean island country, mainly because Hollywood had a movie Cool Runnings in 1993. The film is based on the Jamaican four-person snow team at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics in Canada. The film not only entertained audiences all over the world, but also inspired other “snowless countries” to try it out.

Although Jamaica had participated in the two-person snowmobile event in several Winter Olympics since then, the Beijing Winter Olympics was the first time the country had participated in the men’s four-person snowmobile event since the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998.

In Beijing, the Caribbean island nation also had a men’s duo sled team, while Jazmine Fenlator-Victoria competed in the women’s sled.

A.Something common.B.Something rare.

B.Only fourteen countries took part in the first Winter Olympics.
C.More and more countries participate in the Winter Olympics.
D.The movie Cool Runnings is based on the Jamaican four-person snow team at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics Winter Olympics.
3. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A.A science fiction.B.A novel.
C.A travel guide.D.A sport magazine.
4. What is the main idea of this passage?

8 . Warm-blooded species are evolving (进化) to have larger beaks, legs and ears to regulate body temperature as the planet warms up, new study suggests. The scientists behind the study warn the physiological changes do not mean animals are coping with climate change. If animals fail to control their body temperature, they can overheat and die.

Some animals in warmer climates have historically evolved to have larger beaks or ears to get rid of heat more easily. A larger wing, ear or beak relative to body size gives smaller animals a greater surface area to lose excess heat. Several species of Australian parrot have shown a 4-10% increase in size since 1871, which correlates with the rising summer temperatures over the years, the study says.

The scientists do say it’s hard to put the climate as the only cause of shapeshifting, but that other examples of species changing show the effect of heat. Wood mice are evolving to have longer nails, masked shrews are getting longer tails and legs, and bats in warm climates have bigger wings. The study suggests that shapeshiting is likely to continue as the climate becomes warmer because higher temperatures will influence the demand on animals to regulate their body temperature.

“Shapeshifting does not mean that animals are coping with climate change and that all is fine,” Sara says. “It just means they are evolving to survive it, but we re not sure what the other ecological consequences of these changes are, or that all species are capable of changing and surviving. The climate change that we have created is heaping a whole lot of pressure on them, and while some species will adapt, others will not.”

1. Why the warm-blooded species are evolving to be larger?
A.To cope with climate change.
B.To regulate their body temperature.
C.To control their body temperature.
D.To grow up.
2. What does the underlined word “correlates” in paragraph 2 refer to ?
A.Change.B.Evolve.C.Relate.D.Control.
3. What does shapeshifting means ?
A.Animals are coping with climate change.
B.Animals all are fine.
C.Animals are evolving to survive.
D.Animals are larger and larger.
4. What can be inferred according to Sara’ opinion?
A.Shapeshifting is caused by climate change.
B.All species are capable of changing and surviving.
C.Protect environment is very important.
D.Only the fittest can survive.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了高中新生入学时所面临的一些问题并给出了合理的建议,同时本文还介绍了高中与初中的差异。

10 . You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel jittery that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?

Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.

When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.

The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.

Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.

Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.

1. What does the underlined word “jittery” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Proud.B.Confident.C.Anxious.D.Bored.
2. What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task.B.The freshman orientation.
C.The ability to make friends.D.The relationship with teachers.
3. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A.Develop friendships.B.Develop their interests.
C.Build up their strength.D.Improve their learning ability.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What you learned in junior high school.
B.The importance of being more independent.
C.How to improve yourself in senior high school.
D.The difference between junior high school and senior high school.
