文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了一直关注自己的缺点可能会阻止我们与他人交朋友。因此我们应该自信,这样才能让别人喜欢自己。

3 . Many of us mistakenly believe that it’s wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self-criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?

If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn’t like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.

Don’t take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else.

You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don’t have much money and you don’t drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don’t have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person.

The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it’s the reason why you do not have friends and cannot make any.

1. According to the author, ________ plays an important role in making friends.
A.possessing good qualitiesB.confidence
C.admitting your shortcomingsD.self-criticism
2. If you are not liked by a person, ________.
A.you may not be the one to be blamed
B.you and that person misunderstand each other
C.you should find the reason in yourself
D.you’d better talk with the person face to face
3. We can learn from the third paragraph that ________.
A.your good qualities may turn out to be your flaws
B.your negative qualities cause a person to reject you
C.your weaknesses may also be your strengths in some way
D.you’ll have few friends if your flaws are bigger than your good qualities
4. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write?
A.How to lose weight.B.How to make friends.
C.How to make self-criticism.D.How to find your good qualities.

5 . Susan Casado felt well prepared to have a birthday party of 15 to 20 guests for her son, Shemy, who celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday. But after none of the boy’s friends arrived, she never expected she’d be hosting nearly 100 surprise guests at her home.

Susan tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she was disappointed when her brother was the only person to show up at the party at first. After seeing that she had tears in her eyes, however, Shemy’s uncle connected with a local Facebook group to call for more people to join the celebration. Moments later, a woman arrived at Susan’s home asking for the birthday boy, although the family had never met her before.

As people continued to arrive, the mother realized that her brother had something to do with it, and was then shown a Facebook post that he made to advertise the party.

After more unexpected guests continued to arrive, however, Susan began to worry about the amount of food that she had prepared. “I felt so embarrassed,” she explains. But guests didn’t care about the food and drinks. Instead, they told the birthday boy’s mother that they were there to “make Shemy’s day”, which even got better once the guests of honor arrived from St. Johas County Fire Rescue.

“My first thought was,” Is everybody okay? Is anybody hurt? And then they said, “We’re coming here to say happy birthday to Shemy, Susan says, ”They said, We brought you a big toy, we brought you a fire truck.”

Susan went on to explain that although Shemy has Down’s syndrome (唐氏综合症) and isn’t able to say much, he does express his happiness with laughter and hugs.” He hugs when he feels happy, so when people came in to meet him, we took pictures together and he hugged them. This is the way that he says thank you.”

When Susan asked her brother why he went through the extra effort to make sure that his nephew’s party was amazing, she says that he told her, “He should have a good birthday.” As for the firefighters who attended, they told the family that it’s all part of the job. One of the firefighters, Jeremy Robshaw, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that they just wanted to “bring a smile” to Shemy’s face.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者母亲去世之后,作者对母亲的回忆及母亲赐予作者的力量,使他能够从悲伤中走出来,积极面对生活。

6 . It was a week after my mom had passed away and I didn’t know how to go on with life. So when I received an email from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed to prick my heart, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.

But something about my friend’s words—“I can help organize the whole thing”—stuck with me. I felt obliged(有义务的)to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team’s website daily, feeling proud each time a donation ticked up our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.

When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.

So I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last. I followed it religiously and didn’t let anything get in my way.

Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.

I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis of cancer. “I don’t want you to feel guilty about anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.

When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on.

Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.
1. Why did the author ignore the email in the beginning?
A.She felt it hard to finish the race.
B.She had no time to join in the event.
C.She thought the research meaningless.
D.She was reminded of her mother’s death.
2. What mainly helped the author recover from her mom’s death?
A.The company of her friends.B.The inspiration from her mom.
C.The pleasure in going for a run.D.The success in organizing an event.
3. Which of the words can best describe the author’s mom?
A.Considerate and polite.B.Brave and humorous.
C.Strong-willed and caring.D.Outgoing and patient.
4. What might be the best title for the passage?
A.How I Got Healed in RunningB.The Loss of Sweet Memories
C.What Matters Most in RunningD.The Rewards of Great Friendship

8 . Lillian Hanson, a college junior, expects to graduate in about two years. Mrs. Hanson, a rather unusual student, plans to go on to take more courses after she gets her degree. What makes Mrs. Hanson different from most of her classmates?

What sets Lillian Hanson apart from the college crowd is her age-73 years. She has been going to college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years.

When Mrs. Hanson graduated from high school, she went to her local bank and asked for a loan for college tuition and fees. The banker gave her no encouragement. He didn’t think that a country girl should be borrowing money to go to college. He thought she should be home doing work in the house or around the farm. So Mrs. Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college. She still lives with her husband on the farm that has been in the family for five generations.

Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education. When her children were grown up, she tried again.

She finds the hardest part of going back to school at her age to be sitting in class for long periods of time. Because she is not able to move as quickly and easily as she used to be, Mrs. Hanson often gets up and walks around between classes to keep from getting rigid. At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students all stood up to give Mrs. Hanson big applause when she introduced herself and explained why she was there and what her goals were.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讨论了孩子要不要在社交网站上加父母为好友。

9 . To Friend or Not to Friend

We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversation you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways (走廊), so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?

In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.

These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated(侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member,

It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand, we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make the feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.

A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request, “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”

Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.

1. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean?
A.students may log in micro-blog on school
B.students can find pictures of hallways on micro-blog
C.schools begin to build their hallways on the Internet
D.students begin to communicate on some websites
2. From Paragraph 2, we learn that       .
A.parents feel secure about their privacy online
B.social networks successfully fill the generation gap
C.social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate
D.parents have realized the importance of social networks
3. Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because       .
A.they hide something from their parents
B.they are unwilling to be watched by parents
C.their parents tend to fall behind in technology
D.their parents make negative comments on them
4. What is the passage is written mainly for?
A.teenagersB.parentsC.teachersD.researchers

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。智能手机时代人们和朋友们的电话交流少了,作者和丈夫决定给一些老朋友打电话,进行更多的交流。通过本文作者提醒我们要用手机和朋友多联系。

10 . It’s a Saturday night, the kids are asleep and we have no plans. Before we fall into our routine and watch a movie, I try to talk my husband into playing a card game. Unconvinced, he continues tapping away on his phone. But just before disappearing into the social media rabbit hole, he has an idea. He looks over me and suggests, “Why don’t we try calling one of our friends?”

I look at him with raised brows, as if his suggestion is somewhat ridiculous and perhaps even socially unacceptable. You can’t just call someone out of the blue now…right? But then I think again and realize that at one point in time, in the not so distant past, this was the norm. I spent my early teenage years connecting with friends through a phone that was connected to a wall. It wasn’t “smart”, but it allowed me to keep in touch with the latest gossip and news. We would chat for hours, sometimes while I hid under my blanket in order to avoid the chance of being caught by my parents.

I could even memorize the phone numbers of loved ones then. While I did own an address book—and there was always the White Pages, where you could look people up by their names—I had the contact details of special friends, first loves and family members committed to memory. I guess these days, they would be on my “Favorites” list in my smartphone.

Today, many of my “favorite” people are followed from a distance through social media, and even they very rarely—if ever—would get an actual call from me. The birth announcement by my oldest friend is received through catching a well-defined bump into a photo that I scroll past. The news of a divorce from a couple whom I had considered my second parents when I was in middle school arrives after a photo of a woman led me on a quest for more gossip. Bits of such information, a collection of wonderful, exciting, shocking and also boring news, may have been a part of my digital feed for years. The idea of actually picking up the phone to reconnect with a long-lost friend is an intimidating one—even seeing the name of an old friend pop up in an incoming call can feel a little afraid.

I ask my husband, “Who would we call?” After tossing around a few names, we agree on some potential candidates—people whose lives have taken them in different directions, but with whom we still share deep friendships.

1. How does the author feel about her husband’s suggestion at first?
A.Surprised.B.Motivated.C.Nervous.D.Excited.
2. With the phone, the author’s teenage years was________.
A.difficult but interestingB.peaceful and meaningful
C.pleasant and unforgettableD.inconvenient but enjoyable
3. In the following days, the couple may ________.
A.share more of their private information with others
B.contact more long-lost friends through social media
C.have more personal communications with their friends
D.add more friends’ names to the contact lists in their phones
4. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To argue for the need of the contact of long-lost friends.
B.To remind us to turn to phones to keep in touch with friends
C.To tell us about one of her unforgettable experience.
D.To persuade us to follow our friends through the social media.
