4 . As COVID-19 spread around the globe this spring, people sought comfort in music. That they have used music to connect, comfort, and lift spirits during these unsettling times comes as no surprise to David Silbersweig, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry (精神病学) at Brigham and his partner, Haddad.

Silbersweig and Haddad are both musicians with lasting interests in how music excites the brain — and how it can be used to improve health. They found when people are dealing with very stressful situations, music is universally accepted as something helpful during these periods.

Silbersweig explained that the process by which they recognize a series of sounds as music is incredibly complex. It starts with sound waves entering the ear, striking the eardrum, and causing vibrations (振动) that are transformed into electric signals. These signals travel to the brainstem, then they spread to activate different parts of the brain. It is noteworthy that different parts of the brain are activated, depending on the type of music and whether we are listening, playing, learning, or composing music.

Music can change brain structure and function, both after being heard immediately and repeatedly, according to the research. These changes in brain connectivity suggest opportunities to activate certain regions to promote recovery. Silbersweig and Haddad look forward to using cutting-edge brain research to build on what’s already known about the amazing power of music to help patients. The pair find people with short-term memory loss from Alzheimer’s disease often recognize familiar songs like “Happy Birthday” because they have been stored into their brain’s long-term memory.

Haddad witnessed this response while performing for patients in hospitals. She noted, “There are many patients who are essentially seated, lying down, eyes closed, not able to communicate. But when you play a song that they recognize from their youth, their eyes light up. They’re sitting up and smiling, too. It’s just incredible.”

Jazz With JLCO and Wynton Marsalis

Jazz at Lincon Centre Orchesra and trumpet master Wynton Marsalis will join hands to tour three Chinese cities: Shenzhen, Beijing and Tianjin in April, bringing the most popular jazz music from the US. Their Beijing stop will be on March 20, at the Forbidden City Concert Hall.

African Wood Carvings

You’ve never heard songs quite like this before. In fact, it seems that Moyun of Hong Kong can transform just about any song into something completely new     1     the help of the Guzheng. This traditional Chinese instrument     2    (make) of 16 or more strings and movable bridges. Together, it produces some of the sweetest sounds that pair surprisingly well with     3     was originally a rock song.

“Traditional Chinese instruments aren’t suited for     4    (adapt) a band’s entire sound,” Moyun said. “Guzheng is like the bass. It’s hard to create variations with it.” Despite the     5    (limitation), Moyun has mastered the process of changing popular music for the Guzheng. In one of her many videos     6    (share) on YouTube, she does this with “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. During her     7    (perform), Moyun is constantly moving both of her hands, each movement     8    (effortless) methodical and fascinating to watch. When she’s not plucking(弹拨) one of the instrument’s many stings, she is beating it like a drum.

By sharing videos like these, Moyun hopes that more people will come to appreciate this unique instrument. “Chinese culture tends     9    (be) abstract,” she said. “It’s not really accessible. But pop culture is accessible. By putting     10     two together, I hope the audience can appreciate my music.”

10 . People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds? Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate(激发)similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a major factor.

A total of 622 people took part in the study. All of the volunteers came from one of three locations: two suburban college towns in the US (one in Arkansas and the other in Michigan), or the rural Chinese village of Dimen. It’s worth noting that the main language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China. Locals there have little contact with Western media or culture at all. All participants listened to the exact same 32 “musical stimuli”— which were 60-second cuts of instrumental music. Half of these pieces came from Western music while the rest came from Chinese music.

After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their heads while listening. Incredibly, people from Arkansas and Michigan often described very similar stories, even using the exact same words frequently. Dimen listeners, on the other hand, envisioned stories that were similar to each other but quite different from the American listeners. More specifically, one track led t o Americans seeing a cowboy in the hot desert surveying an empty town. Meanwhile, Chinese participants imagined a man in ancient times reflecting on the loss of a loved one.

“There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way, over headphones. But it turns out, it’s still a shared experience, almost like a shred dream, although not universally shared, ”says Elizabeth Margulis, the study author.

The results paint a more complex picture of music’s power. Music can generate remarkably similar stories in listeners’ minds, but it depends on a common set of cultural experiences. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also be true-it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture.
