Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.

While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow was in Mama’s daisy patch (雏菊地).
I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. “Why can’t you stay in the field?” she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.
Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, “When I grew up, I’ll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I’ll never own a cow. Too much trouble.” In truth, even at her tender age, Taylor showed promise as a little painter. It was moments like these that fueled Taylor’s dreams of becoming an artist.
Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk’s collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.
She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).
Mama came out of the house. “What’s going on?” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
“I forgot to lock the gate,” Taylor said. “I’m so sorry.”
“I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”
Taylor’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

3 . It’s dinner time. Susan Green sets the table. Her husband Michael and two children take their seats at the table, and an awkward silence descends (降临). 14-year-old Carolyn plays restlessly with a fork, while 16-year-old Billy frowns(皱眉) at the dish in front of him. Meanwhile, Michael reaches absently for an object that isn’t there, an unmistakable look of disappointment on his face. The Greens are experiencing their first evening without electronic devices (电子设备 ), as part of a month-long experiment to see if going without technology will make them a happier family.
The use of electronic devices has increased greatly over the past 10 years, and recent studies suggest that they may be responsible for decreased levels of happiness. Susan Green had noticed these worrying tendencies in her own family. “I was often telling Billy to turn off his game and go and get some fresh air, or Carolyn to stop chatting with her friends and get some sleep. What worried me more is that when they invited their friends over, I would find them all sitting together looking at their phones and not talking,” she says.
Susan’s concerns made her carry out her own research into the issue. When she came across an article in a weekend newspaper about people who gave up using electronic devices for a month, she was eager to try it with her own family. However, she realised that it was going to take more than reading an article to persuade them. “I found some of the research mentioned in the article very worrying, but I doubted if my family would be convinced, ” she says. “But I wanted to avoid financial rewards(金钱奖励), as they felt a bit too individualistic.” In the end, the promise of a fun family day out at a theme park persuaded the Greens to go tech-free for a whole month.
The Green family’s experiment is now over, but they have made a promise to try and stick to some of the rules that they established during their tech-free month. Susan feels delighted with the results of the experiment and is certain that it helped her to achieve her aim of improving her family’s happiness.

A Father’s Day Surprise
“Mano, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Ali asked his sister.
“Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 19 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it.” Mano replied.
“Do you have any idea how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Ali asked.
“Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas.” Mano answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room.
“Mum, we were wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day.” Mano said.
“Oh, I am surprised you kids remembered! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully.”Mum said.
“That would be great!”said Mano and Ali together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Mano and Ali started doing their homework. But soon Ali noticed Mano deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Ali, I was thinking that our parents do everything for us and in return they want nothing. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Mano replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades.” Ali nodded.
The next day, all three of them, Mano, Ali and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of Bowers. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother reading stories to me. When I was old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
