I had pulled another all-nighter and then spent a full day at the office. I just came home and had only twenty minutes before my three girls came jumping through the door, full of stories, requests and homework demands that would keep me on my toes until their bedtime. And, in those twenty minutes, I had to tidy up our house, return several phone calls, and cook dinner. I felt a headache coming on.
Our company was small, which meant a lot of work on my shoulders. I felt like I was spending so much time and energy on my work that it was hard to cheer up the enthusiasm (热情) for my children.
“Mommy! Mommy! You’re never going to believe what happened in school today!” There they were. My twenty minutes were over, and I hadn’t started on dinner. I put on my best cheerful voice as I greeted them, hoping they wouldn’t notice the effort it took to put cheer into my greeting. And so the evening went on in a blur (模糊) of dinner and homework, quarrelling and bath time. I nodded off on the couch three times in the middle of homework, much to my oldest daughter’s anger. And I responded impatiently, “Yes, sure,” when my four-year-old asked me how many miles away we were from the sun. I think I did okay otherwise, although I don’t remember all the details on account of my extreme exhaustion. I tried to give my all to my children, but after the day that I had had at work, I’m afraid my all wasn’t all that much.
After finally guiding the last one successfully into bed, I was back at the computer to work for just a couple of hours before heading to bed myself. I opened my e-mails to find a message containing the quote (引文) for the following week’s issue. I read the quote, moving back as if I had been physically hit. The quote read: “Our children deserve (值得) the best of us, not the rest of us.”

I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the center of a group of boys, talking and laughing. He was a cute boy known in the class for his kindness and generosity. My name is Daniel, a new boy in the class. Our whole family had moved from the north of England because of my father being offered a job here. I lost all my old friends and felt lonely at my new school.
Most students in my new class weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.
But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked over by a car, who died a few days later. His family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Roy changed completely, becoming silent and moody, who seemed to lose all interest in his work. These days, Roy and I saw each other from time to time, but we were no longer close.
Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about f500.Our class teacher, Mr. White, came and chatted to a group of us that included Roy, and held up a box for us to see. There’s£500 in here,” he said with a smile.
Having left something in the classroom, I went inside to get it, and found Roy holding a wallet in his hand. Seeing me, he walked out without saying a word. The next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. Mr. White had left the box in the classroom for a few minutes, but when he came back it had disappeared.
This weekend morning, having thought about the situation for a while, I decided to ask Roy about the the theft and went to see him.

There are a lot of respectable people around us. They may be our teachers or parents. As for me, my father is the person I respect mostly. My father is a teacher, whom loves his works and students very much.

9 . When I was in the fifth grade, my teachers first discovered that I could not even read the first grade books. They didn’t think this kind of problem could happen to me since my father was a famous scientist. My parents sent me to experts, trying to find out what the problem was. My IQ was high, but I had severe problems in learning. They discovered that I was dyslexic (诵读困难的). I was lucky that my parents cared enough to find a way out for me.
When my parents went to Ford Country Day School and sat down with Brent, a teacher in the school, he agreed to help without thinking twice. My family was not rich and I was allowed to go to school free of charge because my mother drove some students to school in the morning in her car. I do know, however, without Brent reaching out to my family, my life would have taken a turn for the worst. Brent and my parents decided to have me retake the fifth grade in the next school year.
I was afraid of going to school with my difficulties in learning, but Brent’s kind and loving support helped me slowly learn to grow and overcome my learning disability. Ford Country Day School has become the most important turning point in my life. The foundation that Brent gave me has in many ways set my direction in life.
I went to Japan to live with my brother for one year right out of Ford Country Day School. I was in an international school in Tokyo. If I had not had the experience in Ford Country Day School, I would not have been able to survive in Japan. I count myself as one of the truly lucky people having been touched by Brent’s caring and love.
