I did an experiment last week. No, nothing involving test tubes or beakers (烧杯). Instead, I experimented with not watching the news right before I went to bed.
This is a long-time habit of mine so it’s probably not surprising that the first couple of nights I got a little twitchy when news time rolled around and I wasn’t watching. To distract myself, I went to bed a little earlier and read. Wow, what a treat that was! I love to read but I don’t always make the time for it so this felt quite luxurious. On the nights I didn’t read, I spent a little extra time petting my dog, Henry. He loved it. There’s never enough ear scratching for him. The compromise nights were when I had a book in one hand and was petting the dog with the other. Happy all around!
The funny thing about happiness is that it’s a whole lot easier to feel when you’re not being bombarded (轰炸) by images of bad news. It’s not like skipping the late news means that I don’t know what’s going on in the world. I still do read, listen to, and watch news stories. Just not right before I go to bed. That makes it easier to fall asleep and then stay asleep without dreaming about crime, wars, or natural disasters. (Although that dream I had about going to the prom might count as a natural disaster!) It’s definitely a much gentler way to end the day. I like it so much that I’m going to not only continue the no news before bed practice, but I’m also going to experiment with turning off other electronics earlier in the evening, things like the computer and smart phone.
Do you have any experience with turning off your electronics early in the evening? Does setting a particular time, like digital Quiet Hours, work? Please share any tips you have. Something tells me that this could be a little more challenging for me than no news.

Many wonderful friends from the past surprised us with presents and congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove from Ontario into Alberta, then southward into Glacier National Park in Montana and continued to Yellowstone National Park.
It was a cold spring day and the Beartooth Highway had opened for the season just days before. Along side the road there was still a great amount of snow remaining. The scenery was so impressive that we made numerous stops to record memories with my camera. At almost the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views with my wife in the center of my camera lens (镜头).
There were not many vehicles on the road. Occasionally cars with energetie young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motoreyele in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle in rags (衣衫褴褛) parked behind our car. As he approached us his only words were, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us handed back my camera and rode off before we could express our gratitude. The photo he took is one of the most cherished and prized of our trip.
I learned my lesson in the journey. We should never judge a man by his appearanee. If the motoreyele driver reads this story and remembers the situation we would like to say “thank you” to him.

Caterina Alagna and Melissa Fodera gave birth to baby girls 15 minutes apart as the clock ticked toward midnight. When it was time for the mothers and newborns to head home, Alagna and Fodera both questioned why the babies weren’t wearing the clothing they’d brought, but the hospital workers told them with certainty that it was only a clothing snafu.
Three years later, as Alagna was picking up her daughter Melissa from nursery school, she saw something that shook her completely. Another child, Caterina by name, looked unbelievably like Alagna’s two other biological daughters. When she recognized the little girl’s mother Fodera as the woman she’d shared the hospital room with, the clothing incident popped up into her mind—and something clicked. The clothing hadn’t been switched...the babies had!
15 days later, DNA tests proved her doubt. It was a choice neither of them wanted to face. But rather than simply make the change back, the families decided it would be best to let everyone get used to the new situation slowly. Both girls and both sets of parents began spending time together in one house. The arrangement worked out so well that, when the two families separated on the advice of experts for a six-month experiment, the plan was quickly given up. The switch was explained to Melissa and Caterina when they were 8 years old. The only real problem they’ve faced is the problem with their legal names. Emotionally, however, the two girls, now grown into young adulthood, couldn’t be better.

Although slow and unsure of step, the woman moved with deliberation, and there was no hesitation in her gestures. And she had a job to do.
The elderly woman had walked into the store along with a younger woman who guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience, checking her watch every few seconds. The older woman detached from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled on a crumpled (皱巴巴的) piece of paper. The title was a bit difficult to understand. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality.
Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d departed this life last Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I narrated its floor plan. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation. We found the movie, and I complimented (称赞) her on her choice. Then, reluctantly, I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
I walked over to the younger woman. “Is that your mom?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah.” There was annoyance in her reply, half sigh and half complaint. Still watching the mother, I said, “Mind some advice?” “Sure,” said the daughter. I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she’s gone, it’s the little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I used to let it slip. I know.”

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.
E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.
The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun , see a great movie perhaps-and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.
With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mail is also an inexpensive way stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.
We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.

It may seem like a trivial activity, but it has slowly moved into the center of conversation on the future of business and sustainable development.
Waste sorting is a complex phenomenon that can be an important step toward a global circular economy. Maybe it even will be something we will look back on as one of the first steps toward an ecological society.
But sorting of waste could also mean participating in an activity that undermines sustainable development by allowing unsustainable companies to use recycling as a way to pretend they are sustainable.
When Royal Dutch Shell, a British-Dutch oil and gas company, wanted to dump an oil rig in the ocean in 1995, many people in Europe had just started to separate glass bottles and newspapers. The company’s plan was viewed as a sign of arrogance. The incident led to an important meeting, after which many companies started including environmental factors in their risk assessment.
The situation is different today. It is no longer clear if the kind of waste sorting done in Western nations is part of the problem or the solution. There are areas where the sorting of waste is working reasonably well, for example the glass and metal industries. But at a time when we are looking at a transformative system change and global sustainability, there is a need to fundamentally rethink waste sorting.
In the coming decades, the world needs to eliminate the use of fossil fuels, become more resource-efficient, lift billions out of poverty and ensure greater equity(公正). In order to ensure this, we need a resource-efficient circular economy, and waste sorting can play a key role. But that would be a very different kind of waste sorting.
People around the world have begun to realize that much of the waste they sort is not integrated in sustainable material flows, but instead shipped to poor countries, where it is not handled in an appropriate manner. As more countries refuse to become dumping grounds for the unsustainable lifestyles of rich countries, a healthy discussion about global sustainability has begun to emerge.
Out of the waste that is recycled, much of it is turned into low-value goods in a way that does not result in a radically reduced use of natural resources. Instead, recycling initiatives are used by companies selling low-quality goods that are not made to last.
A waste sorting system for the 21st century should build on the opportunities that digitalization provides and allow citizens to track what is happening to the waste they are sorting and also provide information about the companies they have purchased products from.
It should also require companies to show how resource-efficient their solutions are, allowing consumers to compare options.
It is time to understand that Western recycling systems, to a large extent, are used by unsustainable companies that produce everything from fast fashion to unhealthy fast food.
China could initiate the next generation of waste sorting systems—those that support hyper-transparency and move away from the systems in the West that are contributing to reduced transparency. Such a waste sorting system would be a driver for innovation and extreme resource efficiency and a true step toward ecological civilization.

One of the reasons they tend to be formulaic is that to tell a love story in roughly an hour and a half without challenging an audience’s settled expectations, there are only so many ways to go with the rhythm. Perhaps that’s why Netflix has better luck with Dash&Lily, an eight-episode limited series that’s got the charm that a lot of holiday films lack.
Our story begins when a lonely Lily leaves an interesting note in a book on the shelf at The Strand, hoping a stranger will start an adventure with her. Dash finds it and reads it, and he accepts its challenge. Thus begins a correspondence in which they each write in the book and then leave it somewhere for the other, so that they never meet in person, but they get to send each other to their favorite places, sometimes to complete dares before the book can be found. Now, you do not want to think too carefully about this——the idea that Lily’s original clue would be found by an age—appropriate straight boy who likes mysteries and looks like he was born to be in adaptations almost as much as she does is the height of magic, so just stay relaxed and go with it.
These eight episodes, each around 25 minutes, never drag; they fly by joyfully. The ending, as is often the case with love stories, sort of lands with a cloud of glitter, a little messy but worth cheering for. It’s as lovely and comfortable as you could want, just about perfect for a weekend with a blanket over you.

With people not coming in to the lab or staying only long enough to conduct their experiments, we lost our sense of interpersonal connection. Then, in July, our director shared that she had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer.
In the wake of that shocking announcement, one of the center’s group leaders suggested we send our director weekly good news to keep her informed and to try to lift her spirits. One week later, we sent the first email.
The effect of this simple newsletter — which went to our director and all the group members as well as leaders — was significant. “I love good news time,” a colleague wrote, “It really is uplifting.”
These days, we solicit good news every Wednesday and send out an email every Friday. The process and format are simple and no-frills, making the newsletter sustainable. Good news includes securing grants and fellowships, much-needed new computers arriving, a student submitting their thesis, publishing papers, becoming parents, turning 40, and — of course — growing roses on one’s balcony.
Last month, one group leader’s good news was that, after breaking his arm, he finally had his cast(石膏)removed. The next week, he reported that his daughter broke her arm, saying that the number of broken bones in his family is a conserved quantity. It wasn’t exactly good news, but it did make me laugh quietly. Equally important, sharing it helps us stay connected in these difficult times.

The paper was written by team members of China's Tianwen-1 Mars mission, which aims to send an orbiter and a rover to the Red Planet.
The study reveals new details about Tianwen-1, outlining its intended landing area, science goals and the names of instruments aboard the spacecraft. It also stresses the historic nature of the mission: Not only is Tianwen-1 China's first fully homegrown Mars mission, it's also the first to carry both an orbiter and a rover.
Tianwen-1 means "questions to heaven“ and was taken from the title of a poem by Qu Yuan (340 — 278 BC). The spacecraft will reach Mars in February 2021, at the same time as NASA's Perseverance rover and the United Arab Emirates5 Hope orbiter launched on Sunday (July 19). However, China's rover will remain attached to the orbiter for two to three months before attempting its landing, according to the paper.
The chosen landing area is Utopia Planitia, a huge basin formed by a large impact far back in Mars' history that was also the region where NASA's Viking 2 lander touched down in 1976. China had isolated a part of the vast plain as a landing area, which means there will be more time and atmosphere for the entry spacecraft to slow down and safely land on the surface. The latitude is also suitable for receiving enough sunlight to power the 240 kilograms rover. The relatively smooth surface will also be helpful for roving. The mission also benefits from the engineering heritage of China's Chang'e lunar exploration program, the paper noted.
The Tianwen-1 orbiter will operate in a polar orbit in order to map Mars. The rover will also investigate the surface soil characteristics and water-ice distribution with its own Subsurface Exploration Radar. It will also analyze surface material composition and characteristics of the Martian climate and environment on the surface.
1. What's the purpose of the passage?A.To lay out key details about Tianwen-1. |
B.To state how Tianwen-1 was invented. |
C.To stress the historic meaning of Tianwen-1. |
D.To analyze characteristics of the Martian climate. |
A.It was named after Qu Yuan, a famous poet in Chinese history. |
B.It will reach Mars at the same time as NASA's Viking 2. |
C.It will remain for 2 or 3 months on Mars. |
D.It will complete orbiting and roving in a Mars mission. |
A.The rare air there is suitable for the flight of Tianwen. |
B.The area can protect Tianwen-1 from too much sunlight. |
C.It has relatively smooth surface, which is helpful for roving. |
D.There is no spacecraft successfully landing there in history. |

If it was a fine day, he would take me to the park where he told me the names of the flowers and trees. Sometimes, we would go shopping together. He would push the cart and I would help him get things off the shelves. He always found ways to involve me in what he was doing. I was his “little helper”. Grandpa taught me to care about the world by having me help with the gardening. He watered the trees and bushes, while I watered the flowers. We fed the birds. He showed me that if you were really quiet and stayed still, the birds would come up to you. I still love feeding birds and never understand people who get so wrapped up in owning a home that they don’t stop to care for the surrounding wildlife.
For an after-school snack, my grandfather would give me boiled potatoes and carrots with a little bit of butter on them or he would cut up some fresh fruit for me. My mother was so strict that she held that I must finish my homework as soon as I got home from school. Grandpa thought it was more important to relax, so he would let me watch one show first. He had his way and the way worked. And he said, “Were I you, I wouldn’t tell your mother, or you won’t have time to relax.” Whenever I left a room, Grandpa would remind me to turn off the light to save electricity. My grandpa was a devoted family man. He helped my parents through really tough financial times.
