In England, some food companies across the whole country have been told to carry out urgent (紧急的) tests on all beef products. Do you know why? That’s because some food companies used horse meat to make beef products.
There are some examples about the horse meat matter. In January, 2013, in a number of UK supermarkets, frozen hamburgers were found to havetracesof horse meat in them. Some frozen beef products made by food company FINDUS were found to contain horse meat. All of the beef products made by this company have been removed from sale.
The government said that there’s nothing to suggest any health risk from the products. Food minister David Heath said people should not throw away frozen meat products and carry on eating meat. The government will tell people not to eat meat if the meat is not safe.
Food safety has been an important matter all over the world. More and more countries plan to take some useful measures to ensure the safety of food.

Well, Mom may be right about most things, but she isn’t right about all snacks. There is actually a healthy way to snack.
The first rule about snacking is to make your own. Don’t buy snacks that are already wrapped and sold in stores.
The second rule about snacking is to eat things that take longer for your body to process. Things like bread and crackers (饼干) are processed quickly by your body.
With one or two snack breaks during your day, you will probably find that you eat less at lunch and dinner.

But a study published in Neuroscience& Biobehavioral Reviews suggests that sugar can make us feel worse rather than boost our moods.
The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1, 300 adults. They studied the effect of sugar on various aspects of the mood, including anger, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense (强烈的) over time.
According to the researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short period of feeling good. However, as they begin to digest (消化) the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling.
To remain on a “high”, people are likely to eat more and more sugar until they become addicted to it. As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people feeling tired.
But the study findings don’t mean we must give up sweet food altogether. According to the World Health Organization, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, as long as these make up less than 5 percent of daily total energy intake.
So the next time you feel tired and can’t concentrate, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar.

For those who live in a fast food fantasy world, eating it every day, believing that it is fast, convenient and inexpensive, it can be catastrophic(灾难性的).
Contrary to being cheap, fast food is very expensive on many levels. To start with, a home-cooked nutritious meal will cost a lot less than any fast food meal and you will know exactly what ingredients are in your food.
However, the expense is not only in terms of the money you spend at the restaurant. There are hidden costs. Not only does it cost money to pay for the petrol to go and get this nutritionally poor food, but also it is very wasteful of paper, plastic and styrene(苯乙烯),all of which do serious damage to the environment: plastic and styrene cannot be got rid of, but break up into small particles(颗粒)and end up in our water supply or our air, and therefore our food chain. It is a very serious circle.
Besides not being good for you, fast food is also addictive(上瘾的). The more you eat, the more you want, and so, more and more kids are suffering from fatness. Fast food restaurants have become a favorite hangout for teens, and not just for something to eat. If fast food was designed to be quick and easy, why do many of them have cafes, a WiFi zone and an eat-in restaurant? Those are not things a person in a hurry would use. The goal now is trying to attract customers to stay longer and thus spend more money. Their marketing is aimed at attracting kids because they are the ones who have money to spend and are customers of the future.
Fast food is dangerous to your health, hard on your wallet, addictive and harmful to the environment. Through the power of the melia(媒体),children, teens and adults are attracted to “fit in and be cool” ,be part of the fast throwaway lifestyle it promotes. How to resist the hype(促销广告)? Just take a good look at the results on those who eat it. Then look at yourself.

The word “robot” was coined in 1920 by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, who imagined artificial, fully functional servants. For most of their history, however, robots have been silent, inelegant devices sitting out of sight in factories.
Things are starting to change, however. Robots have benefited from rapid innovations in smartphones, which brought cameras, sensors and wireless communications.
And yet many people fear that robots will destroy jobs.
For all that, the march of the robots will bring big changes to workplaces.
The potential gains from the robot revolution are huge. In Capek’s play, the robots revolt against their human masters and cause mass unemployment and worse. The beginnings of the worlds real robots have not matched Capek’s satire (讽刺). There is no reason to think that their future needs to either.

Researchers who wanted to see whether children would give up their food to give it to a stranger without encouragement found the kids just did that — even when they were hungry.
The scientists recruited 96 19-month-old children. During the experiments, a child and a researcher sat across from each other. In the control group, the researcher threw a piece of fruit onto a plate beyond reach, but the child could reach. The researcher showed no expression and made no attempt to get the fruit back. In contrast, the researcher in the test group pretended to accidentally drop the fruit on the plate, and then reach for it unsuccessfully. This signaled to the opposite child that the adult wanted the fruit. Among the test group, 58 percent of the children picked up the fruit and gave it to the adult, compared to 4% in the control group.
Next, the team explored if children would still be generous when the cost was raised. The same scenes as the experiment above were repeated with a separate group of kids before their lunchtime, when they were likely to be hungry. Similarly, 37 percent of the test group handed over the fruit, compared with none in the control group.
The experiments were repeated four times. Researchers got similar results each time. Babies with siblings (兄弟姐妹) and babies from Latino or Asian families shared more of the fruit, the team also found.
Carter Morgan, lead professor of the study, said, “We often think of babies as selfish persons. But here we find that they are willing to help others even when it comes at some ‘cost’ to themselves.” Addressing why children with siblings or from certain cultural backgrounds were more likely to share, Morgan said , “ We believe this partly reflects what social psychologists call ‘interdependence’, which stresses the importance of interpersonal connections. These social experiences that shape attitudes towards sharing appear to have an effect very early in life.”

Now, ecologists know that this synchronized group flight is a result of a democratic (民主的) process in which the majority of the flock reaches a consensus about the birds’ actions, such as their mass departure.
Jackdaws fly into the sky in huge numbers and then split into smaller groups to feed. To figure out how such large numbers of these birds decide when to take off, researchers from the University of Exeter recorded jackdaws’ calls over several months. They recorded when the first jackdaws began their calls and measured how loud the birds were. The team found that jackdaws left together once the chorus of calls reached a critical mass — the more rapidly the chorus swelled, the earlier the birds left.
“They all leave together, which is a really striking sight,” Alex Thornton said. Every call signals a jackdaw casting its vote to leave. When the intensity of the chorus doesn’t build enough, which means the jackdaws don’t agree, the birds depart in smaller groups instead.
The team also found that once jackdaws reached a consensus they departed almost immediately, with thousands of jackdaws taking off in less than five seconds. When scientists played past recordings of calls back to the jackdaws, they were able to push forward the birds’ launching by more than six minutes. However, other noise recordings, like the sound of a whipping wind, had no effect on the birds’ departure time.
Leaving together has various benefits, including protection from enemies and access to information such as where to find food. This research shows the critical role birdcalls play in group decision-making for this species. But the mission is not over yet. Researchers’ concern is that human activities might disturb jackdaws. “Imagine a flock near a busy road,” Thornton said. “If the birds can’t hear each other and can’t form a consensus on the time to leave together, it can have big impacts on their population. The next stage of our research will look into this.”
1. When will jackdaws’ mass departure most probably take place?A.When their calls reach high intensity. |

Several car manufacturers are already integrating 5G into their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of sel-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50million people injured worldwide every year, will drop drastically (彻底地) as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what's around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.”
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford revealed its intention to fit 80 percent of its 2020 vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.

Our eyes let us see because light enters each eye, and the eye then creates a message that goes to the brain. The eyeball itself doesn’t actually “see”—the brain sees. The eyeballs just take pictures, like two little cameras. To see properly, each eyeball needs to send the light that enters it into a very exact spot inside the eyeball, called the retina(视网膜). If the light falls onto the incorrect place, everything goes wrong.
Many people won’t need glasses and can see just fine. This is because their eyeballs are focusing light properly onto the retina. However, some people have eyeballs that are too long. They are called “shortsighted”. For these people, things far away can look blurry(模糊的). Other people have eyeballs that are too short. They are called “farsighted” and things close to them can look blurry. Both shortsighted and farsighted people need glasses to help them see clearly. They work by helping the eyeball to focus light onto the correct place, the retina. Only then can we see clearly.
Maybe you have a grandma or grandpa who wears whenever they are reading books or using their mobile phone. When people get older, they usually become a little bit farsighted because a part of their eye called the lens becomes stiff and doesn’t work properly.
More and more young people in the world are needing to wear glasses. we’re not sure why, but some scientists think that children who spend too much time inside are more likely to need glasses. Children who need glasses but don’t wear them don’t do as well as in school. Once you need glasses, you usually need them forever—your eyes won’t go back to normal on their own.
I hope that one day we can find out why people’s eyeballs become too long or too short and then we can stop people needing to wear glasses in the first place. Then people will never lose or forget their glasses ever again!

Ingredients
● 1/2 cup olive oil
● 1/4 cup coconut oil with natural SPF (sun protection factor)
● 1/4 cup beeswax
● 2 tablespoons zine oxide (This is a version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to breathe into the powder)
● Optional: up to 1 teaspoon red raspberry seed of
● Optional: up to l teaspoon carrot seed oil
● Optional: up to l teaspoon vitamin E oil
● Optional: essential oils, vanilla extractor other natural extracts to suit your preference
Instructions
Combine ingredients except zine oxide in a larger glass jar. I have a mason jar (see Fig. 1) that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from foods.
Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.
Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.
As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to mix. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zine oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar on tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!
Store in a cool dry place or in the fridge.
Use you use regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.
Additional Notes:
● Beeswax is for water protection. This sunscreen is somewhat, but not completely, waterproof and will need to be reapplied after sweating or swimming.
● Make sure not to breathe in the zine oxide — use a mask if necessary!
● This recipe has an SPF of about 15, though adding more zine oxide will increase the SPF.
● Add more beeswax to make thicker sunscreen, less to make smooth sunscreen.
● I recommend coco mt or vanilla extract for sweet smell.
● I prefer to store in a small can nig jar and apply like a body butter. It will be thicker, especially if you use coconut oil in the recipe.
● Remove the zine oxide and this makes an excellent lotion recipe!
1. What is the function of Zine oxide, a necessary ingredient when making natural sunscreen?A.It will be absorbed into the skin. | B.It is added for water protection. |
C.It makes the sunscreen’s SPE greater. | D.It makes an excellent lotion recipe. |
A.Among all the optional ingredients, essential oils or natural extracts help add a sweet smell to the sunscreen. |
B.It’s not adequate to apply the sunscreen only once if one wants to swim in the pool. |

D.Zine oxide, which is dangerous to breathe in, should be put before other ingredients because it can be covered. |
A.To mix up all ingredients in a jar. | B.To remove the zine oxide. |
C.To melt everything except zine oxide. | D.To add zine oxide and stir in well. |
【推荐3】Jerome H.Powell, the Federal Reserve chair, suggested on Wednesday that improved child care support policies from the government might help pull more women into the labor market.
“Our peers, our competitors, advanced economy western countries, have a more built-up function for child care, and they wind up having much higher labor force participation for women,” Mr. Powell said, “We used to lead the world in female labor force participation, a quarter-century ago, and we no longer do. ”
But Mr.Powell did voice qualified support for a few broader ideas. He made it clear that the labor market remained far from healed, that the pandemic's economic outcome has largely hurt women and minorities since the winter of 2020, and that both Congress and the central bank have a role to play in supporting working-class families until the economy has recovered more fully. As Mr. Powell implied, adult women in the United States hold jobs or look for them at lower rates than women in some other major advanced economies, such as Canada or Germany.
Research has suggested that the change may be linked to child care policies. In a 2018 paper that asked why the share of Canadians who work or look for jobs had climbed even as United States labor force attachment had fallen, researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco pointed out that most of the gap owed to different outcomes for women. And they pointed to caregiving policy differences as a likely reason.
“Parental leave policies in Canada provide strong motivation to remain attached to the labor force following the arrival of a new child," the paper, written by the San Francisco Fed president,Mary C. Daly, and co-authors,pointed out.“The contrast between the motivations Canada and the United States offer prime-age workers to remain attached to the labor force is clear.”
The fact that child care responsibilities fall heavily on women in the United States has come under a brighter spotlight during the pandemic, which has shuttered schools and disproportionately left women bearing added child care responsibilities during the traditional workday.
