“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” ---Jeff Bezos.
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start-ups don't, and I wasn't sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I admired very much. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said. “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but eventually, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

It took tireless laborers another eight years to finish it, but when it opened, goods could travel by boat from the vast interior (内陆) of the country. They could go from the Great Lakes, cross a huge stretch of New York State and then travel down the Hudson River to New York City. Thanks largely to the Erie Canal, New York grew into a world-famous metropolis (大都市), doubling in size the next succeeding decades.
It was an amazing creation of engineering, especially at a time when there were no civil engineers in America. But there were people who became engineers. People like Benjamin Wright, my great-great-great-great-grandfather. He was originally just a surveyor in upstate New York and a judge used to settling boundary quarrels. Because of his first-hand knowledge of the region, he became involved in the project.
I can’t begin to imagine the challenges those newly-created engineers faced. The idea of the canal had been ridiculed for years. Thomas Jefferson even said it was “an act of either folly or madness”. But it was commonly called “Clinton’s Folly” because DeWitt Clinton, the NY governor, green-lighted the project. But madness and folly happened and by October 1825, the Canal was opened for boat traffic, cutting down the expense of bringing cargo(货物)from Midwest to the East Coast by 95 percent.
When I look at the yellowish photo of my ancestor Benjamin Wright, I don’t see any family association. And I certainly didn’t get any of his talent for math or engineering (I consider it an achievement to change a light bulb). But the quality I would like to model is his can-do attitude. But you don’t need an ancestor for that. You just need some faith and willingness to step out and take a risk.

He not only taught me to perform better and achieve more success than expected, he, more importantly, taught me to think. He convinced me, as much by example as words that it was my moral obligation to do so and to serve others.
Neither of us could know how our relationship would evolve over the years. When I came back to Bohunt to teach English, I worked for Dr. Whitworth, the department chair. My discussion with him was like graduate seminars in adolescent development, classroom management and school leadership.
After several years, I was named department chair, and our relationship shifted again. I thought that it might be awkward chairing the department, since all of my former English teachers were still there, but Dr. Whitworth supported me throughout. As the former chair, he knew when to give me advice about curriculum, texts and personnel, and when to let me chart my own course.
In 1997, I needed his opinion about leaving Bohunt to become principal at another school. If he had asked me to stay at Bohunt, I might have. Instead, he encouraged me to seize the opportunity.
Five years ago, I became the principal of Bohunt. Once again, Dr. Whitworth was there for me, letting me know that I could count on him. I have learned from him that great teachers have an inexhaustible (用不完的) wealth of lessons to teach.

I was pretty shocked when I first stepped into the campus. Well, it's not even really a campus. It's more like a district in a small town. Harvard's main buildings are from the 18th century. They look very old and simple. You might even say they're a little shabby. They don't fit the modern idea of the university at all. The buildings are surrounded by grass and trees, so I felt as if I had walked into an ancient castle. But when I looked across the street, busy shops and in-fashion students made me feel like I was in the 21st century again. It creates a strong contrast and brings a special atmosphere to the school.
Our tour guide Gary took us around and told us, "You see this grass field in the center of the school? Here is where they host(举办) their graduation ceremony. They just set up tents and beaches and have a very simple ceremony." Unbelievable! Who would think the most talented students just graduate on the lawn?
I saw some students put a blanket on the grass and lie down to read a book. When I listened to the soft sound of pages turning, along with singing of the birds, I felt very calm. There was no competitive feeling at all.
Harvard has the world's first computer in its science center and there are hundreds of high-end(高端的) computers, too. Its religion and the literature departments are also among the best. It is the perfect mix of tradition and new technology. It makes Harvard a very attractive place to study in.
I hope one day I'll attend my dream school-Harvard.

The warmth of her mum and dad’s welcome for poor guests at the coldest time of the year inspired the 69-year-old grandmother to spread her own seasonal joy. “Mum and dad hadn’t even got a penny,” recalls Gloria. “But it didn’t matter. They’d never turn down any homeless one who knocked on the door.”
“When I became a mum, I tried to make the festive season as special as possible. However, I once met an old lady who was spending Christmas alone in bed. It broke my heart.”
In December 2007, Gloria hosted the first Home Alone lunch after advertising to the public and receiving donations. It took a special person with a big heart and an even bigger table to invite 87 lonely old people for Christmas. Her Home Alone event has lasted up to now.
Every Christmas, Gloria wears her most sparkly dress to serve the traditional roast to every table of her smiling, grateful guests, making time to speak to as many of them as possible. After her first lunch, Gloria was nicknamed Mrs. Christmas. And now she has written a book about her extraordinary life helping bring joy to the elderly who would normally spend Christmas alone.
She wrote in her book, “When I was a child, I had few friends and I was laughed at for being so poor. So I was determined no one else should bear the loneliness and hardship I had suffered.” Having battled cancer three times, Gloria became even more determined to make sure Christmas was not clouded by sadness.
Now the Home Alone event has grown to serving turkey lunch to over 500 happy guests. The kind lady received an award from Sheffield City Council for her efforts and was praised by former Prime Minister David Cameron.
But for Gloria, the real prize comes as she watches the smiles light up the faces of her lunch guests. She says, “There really is no greater reward. Just for a few hours they escape their loneliness and are surrounded by love.”

“Dear Park Ranger, Deep Creek Conversation Park was great! I especially liked the Tom Branch Falls,” the youngster, named Karina, began her letter. “I love it so much; I wanted to have a souvenir to come home with me, so I took a rock. I’m sorry, and now I want to return it. Also, here’s a donation!”
The heartfelt letter concluded with a postscript to “also look on the back”, where the girl drew a picture of the Tom Branch Falls, a waterfall in the grand park near Swain County, N.C. Lucky for Karina, the park rangers were touched by her sincere apologies for the small “theft”, and even wrote back.
“Dear Karina, thank you so much for returning the rock. It has made its way back to the Tom Branch Falls. We are so glad you enjoyed your visit,” the park officials wrote in their Facebook post. “Already, you are becoming an amazing keeper for the park. Thank you for recognizing that what is in the park should stay in the park. If every visitor took a rock home, that would mean 11 million rocks would be gone from the park every year. Now that you know to leave nature the way you find it, we hope you will help share this message with others. It is always a good thing to give another the chance to discover!” the officials concluded.
The cute letter evidently hit all the right notes with Facebook commenters, who agreed that Karina had the quality to be a “future park ranger”, and praised her parents for the valuable lesson the exercise taught the girl.

Sports teachers of other countries liked De Coubertin ideas. So in 1896, the modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. Since then the Olympics have been held once every four years, except three times, when there were wars.
The modern Olympic games have many foot races and field sports programs. The longest race in the games is called marathon.
Before the start of the Olympic Games, runners carry lighted torch( 火炬 ) through many nations towards the stadium where the games will be held. These sportsmen are from different countries. Yet they work together to carry the Olympic torch. It is passed from runner to runner, When the last runner enters the stadium, he or she places the torch in a special basin filled with oil. It catches fire. It is then, only then, that the Olympic Games can begin.

A new international analysis (分析) shows a surprising answer: while obesity (肥胖) increases the risk of dying early, being slightly overweight reduces it. These studies included almost 3 million adults from around the world, yet the results were clearly the same, the authors of the analysis said.
“If you have a medical condition, your chances, of living are slightly better if you are a bit on the heavy side,” says study author Katherine Flegal, “Several factors may contribute to this finding.”
“Heavier people may tend to see the doctor earlier,” she says, “and may be more likely to be treated according to the doctor’s advice. Obesity itself may protect the heart, or someone who is heavier might be better able to fight against a shock to the system.”
For the study, Flegal’s team collected data on more than 2.88 million people included in 97 studies. The researchers looked at the participants’ (参与者) body mass index (BMI), a measure of body fat that takes into consideration a person’s height and weight.
The researchers found that, compared with people of normal weight, overweight people had a 6 percent lower risk of death. Obese people, however, had an 18 percent higher risk. For those who were the least obese, the risk of death was 5 percent lower than people of normal weight, but for those who were the most obese, the risk of death was 29 percent higher, the findings showed.
While the study found a relation between weight and the risk of early death, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship. Indeed, one expert warmed that body weight alone cannot tell health and the risk of death.
“There are other factors that play a role in health,” says Dr. William, a professor at Louisiana State University. “BMI simply is a parameter (参数); it doesn’t take family history, smoking, fitness, and other factors into consideration.”
1. What did Flegal’s team do for their study?A.They interviewed almost 3 million adults. | B.They did 97 experiments with fat people. |
C.They collected data on 2.88 million people. | D.They talked with doctors for medical conditions. |
A.5 percent lower | B.6 percent lower | C.18 percent higher | D.29 percent higher |
