Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either. However, life today has brought new problems.
One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution makes our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and makes our drinking water dirty. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It’s bad for all the living things in the world. Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt(被子) over the city. This kind of quilt is called smog(烟).
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is poured away. They mustn’t blow( 吹) dirty smoke into the air. We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw them on the ground. We should go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car.
Let’s try our best to protect the environment

Dear students,
I’m Li Hua. Today I will talk about the danger of fires and how to prevent them from happening.
I am Daisy Jones. At about 8:30 this morning, I was walking on Ocean Road when a boy on a bike passed me quickly. The road was empty at that time so the boy kept riding in the middle.
Suddenly a car appeared. It passed me, then followed the boy for a while. It tried to pass the boy several times but failed. The driver began to sound the horn(鸣笛). However, it seemed that the boy didn’t hear it. He was probably listening to music with earplugs(耳塞)! That was terrible.
Suddenly the car speeded up and passed the boy. Unluckily it hit the boy. The boy fell off his bike onto the road. But the car did not stop. It continued on its way. I believe the driver knew he had hit the boy because I saw him look back from the window.
The car was quite old. It was a red Ford Escort. But its number plate(车牌)was so dirty that I couldn’t see its number. The driver was a man with long hair. He wasn’t old but I can’t guess his age.
I ran to the boy and saw he was badly hurt. So I called the police at once. They soon arrived. The boy was sent to the hospital at once. I told a police officer what I had seen. She asked me to make a statement at the police station.

A 10-year-old girl was on the way home after school. Suddenly, a bottle thrown from a building by an 8-year-old boy fell on her head. Sounds like a bad dream, doesn’t it? Sadly, this actually happened in Nanjing in June, 2019. The girl was sent to the hospital immediately.
Similar things have taken place in other parts of China. These heartbreaking cases raised public worries about the risk of falling objects. Even a small object can cause serious injuries (受伤) when dropped from a great height. For example, an empty cola bottle dropped from the 25th floor can kill a person.
People are expecting to see more laws to deal with such cases. According to the laws, people who throw things that harm people should pay for the victims’ (受害者的) medical care. But in many cases, it’s hard to find out who is responsible (负责的). This makes the situation more difficult because all of those who live in the building could be responsible.
What can we do about it?
Many people have turned to video cameras to solve the problem. Some neighborhoods in Nanjing have used cameras to spot things falling from high buildings. The cameras can see the outside of the building, but not into the apartments themselves.
There have been other suggestions as well, including stricter checks on the design and construction (施工) of high buildings. The checks could remind people of the risk of falling things.
1. How old was the boy who threw a bottle from a high building?2. When did that happen?
3. What will happen if an empty cola bottle drops from the 25th floor?
4. Who should pay for the victims’ medical care?
5. Why are there stricter checks on the design and construction of high buildings?

Now, many young people enjoy traveling around the world on their own. It’s not because they have no one to travel with, but because they think traveling alone is exciting and challenging. With no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if you lose your wallet, it is a big challenge. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character-building and a chance to prove that you can make it on your own. It’s exciting and special to travel alone. But it’s also dangerous to travel alone sometimes. So here is some advice for traveling alone.
Don’t choose a hotel if you’re not sure whether it’s safe. If you do, ask for a room near the elevator(电梯), so you won’t need to walk down long in the hallway(走廊). Besides, make sure the clerk writes down your room number.
Don’t arrive at night. Sometimes, areas around bus or train stations can be scary(使人惊慌的) at night, and some small towns may shut down early.
Keep your documents safe. Put your passport, extra money and other important documents in safe places, and use a bag or wallet to carry daily spending money.
Know some common sense. It is very important for staying safe and having an enjoyable time while you are traveling alone. For example, don’t walk around late at night, don’t drink with strangers and don’t take a free car for saving money.
1. Why do many young people prefer to travel alone?2. How many suggestions for travelling alone are mentioned in the text?
3. Who can you ask to write down your room number?
4. Where can be scary at night?
5. How should you deal with the daily spending money when you travel alone?

Labor (劳动) education has been made a part of compulsory (义务的) education. Students will have at least one course every week on basic household (家庭的) skills such as cleaning and cooking. Should cooking be taught at schools? The topic causes heated public discussions.
Li Mei, a student in Beijing:
We have little time to develop our interests because we have to spend most of the time studying. A household skill class can give us chances to experience life and help us discover different interests. I hope we could be given the choices to take whatever courses we like.
Mrs. Chen, a housewife in Hubei:
Schools should have cooking classes. Children will be taught about their food and how to cook properly. Many parents don’t have the professional knowledge. A household class would provide the knowledge and training that parents are unable to give their children.
Mr. Wang, a teacher in Shandong:
By learning basic skills like cooking and cleaning, children can learn how to take care of themselves. Parents won’t always help their children with every problem they’ll meet in their life. It is necessary for children to know how to master these important skills as early as possible.
Wu Lei, an engineer in Shanghai:
I learned some basic cooking skills from my mother. But most of them were learned after I graduated from university, from books and online short videos. I hope these cooking classes will really make students realize that labor is important and valuable.

Many children use the Internet to get knowledge and useful information, and relax in their free time. But some of them are not using it in a good way. Here are some rules to make sure you are safe and have fun on the Internet.
Firstly, you make rules for Internet use with your parents. For example, when you can go online, for how long and what activities you can go online.
Secondly, don’t give your password (密码) to anyone else, and never leak out (泄露) personal information such as your real name, home address, age, school, phone number and so on.
Third, never send a photo of yourself to someone in e-mail unless your parents say it’s OK. Check with your parents before going into a chat room. Different chat rooms have different rules and attract different kinds of people. You and your parents must make sure it’s a right place for you.
And you should never agree to meet someone you met on the Internet without your parents’ permission. Never meet anyone you met online alone. Then tell your parents or teachers about it.
Next, you should treat other people online as you’d like to be treated. Never use bad words.
Finally, please remember—not everything you read on the Internet is true.
