Grandpa’s Bee
A long time before I was born, my grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family of 4 little girls. On weekend they dug a garden to grow some of their own food.
Everybody worked to keep the garden growing. All summer long, the family ate food from the garden and enjoyed the beautiful flowers. Grandma put up strawberry jam, tomatoes, beans, peppers, pears and peaches in canning jam. They were good to eat through the long winter.
Grandchildren grow up, and grandparents grow older. It became harder for Grandma and Grandpa to keep up the garden. So they made it a little smaller. There was still plenty to eat from the garden and lovely flowers to enjoy.
Then one summer when Grandpa was eighty-nine years old, all he could do was watch from his lawn chair as the vegetables grew and the roses bloomed. Summer slowly faded, and Grandpa died before it was time to bring in the harvest.
It was a lonely winter for Grandma. She sat near the window, looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring. It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came, she planted only a little garden.
One sunny day in the early summer, Grandma heard a commotion(喧闹) in the front yard and looked out the window to see a frightening sight—a large group of bees filled the air between two tall trees. There was thousands of bees in the air, so many that the group reached the tree-tops! The buzzing sound was disturbing(令人烦恼的). Grandma watched as the bees made their way into a hole up in one of the trees. Before long, every one of those bees had disappeared into its new home.

3 . Last November, a kindergarten teacher, Robin Hughes, read her class a book about snow. The students listened closely. But Hughes noticed that some children looked puzzled because only a couple of kids had seen snow.
Hughes decided to call in a favour to her sister, Amber Estes. “Would you be willing to ship a snowman to us if it snows?” Hughes called. Estes laughed it off and agreed, as Hughes always shared some uncommon ideas with her. A few days later, her neighbourhood got nearly 10 inches of snow. So, she walked out into the snow and built “Lucky”, a small snowman with blueberry eyes, a carrot nose.
After about 10 days of refrigeration and planning, Lucky was on a nearly 800-mile flight from Kentucky to Florida. Estes mailed Lucky in an insulated (绝缘) container filled with ice packs. “If Lucky arrived in one piece, the plan was for him to keep his name,” Estes said. “If the experiment failed, he would be renamed Puddles (水坑).” That night, Estes stayed up late tracking the package.
On January 19, a postal driver delivered the snowman to the school. Hughes cut the box open before she presented the snowman to her students. To her surprise, Lucky had arrived almost whole. “I was so excited because he made it,” said Hughes. “All the children wanted to touch him. They asked if he is coming to life.” Ever since, at least twice a day, Hughes said she brings Lucky out from the cafeteria freezer so students can touch the snowman and ask questions. Cheers and wows fill the room every time Lucky is brought in. When his coat starts to get shiny, she takes him back to the freezer.
This year, things are not normal for kids in the classroom or for adults, she said. “This little snowman has created happiness.” Hughes plans to melt Lucky before Earth Day and will use the water while planting a garden at the school.

6 . Since being introduced to chess at the age of six, Tanitoluwa “Tani” Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world’s youngest-ever Grandmaster—the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12.
To work for his goal, the gifted chess player practiced for up to 11 hours every day after school. On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani became the newest national chess master of the United States. The title, awarded by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. Tani achieved a rating of 2223 by defeating two chess experts, a master, and an international master. Tani said the secret to his success was thinking of his plays ahead of time.
The now fifth-grader first knew and fell in love with chess in 2017 after being exposed to the basics by a part-time teacher at school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother, Oluwatoyin, didn’t let him join the school’s chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four, who were living in a homeless shelter, did not have extra money to spare. When Oluwatoyin explained the family’s situation to the chess club’s instructor, Russell Makofsky, he instantly cancelled all costs for the young boy.
Tani did not disappoint those who supported him. Over less than a year after joining the club, he had garnered seven trophies(奖杯)and was ranked 27 in his age category. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he defeated 73 competitors to win the New York State Scholastic Chess K-3 Championship. His amazing story caught much attention and a GoFundMe campaign, set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough money for Tani and his family to move into a new home.
