It was a painful time for me, for I suffered from an illness and might never be able to have a child. As my 40th birthday approached, I began, for the first time, to notice babies and their happy, smiling mothers wherever I went.
One night, I came to a cafe to kill the boring time. An elegantly dressed, sightly older woman was seated next to me.
“Would you like to see a picture of my daughter?” she asked me, handing me a photo of a smiling Chinese girl. The child was about seven years old and was wearing a Snow White costume. That's Melanie, now in the first grade," she said. I could hear the motherly pride in her voice. “She's pretty,” I said. "I love her costume." The woman explained that she felt strongly about teaching her daughter about Chinese customs and maintaining ties to her shoes. “What made you decide to adopt her?" I asked. "I didn't want work to be my whole life," she said.
I'm not sure if she saw the tears in my eyes as I replied, I don't either, but I'm afraid it's too late." I was 51 when I adopted Melanie, she said. "And it's the most rewarding, exciting thing I've ever done."
When my husband and I returned from China with our nine-month-old daughter, Madeline, in November 2017, Jill was one of the first people I e-mailed. I did it!" I wrote. “I’m a mother and she's beautiful"
“Congratulations,” she wrote back. We recently reconnected on Facebook, and I told her, “You changed my life.”

As Ahmed was very small, his mother worried that the money would get stolen. So she stitched(缝)a small pocket beneath the right sleeve of his shirt near his underarm and hid the money there. Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur (创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He suggested that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her dad’s agreement, she spent the next two years researching online to get a candy that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also went to dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. In the end, she succeeded in making a kind of candy product — Cancandy.
Quickly, Cancandy sells very good in the supermarket. As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s popularity as a young entrepreneur. Moore is excited about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven by profit (利润) .

The count was examining the weapons, when his study door opened, and Baptistin entered, making a sign to him, and went out, closing the door after him.”Who are you, madame?” said the count to the veiled woman ①.
The woman cast one look around her, to be certain that they were quite alone; then bending as if she would have knelt, and joining her hands, she said with an accent of despair, “Edmond, you will not kill my son?” The count retreated a step, uttered a slight exclamation ②.
“What name did you pronounce then, Madame de Morcerf?” said he. “Yours!” cried she, throwing back her veil,” yours, which I alone, perhaps, have not forgotten. Edmond, it is not Madame de Morcerf who is come to you, it is Mercédès.”
“Mercédès is dead, madame,” said the count; “I know no one now of that name.”
“Mercédès lives, sir, and she needs not to inquire what hand has dealt the blow which now strikes M.de Morcerf.”
“Fernand, do you mean?” replied the count, with bitter irony; “since we are recalling names, let us remember them all.” the count had pronounced the name of Fernand with such an expression of hatred that Mercédès felt a thrill of horror run through every vein. “You see, Edmond, I am not mistaken, and have cause to say, ‘Spare my son!’”
“And who told you, madame, that I have any hostile intentions against your son?”
“No one, in truth; but a mother has twofold sight. I guessed all; I followed him this evening and have seen all.”
“If you have seen all, madame, you know that the son of Fernand has publicly insulted me,” said the count with awful calmness.
“Oh, for pity’s sake! my son has also guessed who you are, he attributes his father’s misfortunes to you.”
“Madame, you are mistaken, they are not misfortunes, it is a punishment. It is not I who strike M. de Morcerf; it is providence which punishes him.” The count took out a letter with his hands which proved his innocence and Fernand’s sin.
“That is what I heard on leaving my prison fourteen years after I had entered it; and that is why, on account of the living Mercédès and my father, I have sworn to revenge myself on Fernand, andI have revenged myself.”
“And you are sure the unhappy Fernand did that?”
“I am satisfied, madame, that he did what I have told you; besides, that is not much more odious than that a Frenchman by adoption should pass over to the English; that a Spaniard by birth should have fought against the Spaniards; that a stipendiary of Ali should have betrayed and murdered Ali. Compared with such things, what is the letter you have just read?a deception! Well, the French did not avenge themselves on the traitor, the Spaniards did not shoot the traitor, Ali in his tomb left the traitor unpunished; but I, betrayed, sacrificed, buried, have risen from my tomb, by the grace of God, to punish that man, and here I am.” The poor woman’s head and arms fell; her legs bent under her, and she fell on her knees. “Forgive, Edmond, forgive for my sake, who love you still!”
“Not crush that accursed race?” murmured he; “abandon my purpose at the moment of its accomplishment? Impossible, madame, impossible!”
“Edmond,” said the poor mother, who tried every means, “when I call you Edmond, why do you not call me Mercédès?”
“Mercédès!” repeated the count ③, “Mercédès! Well yes, you are right; Mercédès, I have uttered your name with the sigh of melancholy, with the groan of sorrow, with the last effort of despair; I have uttered it, consumed with heat, rolling on the stone floor of my prison. Mercédès, I must revenge myself, for I suffered fourteen years, fourteen years I wept, I cursed; now I tell you, Mercédès, I must revenge myself.”
“Revenge yourself, then, Edmond,” cried the poor mother; “but let your vengeance fall on the culprits,on him, on me, but not on my son!”
“God said that the sins of the fathers shall fall upon their children to the third and fourth generation. Since God himself dictated those words to his prophet, why should I seek to make myself better than God?”
“Edmond,” continued Mercédès, with her arms extended towards the count, “since I first knew you, I have adored your name, have respected your memory. But I have thought you must be dead! What could I do for you, Edmond, besides pray and weep? Edmond, for ten years I saw every night every detail of that frightful tragedy, and for ten years I heard every night the cry which awoke me, shuddering and cold. And I, too, Edmondoh! believe meguilty as I wasoh, yes, I, too, have suffered much!”
“Have you known what it is to have your father starve to death in your absence?” cried the count, ④thrusting his hands into his hair”have you seen the woman you loved giving her hand to your rival, while you were dying?”
“No,” interrupted Mercédès, “but I have seen him whom I loved on the point of murdering my son.” Mercédès uttered these words with such deep anguish, with an accent of such intense despair, that the count could not restrain a sob. The lion was daunted; the avenger was conquered.

So when I announced I wanted to be a tennis champion when I grew up, I just intended for them to notice me. My mother laughed. She knew I couldn't possibly be serious, I was just a 4-year-old kid!
Later, I joined the club's junior coaching group and eventually took part in my first proper contest, confident that my team would do well. We won, which was fantastic, but I wasn't so successful. I didn't even want to be in the team photo because I didn't feel I deserved to be. When my coach asked what happened in my final match, I didn't know what to say. I couldn't believe I'd lost. I thought I was the better player. But every time I attacked, the other player defended well. I couldn't explain the result.
After that, I decided to listen more carefully to my coach because he had lots of tips. I realised that I need the right attitude to be a winner. On court I have a plan but sometimes the other guy will do something unexpected so I'll change it. If I lose a point, I do my best to forget it and find a way to win the next one.
At tournaments, it's impossible to avoid players who explode in anger. Lots of players can be negative, including myself sometimes. I felt angry and nearly broke my racket! But my coach has helped me develop ways to control those feelings. After all, the judges have a hard job and you just have to accept their decisions.
My coach demands that I train in the gym to make sure I'm strong right to the end of a tournament. I'm getting good results: my shots are more accurate and there's a chance that I could be a champion one day with hard work.

Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man’s discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting deliberately and began to argue.
“She is being spiteful (恶意的) !” he yelled. “This is unbelievable.”
Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who accompanied him to customer service. Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line.
We’ve all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. The grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has eroded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith-starting with just one person.
Back at the grocery store, my wife and I reached our uneasy cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. “We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you.” I said. Her face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.
Those are the balancing acts, the moments of responding social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restore trust among people. You can start that pattern in someone else’s life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.

I’d read The Lord of the Rings and gone into the adult section of the library to be buried in fantasy literature. I was young enough to still hold out hope that I might find a book of real, actual magic in the library. The book I found instead taught basic techniques, and I tried to practice.
At first the magic wasn’t any good. It was just a trick—a bad trick. I spent hours each day running through the secret moves in front of the mirror. I dropped the coin over and over, a thousand times in a day. After two weeks my mom got a carpet and placed it under the mirror to muffle the sound of the coin falling again and again.
One day I made the coin disappear on the playground. We had been playing football and were standing in the field behind the school. A dozen people were watching. I showed the coin to everyone. Then it disappeared. The kids screamed. Everyone went crazy.
A few years later, I staged an underwater escape in the river that flowed through the middle of the campus of the University of Iowa, where I went to school. I stood on a boat in the middle of the river wearing nothing but biking shorts. The sky was dead and gray, and the water was cold at the surface, and colder in the depths below.
Technically, I succeeded. I jumped into the water, sank to the bottom, and escaped from the locks and the chains before swimming to the surface. But it didn’t feel like a success.

Studies have shown that the act of laughing can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve immune function(免疫功能).
Not only that, but laughter can also provide benefits similar to that of an anti-depressant. When you laugh, your body releases endorphins(内啡肽)which results in a general feeling of health and well-being. Regular laughter can play a role in helping you to avoid many health problems. Thus, not only do women tend to laugh more than men, they are also more likely to "have the last laugh".
According to a study conducted at the Stanford University of Medicine, gender( 性别)can affect the way that a person's brain responds to humor. The study, which involved the monitoring of 10 men and 10 women watching cartoons, shows that women are more likely than their male peers to use the part of the brain that processes rewards. It seemed that women had lower expectations in regard to a reward (in this case, the reward being the punch-line of the joke or cartoon), which resulted in them enjoying the experience more than the men. Men, on the other hand, seemed to expect that they would find the cartoons humorous, and were therefore more likely to be disappointed and find them less amusing.
Women are more likely to respond to men whom they find humorous and men seem to recognize this and do their best to make women laugh. It has been shown that women are more likely to laugh in the presence of men whom they have an attraction towards and men are more likely to be attracted to women who laugh in their presence because it makes them feel more desirable. Obviously, it is more important to men that a woman appreciates their humor.
1. The studies show that regular laughter can ______.A.raise blood pressure | B.keep us nervous |
C.make immune function worse | D.keep us healthy and happy |
A.Because they like telling humorous stories. | B.Because they like watching cartoons. |

For years, educators have thought the strongest predictor(预示物) of attaining high levels of education was having parents who were highly educated. But, the study showed that the difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as the difference between having parents who are barely literate (有文化的) and having parents who have a university education.
Being a sociologist, Evans was particularly interested to find that children of less-educated parents benefit the most from having books in the home. What kinds of investments should we make to help these kids get ahead? The results of this study indicate that getting some books into their homes is an inexpensive way that we can help these children succeed. Evans said, “Even a little bit goes a long way. Having as few as 20 books in the home still has a significant impact on motivating a child to a higher level of education, and the more books you add, the greater benefit the children get.”
The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children's educational attainment even above and beyond such factors as education level of the parents, the father's occupation or the economic level of the country.
Having books in the home is twice as important as the father's education level, and more important than whether a child was brought up in a developing country or a developed country. Surprisingly, the difference in educational attainment for children born in a developed country and children born in a developing country was just 2 years, less than two-thirds of the effect that having 500 or more books in the home had on children.
1. In the past educators held a point of view that ______ .A.children whose family had a library would possibly attain high levels of education |

It provides riverboats as the means of transportation and the opportunity for romantic walks. In addition, lots of Paris’ tourist attractions are located on both sides of the river, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and so on.
The Basics
One of the best ways to see the Seine is to walk along it. You can also walk across the river on bridges to see some of the most well-known architecture(建筑) in France. Besides, a Seine River cruise (乘船游览) allows you to rest your legs and admire the same sights. If you book a lunch or dinner cruise, you can enjoy your sightseeing as well as a French meal.
Things to Know Before You Go
While you are running through Paris’ main tourist areas, the Seine River is hard to miss. You won’t have to go far to find it. More than 30 bridges cross the Seine within the city limits. You ought to wear comfortable shoes for walking along the banks and bridges. You had better be prepared for crowds on popular bridges like Pont des Arts.
When to Get There
For a peaceful walk, head to the river in the early morning hours before most of the crowds arrive. Or go for an after-dinner walk to take in the reflections (倒影) of the City of Light on the water.
Exploring Canal Saint-Martin
In northeast Paris, the Canal Saint-Martin is connected to the Seine River. It is home to smaller waterways. Instead of the Seine’s busy traffic and noisy tourists, there are some quiet footbridges and friendly locals here. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear over night. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts (轮班) in a factory, the other optionshave become only too clear. " This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading. " she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.

Google replied to the study with the following statement, “There are a number of different ways that Google may use location to improve people’s experience, including Location History, Web and App Activity, and through device-level Location Services. We provide clear descriptions of these tools, and strong controls so people can turn them on or off, and delete their histories at any time.”
That isn’t true. Even with Location History paused, some Google apps automatically store time-stamped location data without asking. The Associated Press has used location data from an Android smartphone with Location History turned off to design a map of the movements of Princeton researcher Gunes Acar. The news agency was able to track his movements and identify visited locations, including his home address.
“The privacy issue affects some two billion users of devices that run Google’s Android operating software and hundreds of millions of worldwide iPhone users who rely on Google for maps or search.” continues the Associated Press. Jonathan Mayer, a Princeton researcher and former chief technologist with the FCC remarked that location history data should be deleted when the users switch off the Location History. “If you’re going to allow users to turn off something called Location History, then all the places where you keep location history should be turned off.” Mayer said, “That seems like a pretty straightforward position to have.”
