Sheridan is a town in Indiana, USA. There are lots of trees near the public schools in the town. Their leaves turn sunlight into energy (能量).
In Sheridan, the sun not just provides energy for plants. It keeps schools running, too. The schools use solar panels (太阳能电池板) to turn sunlight into energy.
The science behind solar energy is not new. But Sheridan Community Schools is the first school district (学区) in Indiana to be completely solar—powered. The district finished putting in solar panels for all three of its schools in 2014. Some of the panels can turn to follow the sun across the sky.
In 2008, fewer than 1,000 schools used solar power. By 2014, there were 3,727 schools with solar panels in the USA. These numbers come from a report by the Solar Foundation. Roxie Brown, a program director there, said that the number of schools with solar panels has continued to go up since 2014.
Solar energy has some advantages over other energy sources (来源). Sunlight is a renewable source, which means it won’t run out. Solar panels don't harm the environment. Also, sunlight is free. So by using solar power, schools can save money on energy costs.
Brown thinks more schools should run on solar energy. “The sun is Earth’s energy source,” she says. “We’re trying to make it the energy source for our houses, cars and schools, too.”
But using solar energy isn’t always easy. Solar panels can be expensive to put in. The panels also take up space. But for many schools, going solar is worth it.

Baidu and Meituan are now working together to use self-driving technology to deliver food. They will be experimenting with this in the Xiong’an New Area, Beijing Evening News reported. The self-driving cars will mainly be used to send group orders. They won’t deal with the single orders that are usually sent by delivery drivers.
Sina Tech noted that using self-driving cars would be considered as a revolution (革命) in the food delivery industry, for it will eliminate (消除) the cost of labor (劳动力). Online food delivery services have developed rapidly in China. Almost 300 million users have used online services to order food, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
In the first half of 2019, Meituan Waimai ranked highest among all food delivery companies in terms of total orders, with Chinese food delivery company Eleme ranking second. Self-driving delivery services will promote (促进) the development of the industry. But that doesn’t mean that delivery drivers will lose their jobs. There are still some problems to be worked out. Qiang Ning is an air pollution control expert from Tongji University. He said a new technology has been invented to deal with the waste. When the waste reaches into this special area, its bad smell will be removed. As a result, it’ll become safe, odorless(无气味) and green.
Tanghui Waste Transfer Station in Jiaxing has accepted the technology. All the situations show the smell in all operation areas is lower than before. There was no strange smell around it. There are more than 3, 000 active satellites moving around the earth, according to a Germany company. Satellites have all kinds of roles, such as sending TV signals (信号), showing you the way on the road, helping scientists with their studies, etc.
For example, the 22 satellites China just sent up are part of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (北斗卫星导航系统). Shared bikes that use BeiDou chips (芯片) can provide more correct places, making them easier to find. Drones (无人机) can also use BeiDou while flying.
Before satellites, TV signals don’t reach very far. Mountains or tall buildings would block the signals. Phone calls to faraway places were also a problem. With satellites, TV signals and phone calls can be sent directly to a satellite and back down to different places on the earth. SpaceX is trying to go further. It plans to use satellites to provide people with Internet all over the world.
Satellites can also provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They help scientists know changes in weather. By watching wildfires and volcanoes (火山), satellites can help to deal with natural disasters (灾害). Farmers can use satellites pictures to decide the best time to water their plants.
1. What can we know from the second paragraph?A.People live better with the help of satellites. |
