Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty frightening. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slips, you probably needn’t worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss.
After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, places and things quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts become smaller, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow.
Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the movie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says.
When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved”. Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong
But even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants.
You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive(认知的) reserve, Daffner says.
“Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways, ” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster

Advice from organizational psychologist Liane Davey, author of You First: Inspire Your Team to Grow Up, Get Along, and Get Stuff Done.
CHOOSE YOUR MOMENT “Tie the timing of your request for a raise to positive results. If you have a notable success in the middle of the year, start the discussion soon afterwards. Even if the pay cycle means the raise cannot happen for some time you will have seeded the conversation at a moment when your manager is feeling positively inclined towards you.”
KNOW YOUR WORTH “Before making your request, write down a list of your accomplishments, and ask a trusted confidant what you bring to the team—particularly what is unique about your contribution—to ensure you get a comprehensive list. Be prepared to talk about the impact you have, rather than effort alone, as this is what makes your case for a raise compelling.”
PLAY IT COOL “In difficult conversations, your tone and body language are especially important. Go in calmly and projecting that you believe you are adding value. Don’t under-do it by dropping eye contact or making yourself smaller. But don’t over-do it by raising your chin too high or making statements you don’t intend to follow through—that will destroy your credibility.”
ASK FOR CLARITY “If you are unsuccessful, first find out why your request was denied. Do not let your manager get away with a superficial answer such as “we don’t have the budget”-there is always budget, so ask what else took priority. Next, ask what specific actions you can take that will make you more likely to be given a pay raise in the future.”
BE FLEXIBLE “Remember that pay is only one way your company can demonstrate your value. Some companies have little room for pay raises, but more room to negotiate on annual leave, flexible hours or working from home. If your efforts to get a rise are unsuccessful, do not give up without first searching for alternative sources of value.” |
A.Proposing your pay raise request at a wrong time. |

Equipment (设备) strength training
Equipment strength training is the best way to slowdown the process (过程) of muscle loss. Many gyms and health clubs have such muscle-building equipments as weights or running machines.
Also listen to your body. If an exercise causes pain, stop immediately. After the pain goes away you can try the exercise again, but with a lower weight or speed.
No equipment strength training
You do not have to use special exercise equipment or go to a gym to do strength training. You can just use your own body weight. Such excises include push-ups, side jumps, jumping jacks or deep knee bends.
Exercises that use body weight are usually safer for beginners. They can also be easier on the body, and you can do them anywhere.
Warm up
Give your muscles time to recover. Experts say it is better to rest one full day between exercising each specific muscle group.

Replacing 30 minutes per day of sedentary (久坐不动的) time with 30 minutes of physical activity at a light intensity (强度) was associated with a 17% lower risk of early death in a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology on Monday.
The study also found that replacing 30 minutes of sedentary time with 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous (剧烈的)exercise was associated with a 35% lower risk of early death. “If you replace 30 minutes of sitting time with 30 minutes of light-intensity physical activity-so something just like a casual walk down the hall-that still can lower your risk,”said Keith Diaz, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.“Obviously, it doesn’t lower your risk as much as exercise, or as much as moderate to vigorous physical activity, but it still can lower risk, and to us, that was somewhat of a new finding,” Keith Diaz said.“Any movement for any length of time is going to give you health benefit, and this is really changing what we know about physical activity.”
The study included national data on 7,999 people aged 45 and older who wore activity monitors to track their sedentary time between 2009 and 2013. The researchers used that data to analyze the benefits that could be caused if sedentary time in the data was replaced with physical activity.
The researchers found that replacing sitting time with exercise and movement was associated with a benefit, but replacing long periods of sitting with shorter periods of sitting was not. “In our previous work, we found that if you take a break every 30 minutes, it will lower your risk from sitting,” Diaz said, and the new study also show that in the data.“We went deeper into the data to try to understand why people who took a movement every 30 minutes had a lower risk of death. It’s because they just had more opportunity to move,” he said.

The findings, reported in the journal of Pediatrics, do not mean that the Internet is to blame. For example, teens in the study who spent no time online were also at increasing risk of depression symptoms (症状). However, the researchers say that both heavy internet use, and non-use, could serve as signals that a teenager is having a hard time.
For the study, Dr. Pierre-Andre Michaud and colleagues at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, surveyed 7, 200 individuals aged 16 to 19 about their internet use. Those who were online more than two hours per day were considered “heavy” internet users, while those online anywhere from several times per week to two hours per day were considered “regular” users. The teenagers also answered a number of health-related questions, including some standard questions about “depressive tendencies” that measure how often a person feels sad or hopeless.
Compared with regular Internet users, the study found, kids who were heavy users or non-users were more likely to be depressed or very depressed. Among boy teens, heavy users and non-users were both around one-third more likely to have a high depression score, compared to “regular” users. Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users. That was with factors like family income and any chronic health problems taken into consideration.
However, the average depression scores among non-users, regular users and heavy users alike were all toward the lower end—between 1 and 2 on a scale (等级) of 1 to 4, with 1 being “not depressed at all.”
The researchers concluded (推测) that it may come from the fact that teenagers usually go online to chat with their friends and that they may not be more likely to be depressed.
1. What does the new study show?A.It’s normal for teenagers to spend time online. |
B.Too little time online causes teen’s depression. |
C.Too much time online results in teen’s depression. |
D.The teens might be depressed because of too much or too little Internet use. |
A.Little use of the Internet means no depression. |
B.The Internet is a main cause of teens’ depression. |
C.The Internet is not responsible for teens’ depression. |
D.The symptom of depression is spending too much time online. |
A.The researchers surveyed the teens from 16 to 20. |
B.The teens surveyed only answered health-related questions. |
C.The teens only answered how many hours were spent online. |
D.Heavy Internet users refer to those online for over two hours every day. |
A.Boy and girl non-users have the same possibility to be depressed. |
B.The boy heavy users are less likely to suffer depression than girls. |
C.Among the non-users, girls are less likely to be depressed than boys. |
D.Boy heavy users are more likely to be depressed than girl heavy users. |
A.Because the individuals surveyed lied. |
B.Because teenagers were likely to cheer up. |
C.Because teenagers online can often connect with their friends. |
D.Because the survey didn’t take necessary factors into consideration. |

Most of us mistake the value of feelings or shy away from those with seemingly negative meanings. We don’t really consider what these feelings might be trying to tell us.
Emotions show up in all parts of our lives, but sometimes expressing them can come with a lot of shame. But when we refuse to face how we truly feel, we risk not recognizing the signs that our needs are not being met.
This special edition is devoted to deepening an all-around understanding of our emotional experience, from the powerful ways joy can help fight against burnout (倦怠), to the inspiration (启发) we can get from connecting with other generations.
Many of us will have first-hand experience of wanting to hide away from so-called negative emotions, but we want to stress the fact that there is no such thing! From our columnist Michelle Elman’s personal experience with survivor’s guilt (内疚), to dealing with guilt-inspiring situations, and reviewing our ideas of anger, there should be no shame in whatever it is you are feeling!
Every emotion has value and the ability to teach us something. Recognizing varieties of our moods allows us to appreciate different sides of life, and truly value all parts of the human experience. Without moments of joy, we couldn’t experience and appreciate the beauty of the world; without moments of sadness, we couldn’t grasp the limitless value of love and satisfaction.
So, wherever you are on the emotional stage, know it won’t last forever, and there should be no shame or hiding. Allow yourself to feel it all.
As Yogi Berra so artfully put it: “Whatever you do, you should do it with feelings.”

【推荐3】Many of us were told from an early age that, “you learn from your mistakes”. But is this actually true?
The short answer is “yes” — failure can be a teachable moment. But learning from our mistakes is, in reality, very hard because we don’t like to fail. It doesn’t feel good, so we react to failure in impulsive and emotional ways, like giving up on a task prematurely, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding fault with the task itself. This is self-protective, according to Hallgeir, a professor of psychology at the Norwegian School of Economics. “Most of us want to think of ourselves as competent”, he says, so when we fail “it poses a serious threat to our self-image”.
Fortunately, there is research to suggest that there are some strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers around failure. One of them is to adopt a third-person perspective. Instead of asking “Why did I fail?”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail?”, for example. Multiple studies by psychologist Ethan Kross at the University of Michigan show that adopting a third-person perspective helps to soften our negative emotional reactions, allowing us to look at failure more objectively.
A second strategy involves offering advice to others who may be in the same position as us. This strategy led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups — involving both adults and children — that were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professors Eskreis-Winkler and Duckworth found that the satisfaction of helping others “forces people to engage with their experience and what they have learned”.
The writer Samuel Beckett once said: “fail again, fail better”. But it now seems that we should be saying: “fail again, fail smarter”. Failure is an unavoidable part of life, but by learning to overcome the emotional barriers around it, we may find the road to success is a little easier to navigate (确定方向).

In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed an act to allow autonomous vehicles on the roads of his state. “Today we’re looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality-the driverless car. ” The technology for these cars includes cameras, radar and motion sensors. The systems have been improved through competitions sponsored by the U. S. government agency DARPA. Engineer Richard Mason of the Rand Corporation helped design driverless vehicles for DARPA challenge races.
Cars have become much more fuel-efficient, and new electronic features are' making Hondas safer, said Angie Nucci of Honda America. “A camera on the passenger-side mirror actually engaged on your guiding screen so you can safely change lanes. ” Other safety features include warning systems on the front and the sides of the cars. These systems help drivers , but don’t replace them. Curator Leslie Kendall of the Petersen Automotive Museum said autonomous cars will make the high ways safer.
“By taking out drivers, you also remove most risks of an accident, ”Kendall said. He said , “Consumers, however, may be unwilling to lose control. It may take them time to come to realize that the technology is indeed reliable, but it will have to prove itself first. ”
Mason said the technology already works and the biggest challenge now is getting down the cost for driverless vehicles from hundreds of thousands of dollars to something more affordable. He said this will happen as the technology is improved.

That's the finding of a psychological study building on previous research which found that the wealthy people value the ability to control the outcome of different events compared to lower-income people.
Donations from high earners were 1.5 times larger when researchers tailored(定制)the words of letters requesting financial support to play on this desire.
Experts from Harvard University wrote to 12,000 alumni of an Ivy League business school—who were earning $ 100,000 (£ 80,000) per year or more—asking them to donate to the school. Two sets of letters were sent out—one saying the “community” needed to take action, while the other called on individual action. The letter were phrased respectively as "Sometimes, one community needs to come forward and support a common goal" or "Sometimes, one person needs to come forward and take individual action”.
Respondents to the second letter gave $ 432 (£ 340) on average compared to the $ 270 (£ 215) average from the first group.
New Scientist Ashley Whillans, who led the research, said, "We think that giving high-income earners a sense of control makes them want to give more.”

Last month, Russian furniture giant MZ5 Group announced that it was taking application for a new position—full time sofa tester. Although all new products are tested in a specialized laboratory, management decided that in order to better meet the needs of consumers it needed some feedback on real-life use of its sofas. In just a few days, MZ5 received over 5,000 job applications from people eager to spend most of their time sitting and lying on sofas.
“We were selecting candidates in several stages,” MZ5 Group spokesperson Anastasia Russkih said, “Initially we checked their resumes, and then we let them tell us why they wanted the job.” Eventually, the furniture company shortlisted just 7 candidates, among whom Anna Cherdantseva, a 26-year-old marketing expert, proved to be the most suitable for the job.
