Take a seat. Daddy has something to share with you. I would like us to have a heart-to-heart—even though, over the years, you have slowly broken mine. Oh shut up; you so have! If you go out and ask any mother or father out there, I guarantee they’ll say the same thing: All children break their parents’ hearts. It’s just what children do. In fact, it’s what Daddy’s own mother continues to remind him still, to this very day, every time they speak on the phone.
In your baby years, you vomited, pooped and peed all over me. In your teen years, you came home from parties and vomited red wine all over my already-dirty carpets. There was a time you experimented with drugs and all those things I hate. Where does the heartbreak end?
Still, I want you to know you are loved, because various parenting magazines insist that’s my responsibility: to make you feel special and valued and so on. And of course Daddy loves you! Don’t you see? And Daddy values you. Very much so. How could he not value you, when you, as a test-tube baby, cost so much to come into this world?
Now you’re old enough to hear the truth about parenting. And it’s this: all kids annoy their parents. Like you, I started off adorable. Then I went through my weird-body-shape-and-acne years, lost all my cuteness, developed an attitude and never once did I apologize to my parents for stealing the best years of their lives.
When you become a parent yourself, here are some parenting skills you might want to try that have been passed down from countless generations of angry Asians before me. Passive aggression is always welcome. Regular scream “I WISH YOU HAD NEVER BEEN BORN” will help keep your own kid’s self-respect in check. But whatever happens, ensure you earn enough money in your adult life. Then give it to me, so I can go on expensive international tours. If you do this I promise I’ll stop complaining and leave you alone, because we both know that’s what we really want.
Love you lots, Cutie-Pie.
Daddy

2 . It's the last year of high school, and young minds are turning their attention to the thought of leaving home. This seems a natural progression: parents have children; raise children; children graduate from high school and flee far from parents, returning on weekends to eat home-cooked meals. But what happens when a child loses home right before leaving?
My family has lived in my home since I was two years old. Seventeen years later, as I got ready to leave for university, my parents decided that it was time to move. And naturally, I panicked. This was the place I used to run around with friends; where I got sunburned, chasing ants with sidewalk chalk; where I would sit for hours staring out, making up songs about the passersby. If we were to move, the new house wouldn't be my home at all, just a strange, new place. After all, I'd be moving out to go to university. But something still wasn't quite right.
And then it hit me: this is what the move was really about. I wasn't concerned with losing my childhood bedroom. What was bothering me was that I'd soon be completely responsible for myself.
When I do go to university, I'll go without a safe place to come home to. Of course I'll have my family's love and support, but 'll never be able to go home again.
As graduating high-school students,we're all in love with the idea of going away and having wild adventures if we always have someplace to return to. Leaving the family home behind is really just growing up without a safety net. The move from one place in life to another is an important change.Because it's true, you can never go home. Not really, however. Once you've had an adventure or two, you will still have a nice place to come back to for a nice visit

You didn't carry me inside you,or give birth to me. Yet our connection as mother and daughter is just as deep, maybe even deeper,as it would have been if we'd had a physical connection.
Even though I’m in my twenties now,we still celebrate my "special day" every June; the anniversary of the date that I legally became your daughter, and was brought from my home to live with you and.Dad.It's a date that I never want to forget, because it marked the beginning of our lives together as a family.
I was just nine weeks old when I was given up by my birth mother. I don't know much about her, only that she wanted me to grow up in a proper family, with a better life than she could give me.I'm certain that I've had every opportunity in life that my birth mother would have dreamed for me. You paid for me to go to a private school, and encouraged me to study hard and to go on to university. When I was a teenager. You were my taxi driver, encouraging me to diving competitions and cheering me on from the sidelines.
Every year we took family holidays. As an only child, because you and Dad understandably didn't want to put yourselves through the difficult adoption process again, I was always spoiled with toys, and so much attention.
Probably the greatest gift that you've ever given me was to feel proud about being adopted. It was never kept a secret in our house and you were always very open about how I’d come to be your daughter.
You're my mother in all the ways that really matter, Mum. When I'm stressed with work, or heartbroken over a failed relationship. It's you I call. When I'm sick, you'll drive to my flat to look after me, when I have something to celebrate, we'll go out together. You're my best friend,Mum.
Love, Hannah

7 . When I was in my first year of high school, I had a terrible time when every area of my life was a disaster. I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible.
On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he'd walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice: “Whatever is wrong will pass. You're going to be OK, just hang on.” He then smiled again and walked away.
I can't explain the effect of that man's unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I'd lost completely—hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again.
That was thirty years ago. And I've never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy, or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything. If you keep your head up, your heart will show you the place that needs hope.
