1 . One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap (包装).
On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honour! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it.Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming. “Don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room.“If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say, “What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”
“Thank God!” I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!

Vicky was a first-grader in a primary school, but she was not happy there. As her parents wanted to cheer her up, they sent her to start her second grade in a school nearby. She was very happy and wanted to make new friends. But she made a mistake. She wanted to be so popular that she joined a group of students at school, but not in the right way.
Jenny, who was nice at the beginning, became Vicky’s best friend. But Vicky didn’t realize that by joining up with her, she would suffer a lot later.
Jenny always acted in a proud and unpleasant way, showing little thought for others. She didn’t want Vicky to have other friends. Jenny also enjoyed talking about others’ private lives. Vicky started to change as soon as she met Jenny. Her personality was not as sweet as before.
Time went by slowly. Vicky’s marks began to go down. Things got even worse. She hardly had any friends and she didn’t care about her friends, either. She always talked to her classmates in an impolite way instead of being nice.
After all that suffering, the day arrived when one of her classmates told her that Jenny was not going to be in the school next year as she was moving. Vicky said nothing but didn’t believe it.
However, on the last day at school Jenny told Vicky that she was leaving. Instead of having a happy parting, Jenny told her that she never felt that Vicky was her true friend.
Vicky was shocked when she heard the news and started crying. When the summer holiday was over, Vicky went back to school, telling herself that all the bad times she had suffered last year with Jenny were over, too. But she found out that her classmates hadn’t forgotten her bad acts.

I was eight years old when I first experienced the feeling of guilt. Then I had three close friends, David, Kyle and Richard, and I could rely on them for anything. We did everything together, from playing four square and handball at break, to eating lunch at our own spot. We hung out every second we could.
It was a Wednesday at school, and that morning I didn’t have breakfast. My stomach growled (咆哮) every 10 minutes louder and louder. I felt like the whole class could hear my stomach. I constantly stared at the clock go tick tock, tick tock for hours. As soon as the bell rang for lunch, our teacher led the line to the dining hall, but when I checked my pockets to see if I brought my money, I only had a dollar. I was angry that I left my money at home and desperate to have lunch. So, I quickly asked my teacher to use the restroom, ran up the stairs to see all the backpacks hung up against the wall and saw my friend Richard’s bag.
I looked around to see if anyone was near and found no one was in sight. As I opened the bag and saw a whole bag of coins, I decided to take eight of them. Then I bought my lunch and carried on through the day like nothing had happened.
When school was over, Jamba Juice came to sell smoothies (冰沙). I had totally forgotten once a month on Wednesdays Jamba Juice would sell smoothies for five dollars. I was already satisfied with the lunch, and didn’t even bother caring for a smoothie. Everyone wanted a smoothie and the whole school and their parents were in the line waiting.

Grandma Liang goes to see her granddaughters every Saturday afternoon. Each time, Grandma Liang brings wonderful gifts: either toys or candies. Her granddaughters, Vera and Gina, are expecting for her visiting.
One Saturday afternoon when Grandma Liang rang the doorbell, Vera and Gina hurried to answer the door. Seeing Grandma Liang brought a pack o fcards, they were glad with joy. They enjoyed themselves so much that thewhole afternoon had passed before they knew it.
At the end of the day, Grandma Liang had dinner with the family. During the dinner, Vera and Gina heard that next Saturday would be Grandma’s birthday, and Mom and Dad would hold a birthday party for her.
They looked at each other secretly and left the dinning hall immediately. ”We have to do something for Grandma’s birthday, Gina decided. “But what?” asked Vera. They thought over and over, but nothing came into their mind.
Then Mom Nancy found them two missing and came to their room to see what had happened. When she entered their room, she found them downhearted. “What’s wrong with you? What makes you two so down and quiet?” asked Nancy.
“Mom, we really wanted to give Grandma something special for her birthday,” Gina said. “But nothing we thought of would do,” added Vera. Hearing that, Grandma Liang came in and held the kids in her arms, saying, “Oh, kids, don’t you know you two are the best gifts I could ever ask for?”

In the fifth grade, my deskmate was Mia, a shy but clever girl. Being too shy to raise her hand even when she knew the answer, she didn’t participate in class actively. But I did admire her. I tried to draw her attention, in a rude and stupid way.
One day, I hid her pencil case somewhere in the classroom. When the bell rang, announcing the end of the day, she began to gather her things. Soon, she found her pencil box was gone. She opened her desk drawer: it was not there. She reached into her schoolbag but found nothing. Then she stole a glance at me. I grinned (咧嘴笑) at her, hoping she would enquire of me and then I would get the pencil case out, and then we would talk and laugh happily together. To my surprise, she just lowered her eyes, grabbed her schoolbag, and left without a word.
I kept playing these small but annoying jokes on Mia, thinking Mia would, one day, notice how funny a girl I was, without realizing that she was extremely uneasy.
I escalated (升级) my daily“annoyance”to something bigger on a sunny afternoon, when I happened to get some itching powder (痒痒粉).
I tried it on myself. Feeling a sharp, burning pain, I couldn’t help screaming, which aroused a big laugh from people who didn’t know what was happening. Then it suddenly struck me: Why not share it with Mia? She would know how“interesting”it was. Of course, I would do it in a “joking” way.
So, after the math class, during the break, I slipped behind her and threw a handful of itching powder down her back. Mia jumped up and screamed loudly. So loud and frightened was she that even I myself realized, for the first time, that I did something terribly wrong.

10 . Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son. Suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (依偎) against me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is understanding which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their mind. “In fact, parents are first on the list,” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental (思想的) break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
