文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了园艺是一个用来锻炼的好方式。

1 . A lot of people find it difficult to do exercise regularly, even though they know it’s good for their physical and mental (身心上的) health. Yet keeping on a workout routine doesn’t necessarily go to the gym or run around your neighborhood. Gardening is a great example of a popular hobby that can be used as a workout.

Nashville resident Tom Adkinson, 72, is on board with the idea of gardening to stay fit. He has three gardens, which he uses primarily to grow tomatoes, sweet banana peppers and okra. Like traditional exercise, Adkinson does a lot of preparation before gardening, and then he spends hours watering and weeding (除草) all three gardens, involving bending and stretching, which he compares to performing garden yoga.

“It is wise of Adkinson to do so. Even though gardening may not appear difficult, using the body in new ways can make you hurt if you don’t warm up beforehand,” said Zeller, who teaches at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County in New Jersey.

Working in your garden just two hours a week could improve your mood. And the communal gardening, which is done by a number of people as a group in communities and schools, provides social benefits that can reduce stress and help fight against loneliness and even dementia according to studies.

“With all these benefits, gardening for fitness will be a trend (趋势) in the coming year,” announced Mandal, CEO of the fitness coaching app Future, “Our users at Future have already been asking their coaches to add gardening and landscaping activities into their routines because it’s easy to get and fit into their lifestyle.”

3 . Learning To Run

At middle school, I felt that it was boring to run around the playing ground. Then, last year, my classmate asked me if I’d like to run a 15-kilometer event with him.    1

I thought about the question all the weekend. I thought, “Why do I dislike running? I haven’t tried it since I was 7!” Eventually, I decided to give running one more chance before saying I hated it.    2    He was glad to hear that I would join him, and advised me to look on the Internet for a running program to help me learn how to run.

3    I chose a 14-week running program which would teach me how to run for 30 minutes non-stop. The program was very easy to follow, with precise instructions on what to do each week.

I liked following the running program as I could see improvements in my running each week.    4    My younger self wouldn’t have believed it. I went from hating running to loving it!

On the day of the 15-kilometer event, I was both excited and nervous. Finally, it was time to put my new skills into practice. My friends and families came to support me. It was lovely to have them there. With their support and my training, I managed to finish the 15-kilometer event in 105 minutes.    5

From this experience I learned it’s a good idea to try something before saying “No way!”

A.Running is often tiring and lots of hard work.
B.It was tough but I felt very proud for having tried it.
C.My instant reaction was “No way! I dislike running.”
D.There were various running programs on the Internet.
E.I told my classmate that I wanted to enter the event with him.
F.I went from running for 30 seconds to running for over 30 minutes!
G.Running is a good way to exercise because it makes my heart strong.

4 . The relation between golf and improved mental health is strong enough for golf activists to be used as a form of treatment in a 2022 study. The results indicate that mental health benefits from playing the game.

Golf is a difficult sport, with expert timing, flexibility, speed, technique and balance required as you swing a bat around 80 — 110 mph (miles per hour).     1     Therefore, golf teaches us to accept victory and failure equally, which is an excellent state of mind to balance ups and downs of life.

2     You can turn off your tech and concentrate on a task. It can provide a sense of calm and clearness. Spending time in green spaces or bringing nature into your life can benefit your wellbeing. Getting outdoors has been proved to improve mood and reduce stress and anger.     3     Golfers can receive this enough nutrient (营养物) in the body through increased exposure (接触) to sunlight.

Playing golf enables us to fight anxiety by maintaining your brain in an active problem-solving mode.     4     By keeping your brain active and in “thinking” mode, you can focus more on the game and less on the things that you may concern you. Playing golf can give off the “feel good” endorphin (内啡肽) that can fight anxiety and low spirits.

Golf is widely recognized as a low-risk sport compared to many other sports.     5     The games can be played at your own pace and for longer periods of time, which is a unique feature of golf. The chances of a sports injury are certainly lower in comparison with other sports like basketball or badminton.

A.It is naturally unavoidable that you will hit either poor shots or good.
B.You’ve to keep focused, plan moves and perform tricks.
C.Golf is an openair sport that is surrounded by nature.
D.Playing sports with other people helps improve your social skills.
E.Golf is shining a light on social impacts and physical health.
F.There’s less stress on the joints (关节) as the swings can be adjusted.
G.Vitamin D is equally significant for both mental and physical wellness.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了疫情期间,很多人改变了健身习惯,在家线上锻炼,本文介绍了这种现状,并分析了其优缺点。

5 . During the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), some people found their exercise was greatly reduced. However, it was an attraction for others to increase their physical activity. With the change of working from home, some physical activity was reduced. People took this newly freed up time as a chance to add exercise to their day, with online fitness programs and health apps (应用软件) reporting an increase.

However, the early drive to exercise appears to have been short-lived for many, with a study comparing activity levels between the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Victoria finding most people reported a reduction in their physical activity levels the second time around because of a shortage of encouragement. A study found that COVID-19 has reduced physical activity and increased sedentary (久坐不动的) behavior, and the effects could be lasting.

Continuing concerns about COVID-19 have led to carefulness about returning to public spaces such as gyms. But also, with many people changing their exercise habits and setting up home gyms during the pandemic, it’s become much more convenient to exercise at home. It’s clear for many of us that COVID-19 changed how and how much we exercise. But the changes don’t necessarily have to be for the worse.

People who changed to online workouts (锻炼), fitness apps and home gyms during the pandemic said their exercise was less satisfying, less enjoyable and they felt less active com-pared with doing exercise in gyms. Besides the physical effects, people reported missing the social communication, friendship, and being avoidable of the gym. In-person classes also offer the advantages of management and instruction, which can help make sure workouts are completed safely and effectively.

However, online workouts, fitness apps and near-home workouts are likely here to stay, and offer many advantages, such as no need to travel to the gym and convenience, making it easy to fit in a workout while working and shouldering family responsibilities.

1. How do some people add exercise to their day during the pandemic?
A.By returning to public places.B.By driving to a lonely park.
C.By turning to the Internet.D.By taking face-to-face classes.
2. What can we learn about exercise during the pandemic from the text?
A.People have changed exercise habits.B.People like to build their home gym.
C.People strongly wish to exercise.D.People refuse to go back to public gyms.
3. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A.The disadvantages of exercising at home.
B.The way to exercise during the pandemic.
C.The examples of good exercise at home.
D.The reasons for people changing home exercise.
4. What does the author think of exercising at home in the last paragraph?
A.It is difficult.B.It is worrying.
C.It is challenging.D.It is helpful.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了运动减肥的错误认知并倡导人们用正确的态度对待锻炼。

6 . Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing.

For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda.

When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising brought no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advantage, but it was slight — about 4 pounds.

In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (抵消) by eagerness for more food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), effects that over time limit how many pounds we lose.

When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment — a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say “I’ll need to do extra exercise” after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being “bad.” In this case, we’re unlikely to keep doing it for very long.

The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.

1. What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Necessary.B.Popular.C.Dangerous.D.Useless.
2. What happens when you run 30 minutes on a daily basis?
A.You will burn 140 calories every day.
B.You will lose 4 pounds in a month.
C.You might have a higher metabolic rate.
D.You might eat more than usual.
3. Why do people who want to lose weight through exercise often give up?
A.They are unlikely to really enjoy it.
B.They find it too challenging physically.
C.They have difficulty resisting (抵抗) delicious food.
D.They turn their attention to their well-being.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.How long should you exercise a day to lose weight?
B.What are the best exercises for losing weight?
C.Weight loss: why exercise is the wrong path
D.Exercise and weight loss: a pair of brothers

7 . A study led by The University of Edinburgh researchers found that the performance of runners who listened to self-selected music as they ran after completing a demanding thinking task was at the same level as when they were not mentally tired. The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Human Sport and Exercise.

Researchers used two tests to study how listening to music affected the running performance of fitness enthusiasts. One test looked at the effects on the interval running ability—alternating between high intensity (强度) running and lower intensity jogging—with a group of nine exercisers, and the other on a 5 km time trial with a group of nine trained runners. The groups completed a 30-minute computer-based cognitive (认知的) test which put them in a mentally worn state before completing high intensity exercise. They were tested with and without motivational music which they selected.

Taking into account the results of a baseline test taken by participants that they did without completing a mentally demanding test beforehand and without music, the researchers found the interval running ability of the mentally worn fitness enthusiasts was slightly greater with music compared to that without music, and was the same as when the participants were not mentally tired. The 5 km time trial performance also showed small improvements with self-selected music compared to no music.

Dr. Shaun Phillips, of The University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport, said, “Feeling tired mentally is a common occurrence for many of us, and can negatively affect many of our daily activities, including exercise. Finding safe and effective ways to reduce this negative impact is therefore useful. The research showing that listening to self-selected motivational music can help active people improve their endurance (耐力) running ability and performance when mentally worn out may provide a useful strategy.”

1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study?
A.Its purpose.B.Its principle.C.Its process.D.Its participants.
2. Why did the researchers consider the baseline test?
A.To prove that their finding is useful.
B.To offer evidence to support their study.
C.To make a comparison with their test results.
D.To find links between music and mental health.
3. What is Dr. Shaun Phillips’ attitude towards the research?
A.Approving.B.Tolerant.C.Critical.D.Carefree.
4. Which of the following can serve as the best title?
A.Being Mentally Tired Is a Common Feeling
B.Listening to Music Benefits Mental Health
C.Exercise Regularly Improves Mental Condition
D.Running to Music Reduces Mental Tiredness
