2 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文,

There is no way they just drove into that water, thought Corion Evans. The 16-year-old was hanging out with his friend in a parking area underneath a Moss Point Mississippi, highway in July when a car with three teenage girls inside drove off a boat ramp(斜坡)and into the Pascagoula River. It came to rest some 20 feet from land and then sank. “The driver of the car”, Evans thought, must have blindly followed wrong directions from her GPS.

It was around 2:30 a.m. by the time Evans and his friend Karon Bradley got to the river’s edge. In the darkness they could hardly make out the girls holding tightly to the roof, the only part of the car still, barely, above water. But they could hear screaming.

Evans took off his shirt and shoes, threw his phone down, and then dived into the water, a river he knew alligators(短吻鳄)called home. He helped the first girl he saw and, keeping her head above water led her ashore.

Just then, a man called out. Police Officer Garry Mercer had arrived. He dived into the river to help another of the girls. But halfway back to shore she panicked and went underwater. pulling Mercer down with her. Evans jumped back into the water and helped them until they could stand. “If he hadn’t been there, who knows?” Mercer told the Washington Post.

There was still one girl in the water. Cora Watson, 19, could not swim. She was drinking water, struggling to stay afloat. And scared.

5 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Orkut are now estimated to have more than 700 million users worldwide. As users can create any profile of themselves they choose, you might expect them to portray themselves in the best possible way. When putting up a profile, it would be reasonable for them to present positive images, choose classy interests, and carefully express their thoughts so as to appear more intelligent than in real life. But according to recent research, this is not the case. Far from presenting themselves in a pleasing way, most users’ profiles reflect their true personalities, and reveal both psychological and natural physical weaknesses.

Research was carried out on 250 Facebook users who filled in a personality questionnaire. Results were compared with the same people’s Facebook profiles. The survey set out to assess not only the participants’ actual personality, but their “ideal” personality--in other words, what kind of person they would be if they actually possessed all their ideal characteristics. These results were then compared with the participants’ Facebook profiles. What emerged was astonishing: far from being idealized versions of themselves, people’s online profiles roughly resemble what they were really like. Their profiles accurately reflected how agreeable, outgoing, hardworking and sociable they were in real life.

It’s not entirely clear why online profiles display users’ personalities so accurately. It could be that users want to portray themselves as they really are, or it could be that people attempt to present an ideal image of themselves but in fact fail to do so. One thing seems clear: social networking sites can in no way be considered a false online world that is idealized and removed from reality; rather, they are simply another way in which people choose to interact with each other.

6 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.

It’s not piano lessons or dance classes. Nowadays, the biggest extra-curricular activity is going to a tutor. “I spend about 800 Canadian dollars a month on tutors. It’s costly,” says Pat, a mother in Canada. However, she adds, “After finding out half my daughter’s class had tutors, I felt like my child was going to fall behind because everyone else seemed to be ahead.”

Shelley, a mother of three, also has tutors constantly coming in and out of her home. “When I used to sit down with my children, it was hard to get them focused. I was always yelling. When I got a tutor once a week, they became focused for one entire hour and could get most of their homework done.”

Tutoring isn’t simply a private school phenomenon. Nor is it geared only toward lower-achieving students. In Canada alone, seven per cent of high school students reported using a tutor in 2010. That increased to 15 per cent last year.

Overall, parents hire tutors because they are worried schools are not meeting their expectations, but there is also a cultural shift. A special value is placed on education in Asia, where tutoring is viewed as an extension of the school day. As a large number of Asians emigrated to the West over the recent years, their attitudes towards education have had an impact.

Another reason for the growth in business is parental frustration and their packed schedules. “A lot of parents just don’t have time to help their children with homework,” says Julie Diamond, president of an American tutoring company. “Others couldn’t help their children after Grade 3.”

There has been a shift in the attitudes, too. “Children used to get bullied (欺侮) for having a tutor, ” Diamond says, “Now it’s becoming the norm to have one. ”

Children don’t seem to mind that they have a tutor. One parent feels surprised that so many of her child’s classmates have tutors. “For the amount we pay in tuition, they should have as much extra help as they need,” she says. Still, she’s now thinking of getting a tutor. Why Her daughter has actually asked for one?

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

A television can be found in almost every home. At present, we cannot imagine a life without a television. People at different ages watch them. Children watch cartoons, adults watch news and movies and old people watch family TV plays. However, the question about whether it has good or bad effects on children has been in heated discussion for a long time. Televisions contain various kinds of content. There is no doubt that there are both advantages and disadvantages of children’s watching television.

Of course, watching television can be good for children. It can give them a broader window to the world. For example, their information about the world can be updated by watching news. They can know about the important things which take place in the world every day. For the children who don’t go to school, watching educational programmes or cartoons provides them with basic education such as alphabet and colour. Besides, it teaches them good behaviour, such as being honest and respecting parents.

On the other hand, televisions can have a negative influence on children. There is a great amount of violence on television. The violence is often “glorified (美化的)” and made to look both exciting and rewarding. Children tend to copy the behaviour of the characters on television and act as they do. A lot of studies have shown that watching violence on television has led to an increase in crimes, especially those committed by children. Needless to say, this influence has serious negative effects on society as a whole.

Finally, effects of watching television on children differ. To some children, they can be useful. But to the others, they can be harmful. This is why movies in the United States have had ratings (等级评定) to help guide parents as to which movies should not be seen by their children. Parents should allow their children to watch beneficial programmes only.
