Earlier this summer, after packing my rucksack for a wild-camping holiday, I gazed at my belongings, and made a final adjustment to the contents of my bag.    1

I quickly emailed my travel companion, a photographer friend called Jacob to make sure I could have some pictures of our trip afterwards, so I could pop a few up on Instagram when I returned. And then I set off, feeling — for the first time in a number of trips — that I was genuinely escaping the stresses and strains of my everyday life.    2    Because the way stress locates us, these days, is via our phones.

3    However, I've realized that for a holiday really to function as a holiday, I need an escape from social status anxiety , from caring about “likes”, and from having to photograph every tiny detail of life to prove our existence. When we overshare a glossy version of our trip online, we miss out on talking about our trips when we return, which is part of the joy of travel. Posting in the moment denies us this opportunity to relive (回味) our experience, and prolong that holiday feeling.    4

During my three-day Insta-break, my stress levels decrease quickly within 24 hours.    5    I made mental notes of funny moments, cultural observations, tips and when I returned, I had interesting, detailed chats with friends about my time away.

A.I also changed how I processed the trip itself.
B.So I am fully supportive of screen-free holidays.
C.I took out my iPhone, and threw it under my bed.
D.1 would lose track of my coworkers, my friends and my family.
E.None of them could touch me for the next three glorious days.
F.So this summer, as you plan your trip, ask if you can delete Instagram.
G.As a travel writer, abandoning my phone for my holiday felt like the extreme betrayal.

Armed with the feedback (反馈) my students had given me, I began hatching a plan. These kids were bright. They were motivated. My honors class deserved to be taught in a way that would speak to them.

We'd study social and economic history, not just battles and generals. We'd read novels to bring home the humanity of history. Tests would cover the facts, but also require higher level thinking skills. No tricky true-false questions.

At first, I was surprised by how many of my students used poor grammar and lacked writing skills. And some seemed to hesitate when reading out loud. But we worked on those skills repeatedly while we were learning history. The school year came to an end more quickly than I could have imagined. Most had earned A and B. No one had averaged lower than C.

Before summer break. Mrs. Anderson, the headmaster, called me into her office for my end-of-year evaluation. “I want to congratulate you on a great freshman season,” she said with a smile. “Especially on how well you did with your remedial (矫正) kids.”

“Remedial kids? I don’t understand.”

Mrs. Anderson looked at me in a strange way. “Your first period class was a remedial. Surely you saw that indicated at the top of the roll (名单),” She pulled a file folder from a drawer and handed it to me. I opened it. There at the top, was the word HONORS. I showed it to Mrs. Anderson.

“Oh. dear,” she said. “What a mistake! How did you ever manage, treating slow students as though they were...”

I couldn't help but finish the sentence for her. “As though they were bright? I think we've both learned a lesson from this, one they didn't teach in any of the education courses I took, but one I'll never forget.”

【推荐2】As a music teacher for twenty-seven years I have always known that music touches the soul. It can break through all kinds of barriers to reach students in a very special way. It can be the means for each child to find their light.
A few years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to teach pre-school students one afternoon a week. One of my most memorable students was Vanessa. She was five years old ,had difficulty walking and could not speak. We mostly sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to sit on my lap. One of her favorite songs was John the Rabbit. It was a call and response song where I sang the call and the students clapped two times while singing the repeating phrase “Oh yes!” Vanessa liked to put her hands together with mine and clap with me. We performed that song during every class Vanessa and I clapping together. She never said or sang a word.
One day late in the school year when the song was finished Vanessa turned around, looked at me in the eye, clapped her tiny hands two times and said the words “Oh yes!” I opened my mouth and could not speak. Through music we had made a connection.
Several years later I came across Vanessa on the street in town. I stopped my car and waved to say hello. She waved back with a big smile on her face and then clapped her hands two times mimicking the song we had performed in our music class. This precious little girl through her connection with music left an impression on me that will last forever.
