In the UK, there are over 800 boarding schools (寄宿学校). At first, the boarding schools were for white rich boys only. Now both boys and girls can go there.

So when it’s time to go to bed, house-masters(宿舍管理员) turn off all the lights in the bedrooms and take care of the students.

The school began to use the new bell this semester. It helps teachers remember it is break time. The new bell has three parts. The first part lasts 15 seconds. It is made up of lovely folk music. Next, there are 20 seconds of silence. The final 25-second bell is a fast-paced march(快节奏进行曲) that seems to tell each teacher, “You have to end class now!”
Most students and teachers welcome the new bell. This school no longer has a problem with teachers giving instructions after call is over.
Chen Yong is a student at the school. He can’t keep listening to the teacher when the bell rings, because he is thinking about his lost break time. “We tried many ways to stop teachers before, but nothing worked,” Chen told the Shanghai Evening Post. “It’s better now. When the folk music is on, teachers know that class is going to be over in one minute.”
Shen Huimin, a teacher at No. 8 Middle School, agrees that the new bell is creative. “In the past, we usually wanted to add a few words after class. But we often forgot the time,” Shen said. “The new bell reminds us twice. It’s a small change, but it’s really solving a big problem.”

These are the finding of a 40﹣year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. "Children who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society," said Daniel Brown, the psychologist(心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."
Brown's study followed these children in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47.Under Brown, the researchers compared the children's mental﹣health scores with their childhood﹣activity scores. Points were awarded for part﹣time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence ﹣ the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work."

Recently, anxiety about eye health of students is very real. Many students have started wearing glasses. However, Wantang Primary School in Yunnan province might be a special case. It has achieved something remarkable (非凡的) — none of its 536 students have myopia (近视). Eye health experts say some of its methods are worth learning.
First of all, every student is required to go outside during class breaks. They play outdoors for over three hours a day, according to Yang Qingyi, a teacher at the school. “Even for shy kids, we encourage them to take a walk outside,” he said.
Other methods have also helped. For example, students don’t take smartphones or other electronic devices (设备) to school. They get at least 10.5 hours of sleep every day. The school tries to provide a balanced diet. And there are green trees all around the school, according to the school’s head teacher.
Nationwide, the attention on eye health has been growing. The double-reduction policy came out in July 2021. It says that primary schools should not give homework to first-and second-graders so that they won’t use their eyes too much. There is also a guideline brought out by the National Health Commission (NHC), saying that schools should examine students’ eyesight (视力) at least twice every year.

In Japan, most schools demand (强烈要求) that students wear uniforms, such as sports suits or skirts. But many Japanese schools even regulate (规定) the color of underwear! This makes sure students won’t fall over on the wet floors and keeps the schools clean. Chewing gum (嚼口香糖) is not allowed in many US school buildings, as it is difficult to clean up. And if students chew gum in class,_________.
In Britain, strange hairstyles are not allowed in some schools. But they might allow students to wear certain hairstyles during the World Cup years.
