1 . Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois, the United States. On September 1, he set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career. Mr. Durietz has been teaching for 53 years — since he was 23 years old.
When he was just 11, Mr. Durietz says, he made up his mind to be a social studies teacher. Social studies is the study of history, and how people, countries, and cultures are connected. He became interested in history after hearing stories from his father, who fought in World War II.
Mr. Durietz got his first teaching job at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, Illinois in 1970. Ever since then, he’s been teaching social studies at the same school. He says he loves sharing his knowledge of history with students. “Teaching is never boring,” he says. “Every day is different.”
Things have changed a lot since Mr. Durietz first began teaching. When he started, he wrote on a blackboard with chalk, and the students used paper textbooks. These days, he and the students use computers and digital whiteboards. Despite this, Mr. Durietz says the students are still pretty much the same — except that now they have cell phones.
With or without technology, Mr. Durietz has used creative activities to help his students learn. For example, he has organized virtual field trips, geography contests, and special days about the US Civil War. He has even organized elections at school to help his students learn about politics.
Mr. Durietz wasn’t really trying to set a record. But his family, friends, and the people he works with encouraged him to apply to Guinness to see if he’d set a record. He had. Now he still has no plans to retire any time soon. “Keep working on what I love to do in life,” he says.

2 . Have you ever considered building a better future for your children?Let us start from here together to create a better future for them. The following are some tips for you.
Education
Going after a career in education is sometimes overlooked. Yet teaching is an important path to creating change. You will educate the young minds responsible for the future. In addition to presenting basic school subjects, you can teach them to be leaders. You can motivate them to want to make a difference themselves.
A career in education doesn’t have to mean teaching in a classroom. You can help them to learn in a way that works for them and be a friend to them as well.
Social work
As a social worker, you can directly change the lives of children in need as well advocate for services for drug abusers, family-violence survivors, mental-health patients, and more. You will provide them with the necessary resources to succeed and advise them through trauma (精神创伤), unemployment, education difficulties, addiction and poverty.
Many social workers are associated with governmental agencies, but there are also jobs in schools, nonprofit organizations and hospitals.
Child psychology
Studying child psychology may lead to a career option. Psychologists can provide support for children with mental-health problems and give them a place to be open about their feelings.
You may wish to become a school psychologist and guide children (and their parents) through the education system while dealing with mental illness or trauma. You may even conduct your own research on new treatment methods.

3 . Back in 2020, when schools were still virtual and citizens were living their lives in masks, Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, emerged as one of the earliest critics of remote work. “There’s a huge value to working together in terms of cooperation and creativity and training the younger people,” he said.
Three years later, Dimon’s opinion is unchanged. The difference now is that it has gone mainstream. With the pandemic declared over, most American companies seem to have settled on the idea that some in-person time is beneficial — even necessary — for workplaces.
Studies have found people get more feedback when they’re in the same space as their coworkers, leading to more opportunities for advancement. And while findings on productivity are mixed, there’s evidence that fully remote workers encounter more friction when trying to convey information quickly.
After making remote work possible for millions of people, Zoom is now telling some of its own employees to show up in person. The company has decided that employees who live within 50 miles of a Zoom office are required to work in-person two days per week in the office.
However, many office workers who enjoyed greater autonomy while working from home are not readily giving that up, even as their employers step up demands for them to come back. Hired by Microsoft as a senior training associate, Garcia Espejo works from home most of the time, scheduled as she sees fit. For Garcia Espejo, who’s been caring for her elderly parents, it will be painful to lose this flexibility.
“Post-COVID for the first time ever, people are being told when and where to show up, and it just is causing this reaction from people like, ‘Wait a minute. I’m not ready!’” says Debbie Lovich, managing director at the Boston Consulting Group.
Still, the trend is coming. A recent survey of 1,500 office workers, conducted by Boston Consulting Group, found 85% working in “a hybrid mode,” and only 8% fully remote.

5 . A man recently connected with me on LinkedIn and sent me this note: “Let me know if you ever need a writer. ”I guess he’s a writer? I don’t know. But I do know this phrase “Let me know if you ever need a…” shows up a lot, in my inbox and surely yours, too. I’ve come to think of it as the eight most deadly words in selling oneself because that phrase is the death of opportunity.
Let’s consider the approach. These people are being standoffish. Rather than selling themselves, they’re shifting the burden onto someone else to make the sale. If I need a writer, I should reach out to them. If I need a story, I should ask them for an interview. If I need a customer service solution, I should ask them for details. “Let me know if you ever need a…” sounds like an invitation, but it’s really a shrug.
Imagine the situation where I’d assign a story to the writer who used the nine words, “Let me know if you ever need a writer. ”Just anyone who can string words together. I would have needed to be in a panic, so desperate for someone to contribute to our magazine that I’d stopped thinking about great writers or good writers, or even serviceable writers and simply settled for: a writer. This isn’t a situation that exists. The world is full of good options! We are not living in times of shortage. If we need a job done, there are plenty of qualified people to do it. Our question is: Who’s the best?
If you want to create opportunity for yourself, answer that question convincingly. The first thing to do is show someone you are the opportunity. Hiring you can help them. We also need to stop hiding behind ourselves. Get out in front! Sell yourself and your amazing abilities. Understand someone’s problem, and explain exactly why you are the solution. Avoid saying “Let me know if you ever need a…”. Instead, start with: “Let me explain how I can help you.”
1. What do we know from the author’s experience?A.We’d better start our own careers as early as possible. |
B.The author prefers to hire his employees on LinkedIn. |
C.The phrase “Let me know if you ever need a…” is useful. |
D.Many people use the wrong opening sentence to sell themselves. |
A.Frank and open. | B.Unfriendly and proud. |
C.Unsure and sensitive. | D.Concerned and confident. |
A.The author is in desperate need of a writer’s help. |
B.There are very few great writers available nowadays. |
C.Anyone who can string words together is a good writer. |
D.The author isn’t interested in the writer using the nine words. |
A.Ways of selling oneself. | B.Tips for job interviews. |
C.Preparations for landing a job. | D.Requirements for common jobs. |
6 . Jenn Larson was just 14 years old when she took over the bookkeeping for her family’s dairy farm near Firth, Idaho. She soon saw firsthand how challenging it was for her parents, who lacked any college education, to properly manage the unpredictable earnings of farming. This started a lifelong passion for finance, and it led her down an unexpected path to becoming a role model she never had.
Yet, such ambitions ran in obvious contrast to everything familiar to her. “I didn’t have any advisors,” Larson says. “I didn’t have anyone to look up to for a professional example. All the women I associated with were stay-at-home moms.” Despite having parents who couldn’t fully understand her ambitions, Larson went to the BYU Marriott School, where she earned a business degree and focused much of her coursework on international finance.
Larson worked for seven years as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, advising clients on important financial decisions. Larson returned to BYU Marriott in 2008 to earn an MBA, and accepted a position in the school as an assistant professor following her graduation. For more than a decade, Larson has taught finance classes to undergraduate and MBA students. While she teaches finance, Larson tries to help her students see how mastering finance principles can also impact their personal lives.
Constantly balancing motherhood and work, Larson makes adjustments to the way she teaches. She gave birth to her first three children in three years while teaching at BYU Marriott, wondering at times if labor might start while in front of a class full of students. During the pandemic, Larson taught online classes from her dining room table while taking care of a newborn and other young children at home.
As a female instructor in the often male-dominated finance industry, Larson works to inspire other women who seek a similar path to hers. Larson became the role model that she never had — the example that a 14-year-old girl staring at a farming expense sheet couldn’t find. Now, Labor on’s children and students will always have that example.

9 . Acting is all about charm, respect, honor, and all that fame stuff, right? Wrong. Maybe when you’re a big star you’ll get all of that, but it’s a different story for the rest of us. As a normal and unknown actor, here’s a typical day on a film set.
Yesterday my alarm clock went off at 5:20 AM. I had a call time of 7:00 AM and the filming place was far. I gave myself time for a shower and an hour’s drive to the set, plus an extra 10 minutes for safety. The morning traffic was slow as usual but I managed to get there on time.
The director and crew (工作人员) were already there, setting up the scene. Then I talked with the director and found out that he’d changed the lines that I had stayed up until 1:00 AM memorizing the night before. We rehearsed (排练) the scene several times, and then they excused me from it while the crew continued setting up the lights. Normally I’d stay and hang out, but I needed to memorize the new lines so I went to my truck. About twenty minutes later a production assistant knocked on my door.
We got to act and I stepped up to my position. “Roll Cameral” … “Action!” I started to say my lines… “Cut!“ After a few more takes, it was time to move on.
Was there applause (掌声)? Congratulations? Of course not. This is a film, not theater.
You might get a “nice job” out of the director, but that’s it. If there’s one thing you should know about film acting, it’s that there’s a lot of waiting: auditions and preparation for acting. So, is it as shiny as you imagined? Probably not. I’ve got used to my ordinary acting day, but it’s still a wonderful experience bonding with the crew.
In all walks of life, we usually only give those excellent people cheers and it’s more likely that we will not pay attention to the ordinary person. However, even if they have not become a shining star, they are worthy of applause because they are towards their goal of continuous efforts, and finding the value of their own with their passions as well.
