【推荐1】During the two sessions (两会), people around the world talk about China. Have you ever wondered what topics Generation Z (people born 1995-2009) are most interested in? In March 2022, China Daily did a survey on topics of the two sessions to see what interests Generation Zers most. Let’s take a look.

Among all topics, “mental health” got the most votes. “Spreading traditional culture” (83%) followed closely. The top choice is not unexpected. Reports on mental health problems of teenagers have increased in recent years. The rate of depression (抑郁) among them was nearly 25%. The attention they give to mental health shows that they care for their own well-being. When they don’t feel well, they dare to speak out and ask for help.

Although Generation Zers are young, they understand the power of traditional culture. They believe that China is deeply rooted in traditional culture and would like to spread it to the world. Zhao Yan, a junior 2 student from Liaoning Riwan Middle School, said, “My school set up many clubs to help students understand the importance of traditional culture. I join a paper-cutting workshop and a hanfu club. I have learned a lot. I made a tiger-shaped paper-cutting. It has not only helped me practise my handwork skills but also let me know the beauty of art. It’s our duty to pass this great art to future generations.”

Instead of only focusing on themselves, Generation Zers also set their eyes on social problems. Kevin Xu, a 16-year-old boy from Shenzhen, told the reporter. “I care about the prevention and control measures (防治措施) of COVID-19. I’m now studying in the UK. In February, the UK government ended quarantine (隔离) rules. It means that COVID-19 patients can go out. This would never happen in China! I think China’s “dynamic zero-case” policy (动态清零政策) sounds more responsible. A country should protect its people in a pandemic.”

People seem to know little about Generation Zers. Thanks to this survey, we are able to take a closer look at “what Generation Zers care about” and paint a picture of what they are like.

【推荐2】When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish, doing some cooking and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was richer than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.

This is the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community got abilities and came to feel they were important members of society, ” said Daniel Brown, the expert who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”

Brown’s study followed these children in great detail(详情). Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Brown’s research group compared the children’s mental-health(心理健康)scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were given for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility(责任), independence, confidence and competence—the basics of emotional(情绪的)health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent(有能力的)adults are those who know how to do this.

Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

A.He came from a rich family.B.He felt sorry for the other kids.

D.Children who feel good about people around them.
3. How did Brown follow the children in his study?
A.By giving housework and praise.B.By interviewing and giving scores.
C.By setting goals and showing love.D.By solving problems and testing them.
4. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain an interesting study.B.To introduce Justin Tong’s success.

【推荐3】Parents and children often face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting pocket money, learning to save, and deciding to buy expensive things. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to deal with money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money to spend. How can families achieve these goals?

The Tidier family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids make some money. Their son, Ryan, 17, has been watering in the garden since he was 8. He owned his own tools with the help of his parents. Now he has saved $7,800. Besides, he bought a bike and a wonderful sound system. And he is going to buy a car next year.

Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady manages a company toward children and young adults. “They shouldn’t be always thinking of spending money.” Brady warns. Instead, they should understand basic rules for making money, saving money, and managing money.

That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past ten years, most Americans aged 18 to 24 borrowed nearly $3,000 on credit card(信用卡). Among high school seniors, four out of five have never taken a class about money.

Giselle Lopez, of New York City, learned the hard way. So far, she has owed(欠)$2,000 on her first credit card. Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the money off slowly by herself. “Now every time I use money, I know that it comes from my own pocket,” Giselle says. “That gives me a sense of responsibility for my actions.” Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn’t have to mean setting strict rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can learn to set those rules themselves.
