文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了作者受到祖父花园的启发,决定着手种植一些植物,最终种植蔬菜成功了。

1 . Growing up, I was always fortunate to be around my grandfather’s well-cared garden. Not only was it a nice garden in the visual sense, but the vegetables and fruit that he grew in it were also often on the dinner table, so it was also a very practical garden. This was a result of the times. He and millions others grew up in difficult time during 1930s, in which vegetables grown in gardens helped people add their poor incomes.

I had just been an admirer of the work done by him until quite recently, when I decided to turn my hand to growing some plants. Unlike my grandfather, I don’t have a large garden to do this. Like millions of other people, I only have a small balcony to conduct my planting activities, but that has not discouraged me in the slightest.

It’s possible to make a nice “garden” even in the most limited space, but not everyone could be successful. I had already tried to grow some flowers, but it was a hopeless failure, so my attention and efforts then turned to something much more practical: vegetables. I decided to take the seeds of one little tomato and plant them in a number of pots. After several weeks, I was amazed by the results. I now have about 15 tomato plants on my balcony in different stages of growth.

It’s a rewarding sight to see this greenery on my balcony. Not only does it look nice, it’s also a good feeling that I have made my own little contribution to nature. And in this day and age in which we have such fast-paced lives and depend on modern technology for so much, it’s very rewarding to be taking part in a practice which is as old as time itself, as plant life is the most basic and oldest “technology” on our planet. Even if you don’t consider yourself to have “green fingers”, it is something that’s well worth having a try of —— you could be amazed by the results.

1. What did the author think of his grandfather’s garden?
A.Beautiful and usefulB.Boring and difficult.
C.Broken and impractical.D.Attractive and welcome
2. How about the planting in author’s limited space according to paragraph 3?
A.A complete failure for the lack of a large garden
B.All vegetables grew better than flowers on the balcony
C.Flowers were more practical compared with vegetables.
D.Vegetables’ planting was more successful than flowers
3. What do the underlined words “green fingers” mean in the last paragraph?
A.The ability to make plants growB.A big balcony to grow green plants.
C.The skills to master modern technology.D.Greenery on our balcony
4. What does the author suggest people to do according to the passage!
A.Get used to the fast-paced lifeB.Actively apply modern technology.
C.Build a large enough balcony.D.Contribute to nature by planting.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了一对父母给孩子转学的过程。这对父母通过与孩子开诚布公地交谈,分析孩子转学前后的情况,让孩子参与到决策中来。

5 . This July my husband and I decided to move both our kids, aged 14 and 10, from their previous schools to a new international school that’s located in our neighborhood. It wasn’t an easy decision. We knew switching(改变)schools would be a challenge for our kids.

Put two kids in the same situation and they react and feel differently. Nina, outgoing and talkative, has no problem making new friends and adjusting to (适应) the new school. It took her less than a week to say, “This school is great. I like it.” Everywhere she goes, she’s surrounded by friends.

While it took Michael months to say, “I guess this is fine.” Before that, he complained about everything. He’s sensitive and quite hard on himself. Words of encouragement need to be told on a daily basis.

To make our children comfortable before, during, and after the move, we included them in our plan from the beginning. They’re big enough to take part in decision-making activities. We researched, compared, and asked questions. We listed everything about their old schools and the new one, and we discussed every item. We were open with them from the start. Our kids knew what was going on and what was about to happen. They had time to prepare themselves. They trusted us.

Communicating with their new teachers was also important. For the first three months, we kept an eye on our children’s academic (学业的) performance and their school life. If we discovered a drop in their grades or any unusual behavior, we were quick to arrange appointments with their teachers.

We don’t aim to be helicopter parents, but it doesn’t mean we let them go completely. Balancing this role is hard- -the older the kid, the harder it gets- but it’s not impossible. The key is to listen first, and act second.

1. Why were the children probably moved into a new school?
A.The old school is not good enough.
B.They wanted to make more new friends.
C.The new school is conveniently located near their home.
D.The outgoing child can help the shy one in the same school.
2. How did the parents help the children deal with switching schools?
A.By tolerating their behavior in school.
B.By choosing the best teachers for them.
C.By encouraging them to enjoy social life.
D.By having open communication with them.
3. What might the underlined phrase“helicopter parents”in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Parents who send their children to school in person.
B.Parents who pay very close attention to their children.
C.Parents who talk too much rather than take action.
D.Parents who listen to their children all the time.
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Parents should prepare children for decisions.
B.Children can adapt to a new school quite easily.
C.Children should listen to their parents when making decisions.
D.Parents should communicate with children about their performance.

8 . I was with my mom one day as we took a walk while window shopping. We both knew we wouldn’t be buying much.

I remember I was looking up at the people we walked by. Ladies wore five-inch heels and bright clothing. Men wore expensive scents(香水)and creams that might wipe away the wrinkles (皱纹) on their faces. An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. I could deny it no longer; I was ashamed of my mother.

We were in a high-class neighborhood-I knew that. We lived in a small, overpriced apartment building at the edge of our county. Mom chose to move there because she knew the schools were good. I realized for the first time that we didn’t belong there.

I could see the heavy lines around mom’s eyes and mouth. She wore cheap clothes and worn-out shoes. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make ends meet, and her hair was too gray for her age.

My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment, she stood out because she was just so plain. I didn’ t want to be seen with her, although there was no one important around to see me anyway. I felt embarrassed about being at her side.

We were standing in the middle of a high-end store, and mom was holding a sweater. She said, “This will look good on you. Do you want it?” It was much too expensive, but I almost thoughtlessly answered “yes”. Then I took a closer look at the small, tired woman with a big smile and a sweater in her hands, happy to be giving me something so nice. My words died in my throat.

Her clothes were worn and old because she spent her money buying me new ones. She looked so tired because she was busy working to provide for me. She didn’t wear jewelry or perfume because she was content with spending what little money she had on me.

Suddenly, my mom was beautiful and extraordinarily wonderful in my eyes.

I was no longer ashamed of her, but of myself.

“Do you want it?” my mom repeated.

“No, thanks,” I said.

1. Why did the author describe the passersby while window shopping?
A.To show her envy toward rich people.
B.To express her curiosity about others.
C.To explain the current fashion trends.
D.To highlight her mother’s plainness.
2. What most likely made the author feel uneasy?
A.The feeling of being uncomfortable in high-end stores.
B.The feeling of not belonging in the neighborhood.
C.The feeling of being embarrassed about her mom.
D.The feeling of being ashamed of herself.
3. Why did the author’s words “die in her throat”?
A.She was too tired to talk.
B.She didn’t want the sweater.
C.She was upset with her mom.
D.She realized the sacrifices her mom had made.
4. How would the author probably feel about her earlier attitude toward her mom?
A.Pleased.
B.Regretful.
C.Indifferent.
D.Understanding.

9 . Raising teenagers can be both difficult and rewarding(有回报的). They are becoming young adults. Almost all teenagers will have some behavioral outbursts(爆发) with their families during this period of life.     1     Here are some ideas that may create positive(积极的) experiences for teens and parents.

Have meals together. Mealtime is when we check in with each other.     2     Eating meals together offers a way for parents and kids to share what is on their minds. It brings families closer by creating trust and understanding to help guide children through the challenges of the teen years.

3     As teens develop their own sense of independence, it gets harder to find time to talk. Talk in the car together, when doing dishes together, or any time you have a chance. Remember that no matter how big their problems seem, what most teens want is love and support. Help them connect with their families and communities. During these years, help teens learn that their words and actions mater.     4     Others may find connection through spiritual communities or from having more responsibilities at home. Connecting with families and communities also helps keep teens safe from riskier activity.

Find time to have fun together! What do you both enjoy? Playing chess? Going to the ballet? Volunteering in your community? Take time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company.
