1 . My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard. Within minutes of coming out, I was taken away into another room while doctors gave my parents the difficult news: I was born missing my left hand. I’m sure it was quite shocking for them.
Indeed, that announcement of my limb (肢体) difference might have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. I’m told that a nurse wrapped me up, took me back into the room, placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed. “You will take her home. You will raise her like you would any baby girl.”
My parents took that instruction seriously. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school, participated in student government and had playdates with friends. As kids do, I quickly learned to adapt, working around the missing hand. One of my earliest memories is my father trying to teach me to tie my shoes. His two-handed method wouldn’t work for me, so I figured out a way to do it with one hand.
However, that fact that I was different hit me hard when was 13, an age of great self-conscious and the need to fit in. I remember getting on the school bus and one of the kids stared just a little too long at my left arm. The staring unnerved me in a way it never had before, and I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I quickly slipped it into my pocket. I told myself that I’d just hide it that one day, while I was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week, which turned into a month, which became years.
After a two-decade struggle, I accidentally joined the Lucky Fin Project, where I met a group of people with limb difference. Among them, I felt no need to hide anymore. When I wasn’t so focused on hiding myself, I was able to look around, learning to appreciate the world and love myself.

It happened on one Sunday morning a few days ago. When I was about to have my routine cup of coffee along with a bagel, I realized that I did not have any bread at all. I have to admit that I am unable to enjoy coffee without some kind of baked food.
I decided to run out to buy something. However, all the stores were closed, but one. That store did not have any fresh pastries, and I ended up buying four slices of wheat bread. I was frustrated for two reasons: my favourite routine — Sunday coffee ruined, and the saleswoman charged me $3 for four slices of bread. I returned to the building where I lived on the tenth floor, stepped into the elevator, pushed the button, and got out. When I reached my apartment and tried to unlock the door, I could not turn the key. I made a few attempts but without success. I started banging on the door, hoping to wake up my daughter. I was not successful at that either.
I can’t explain how it crossed my mind to check the number of the apartment. The apartment number was correct, except for the first digit: the apartment was on the ninth floor, not the tenth. I was shocked to realize that I had been banging on somebody else’s door.
I still think over what might have happened if somebody had opened the door and what he or she would have said to me at 8:00 am on Sunday morning.

6 . I read Newport’s book, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, which he published in 2016. In this book, Newport makes the persuasive argument that highly focused work is increasingly not common in the modern workplace.
People are easy to get distracted (分心), whether they’re surfing the Internet for entertainment or wasting time on tasks like email and meetings. However, those who are able to push their cognitive (认知的) abilities to the limit can create new value and improve their skills. In other words, training one’s mind to focus on deep work not only makes one efficient and produces valuable work, but it also secures one’s place in a quickly changing economy.
Part I of Newport’s book explains the importance of deep work. Part II explores the process of how to develop such a practice in one’s own life by following four rules: (1) Work deeply; (2) Accept boredom; (3) Quit social media; (4) Remove shallow things.
Newport praises the importance of daily laziness in this book, writing, “Add regular and great freedom from professional concerns into your day, providing you with the idleness (闲散) required to get deep work done.” He advises doing this by shutting everything down at the end of the workday.
Deep Work is packed with useful tips and tools for making meaningful changes. Since picking up the book several weeks ago, I’ve been using bits and pieces of the philosophy, such as leaving my phone on silent all day long and checking it only at predetermined times, and not allowing myself to look things up online until I’ve finished writing an article. Now I’m able to start additional projects that I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t felt like I had the time before.

8 . Signs That You Are Growing
Growing is a lifelong process. Here are the signs that show that you are actually growing and not getting stuck in the process.
Often, we see how badly people look when they get overly upset due to unimportant things. So the first sign of maturity (成熟) is letting the small things go and not getting angry over a tiny detail that didn’t go as you planned.
You start forgiving and understanding other people
When we are young, we are often unforgiving. As we mature, we are better able to understand the world beyond black and white.
You always complete things that matter
Immature people don’t know when to commit (承诺) themselves and their energy or resources are always not well employed.
You accept the possibility of being wrong
Being mature is knowing that you are always growing up. You are never done learning and developing. This means that you don’t set yourself up as the highest authority.
A.You follow the crowd |
B.You let the small things go |
C.Instead, mature people focus on completing things that matter |
D.Immature and mature people can both have plans for their lives |
E.Rather, you open your mind to other ideas and new possibilities |
F.Becoming more understanding is a sign of strength, not weakness |
G.Mature people appear more confident, however, they are not overconfident |
